Introduction: Growing Out
This is a book very difficult to define by conventional categories.
Call it a planning monograph, yet it begins with climate change ten thousand years ago, placing the Erlitou "well-city" and the Xiong'an New Area's "water-and-city" into the same narrative framework. Call it a philosophical work, yet it is filled with hardcore archaeological evidence such as the pharyngeal teeth of the Longzhou carp, the oracle bones of the Malay turtle, and mineral source analysis of Sanxingdui bronzes. Call it a history book, yet it proposes a set of spatial construction methods oriented toward the future. Its unclassifiability is precisely where its value lies.
Professor Jiang Hongqing, the author, uses over thirty years of planning practice as his foundation. From the ink-wash rendering of the 1990 Angkor Museum proposal to national mega-projects such as Xiong'an New Area, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and Jiangdong New Area, he employs "cyclical self-consistency" as his methodology and the "nine-grid" as his underlying code, constructing a thought system that connects heaven, earth, and humanity, spanning ancient and modern, East and West. At the center of this system stands a core proposition: space is not a cold physical container, but the extension, record, and succession of living entities along the dimension of time.
The book opens with: "Learn from heaven and earth, shape square and circle, guard the nine-grid; eternal continuity is eternity." Learn from heaven and earth—read the rhythms of climate and geography; shape square and circle—guide spatial construction according to circumstances; guard the nine-grid—hold fast to the civilization highland formed by the four great river basins and four great terraces. It concludes with "Revere heaven, love humanity, place hope in future generations"—from awe before natural law, to responsibility for human order, to commitment to the continuation of time, forming a complete closed loop from beginning to end. This closure is not a rhetorical echo but a complete logical closure of the book's argumentative path. It is not a utopia deduced from the study, but a thought system that "grew out" of the Chinese land.
01 One Drawing
The first page of the book's plates is the Angkor Museum competition proposal drawn by the author in 1990—a design drawing rendered in traditional ink-wash technique.
What is special about this drawing is that it is not an "early work" but an embryo of spatial philosophy. The sun corresponds to "heaven," Angkor to "earth," and between them is "human"—the multiple subjects of space; the law running through it all is the operating logic of "cyclical self-consistency." What the author sketched with brush and ink is precisely the spatial vision later expressed in the sixteen characters: "Encompassing heaven and earth, cyclical self-consistency, heaven and earth in warp and weft, square and circle in tacit accord."
The deep structure of this ink-wash painting was distilled by the author over thirty years later into three characters: guard the nine-grid. The nine-grid is the book's most fundamental cognitive code. It is not a map but a spatial grammar. It originates from the structure of the Chinese land itself: four east-west river basin lines and four north-south terrace lines superimposed orthogonally, forming a four-vertical, four-horizontal grid. This grid was not artificially invented but discovered. It lies hidden in the migration traces left by the earth to humanity—a deep structure carved into the eastern part of the Asian continent by the alternation of warm and cold climates and the ebb and flow of sea and land. From the "well"-shaped avenues of Erlitou to the "artisan builds the state" of the Rites of Zhou · Records of Examination of Crafts, from the square city of Tang Chang'an to the central axis of Ming-Qing Beijing, this grammar has been operating for three thousand years. The ink-wash rendering of the Angkor Museum proposal was the author's first unconscious touch of this grammar; every planning practice over the following thirty-plus years has been a repeated calibration and verification of the same grammar under different climates and geographical conditions. "Learn from heaven and earth, shape square and circle, guard the nine-grid"—guarding the nine-grid is holding fast to this grammar itself. This drawing thus became the initial embryo of the book's methodology: it is not a deduction from concepts but a capture from perception; not an illustration of existing theory but an intuitive grasp of spatial order.
Among the nine characters "learn from heaven and earth, shape square and circle, guard the nine-grid," learning from heaven and earth corresponds to the sun, shaping square and circle corresponds to the proposal, and guarding the nine-grid corresponds to the implementation of law. In this sense, the book does not begin with words but with a drawing.
Over the following thirty-plus years, the author led his team in presiding over or participating in numerous national mega-project plans, including Xiong'an New Area, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Haikou Jiangdong New Area, Beijing Chang'an Avenue renovation, and the surrounding area of the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre. These rich practices are not simple applications of theory but repeated calibration, verification, and iteration of that "original drawing" under different climates and geographical conditions. In the Xiong'an New Area plan, the northern drought and severe cold, the wetland ecology of Baiyangdian, and the national positioning as a "millennium project" generated the specific form of "water-and-city" from that "original drawing"; in the Haikou Jiangdong New Area plan, typhoon corridors, seismic fault zones, and tropical monsoon climate generated the spatial strategy of "finger-shaped island chains" from the same underlying logic. Each practice is a re-entry and re-answer, and these answers together converge into the book's thought system.
This "practice first, theory later" growth path determines the book's fundamental character: it was not deduced within an existing theoretical framework, but grew out of repeated planning practices. It answers the same question: why can this land of China carry five thousand years of uninterrupted civilization, and on this basis face the future.
02 The Grand View of Space
This is the book's most core discussion and the key to understanding "why space has meaning."
There is a passage in the book that is the concentrated expression of its core proposition: "The earth is a 'universally isomorphic' life community; the human and the universe are closely interconnected. Over the ten thousand years since the interglacial period, the traditional Chinese medicine and feng shui theories developed in China are essentially perception systems of life and space. The human body can perceive changes in heaven and earth (climate and geography), mountains and seas (mountain-square and sea-circle), and humanity (space and time)... Humanity enlightens itself by cognizing the universe, and verifies the universe by observing itself. In this sense, the human is a small universe, and the universe is a large human. Traditional Chinese medicine and feng shui are the learning that connects the human and the universe in 'heaven-human unity' through life and space."
This passage is like a key that can open all chapters of the book. It tells us: space has meaning because there is life perceiving it, dwelling in it, transforming it, and inheriting it. What traditional Chinese medicine and feng shui represent is precisely the concentrated expression of this perception system at the level of ancient wisdom. The author points out that mountain ranges and water veins are like human bones and blood, wind veins and rain veins are like the two meridians, and wind nests and rain nests are like acupuncture points. Traditional Chinese medicine regulates the "spatial channels" within the human body—the meridians; feng shui regulates the "spatial channels" on the earth—mountain ranges and water veins. Both essentially deal with the energy exchange between living entities and the spatial environment. The human body's water content is 60% to 70% of body weight, roughly the same as the earth's land-sea ratio; the human body's thermal comfort range is 20 to 26 degrees Celsius, highly consistent with the earth's climate comfort zone. This thought of "universal isomorphism" makes space an organic existence that can be perceived by life and inscribed by history.
If this perception system is to continue and act on the future, it cannot remain at the level of intuition and experience. The book has a key transformative statement on this: transforming the "heaven, earth, human" framework generated by Chinese intuitive thinking of imitating heaven and modeling earth into the "heaven, earth, human" framework formed by natural science and matrix thinking. The essence of this transformation is to elevate perceptual experience into calculable elements, transform intuitive judgment into verifiable laws, and incorporate ancient spatial wisdom into the empirical system of modern science.
The climate resilience, geographical resilience, order resilience, and spatial resilience precipitated by Chinese civilization have obtained clear structured expression. On this basis, the author further proposes the I-BST Life-Space Intelligence System, comprehensively integrating BT life science, ST spatial technology, and IT artificial intelligence. The essence of this system is to advance the ancient perception system represented by traditional Chinese medicine and feng shui from passive adaptation to intelligent collaboration. It does not use technology to replace perception but to extend perception, allowing the perceptual experience of billions of living beings on a ten-thousand-year scale to gain new expressions in the digital age. Space thus acquires the ability to perceive, learn, and self-optimize, transforming from "an inhabited place" into "a partner co-evolving with life."
Thus the book's "Grand View of Space" is formed: three views, three constructs, three immortalities.
The three views—grand historical view, grand geographical view, and grand order view—interweave and merge. The grand historical view records how each climate turning point drove population migration and dynastic succession—descending the mountains in cold periods, ascending in warm periods—each time a large-scale displacement of life. The grand geographical view moves between terraces and river basins—retreating to higher ground during sea transgressions, advancing to lower ground during sea regressions—the boundaries of the nine-grid are never fixed. The grand order view moves within population scale and technological capacity—from tens of millions to hundreds of millions to billions—each leap forcing society to reorganize itself. Bringing history, geography, and order simultaneously into the same cognitive coordinate system of the "nine-grid" makes space a fundamental dimension for understanding civilizational continuity.
The three constructs—on this cognition, threefold construction transforms vision into action. The nine-grid pattern transforms new spatial order into structural skeleton; the method of opening things implements the skeleton into buildable forms; universal competition and cooperation lets forms carry new social order. Old square cities are cut by new avenues; new matrices cover old textures; each round of construction is a spatial reset.
The three immortalities—Chapter Six contains a passage that is the apex of values. "Planners can also have the 'three immortalities': establishing virtue—good at planning without contention, universe and human as root, encompassing heaven and earth; establishing merit—good at building without uprooting, heaven and earth in warp and weft, square and circle in tacit accord; establishing words—good at speaking without disputation, two views and three ways, cyclical self-consistency." This positioning elevates the planner's work from "drawing" to the level of "establishing virtue, merit, and words." If the preceding discussions all speak of "what space is," "what law is," and "what method is," this passage speaks of "what the person doing this should become."
This positioning is very high, but it is precisely the author's self-awareness. He is not writing a "professional manual" but a "spatial philosophy," so he must give at the end a "philosopher's self-expectation": planners are not only technicians but modern heirs of the "shi" (scholar-gentleman). After Confucius transformed shamans into Confucians, the "shi" assumed the social integration function of "taking moral self-reflection rather than divine revelation as the source of legitimacy." He is neither a servant of God nor a tool of the king, but a practitioner of "cultivating oneself, regulating the family, governing the state, and pacifying the world." The planner's contemporary function of "spatial formatting" is structurally highly isomorphic with the "shi": both seek, under specific spatiotemporal conditions, an order in which the greatest number can dwell in peace. The ancients used the well-field system to "format" land and square cities and courtyards to "format" settlements; modern planners use territorial spatial planning to "format" river basins and terraces and urban design to "format" streets and communities. The tools have changed, but the problem has not—how, on limited land, to let the greatest number live with order, dignity, and future.
Planners are not just "people who make plans" but "people who participate in the continuation of civilization."
03 Cyclical Return and Self-Consistency
The main thread running through all six chapters is the author's distilled core concept: "cyclical return and self-consistency."
The time and space left to humanity by the earth are finite. Time and space are the precious resources of human survival and the ultimate cost of human development; to compete and cooperate with the future is to compete and cooperate with time, and equally with space. It is precisely because time and space are finite that civilization must seek self-consistency within cyclical return.
Cyclical return is the continuation of time in space, the law of periodic change. The alternation of warm and cold climates, the ebb and flow of sea and land, the rise and fall of civilizations—all are cyclical returns. Self-consistency is space's record of time, stability and adaptation under specific conditions. The civilizational form of a certain stage, the spatial pattern of a certain region—all are self-consistency. Resilience is the intermediate link connecting the two, allowing living entities not to collapse during cyclical return nor ossify during self-consistency. Cyclical return is absolute, self-consistency is momentary, resilience is relative. This thought differs from the commonly understood "spiral ascent" or "cyclical repetition"; it emphasizes a dynamic balance based on resilience: each cyclical return is a reset, each self-consistency is a re-standing. This is precisely the book's most core methodology.
On this basis, the author proposes "matrix thinking"—a cognitive method that structures holistic elements and forms from linear to matrix. Linear thinking is a line, from cause to effect. Matrix thinking is a net: vertical columns are logical connections, horizontal rows are dialectical parallelisms, interwoven—any element simultaneously relates to all other elements. The nine-grid is the spatial diagram of matrix thinking; the nine cells are not nine isolated points but a complete structure connected by vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines. The operability of matrix thinking lies in requiring that when cognizing spatial problems, three vertical columns and three horizontal rows must be considered simultaneously. The three vertical columns are survival and development, social development, and urban-rural development. The three horizontal rows are consciousness origin, material origin, and cognitive origin. Their intersection forms the nine-grid—the nine basic dimensions of spatial problems. Any spatial phenomenon can be placed into these nine dimensions for analysis; any spatial proposal can be tested from these nine dimensions.
The author summarizes the essence of spatial philosophy in sixteen characters: encompassing heaven and earth, cyclical self-consistency, heaven and earth in warp and weft, square and circle in tacit accord. "Encompassing heaven and earth" deals with the breadth of spatial philosophy, studying the sum of heaven-earth-human spatial relations. "Cyclical self-consistency" deals with the dynamic mechanism of spatial philosophy—cyclical return is the mode of time's movement in space, self-consistency is space's momentary stability in movement. Spatial philosophy does not pursue a once-and-for-all correct proposal but understands that each self-consistency is only a pause in the cyclical process. "Heaven and earth in warp and weft" deals with the structural method of spatial philosophy—warp and weft is matrix thinking, the vertical being logical causal chains, the horizontal being dialectical structural relations. "Square and circle in tacit accord" deals with the formal law of spatial philosophy—square and circle are the earth's two great spatial revelations, but spatial philosophy does not oppose them but seeks tacit accord between them.
To realize this system, the author proposes three "combinations" as methodological paths. He combines natural science with social science, giving the book both the empirical hardness of science and the speculative depth of philosophy. The distribution changes of the Longzhou carp are a natural science proposition, while how these changes affected human migration and cultural choice is a social science proposition. The author does not cut disciplines apart but lets them dialogue in the same "nine-grid." He combines modern achievements with ancient wisdom, using digital twins and artificial intelligence to re-understand the nine-grid, and using feng shui theory and construction methods to test modern planning gains and losses. He proposes "digital construction methods," arguing that the digitalization of spatial forms is not yet sound—precisely where ancient wisdom can feed back into modern practice. He combines micro-spatial activities with macro-value construction, so that the orientation of a courtyard house and the width of a street ultimately point to a fundamental value question: what kind of order deserves to be solidified by space, and what kind of people deserve to dwell in space.
The book's six chapters themselves form a "from concrete to abstract, bottom-up" matrix structure. Chapter One, "Adapting to Climate," and Chapter Two, "Adapting to Local Conditions," discuss the natural constraints on human activity—the "material origin" of spatial philosophy. Chapter Three, "Condensing Mind," discusses how humanity seeks advantage and avoids harm, responding to natural challenges with cognition and order—the "cognitive origin" of spatial philosophy. Chapter Four, "Advancing with the Times," proposes the "matrix+" spatial construction method; Chapter Five verifies its practical power through numerous firsthand planning cases; Chapter Six elevates spatial construction to the height of civilizational continuity and philosophical speculation. Each chapter is a dimension in the matrix, mutually supporting and interpenetrating, not linear succession. Its ultimate orientation is "eternal continuity is eternity"—what Chinese civilization pursues is not "temporary eternity" like the pyramids or Gothic cathedrals seeking immortality through stone structures, but "generational continuity," continuously self-consistent and reborn on a ten-thousand-year scale.
04 Codes and Philosophy
The book's most original theoretical breakthrough lies in proposing the nine-grid code and the spatial philosophy system simultaneously—not code plus philosophy, but code as philosophy.
A code differs from a simple sign. A sign points only to a specific thing, while a code points to a meaning system. The nine-grid as code is not only "what is drawn" but also the rule system of "how to draw" and "how to read." From the perspective of semiotics, Cassirer pointed out in An Essay on Man that man is a symbolic animal; language, myth, art, and religion are different symbolic forms created by humanity, together constituting a meaning network for understanding the world. Saussure viewed language as a differential system composed of signifier and signified, emphasizing that the meaning of a code does not come from the code itself but from the structural relations between codes. Peirce distinguished icon, index, and symbol, revealing different levels of connection between codes and objects. These studies jointly point to a fundamental judgment: humanity does not directly face the world but constructs the world through codes. Codes are not "reflections" of reality but "replacements" for reality. Without codes, there is no understandable world.
The nine-grid conforms to all core features of semiotics. It is a differential system—the positional differences among the nine cells determine their respective functions and meanings, conforming to Saussure's basic definition of code structure. It is a ternary relation system—the form, position, and symbolic meaning of the cells together constitute a complete signifying process, conforming to Peirce's analysis of how codes operate. It is moreover a "symbolic form," as Cassirer said, an a priori framework by which humanity organizes chaotic spatial perception into ordered spatial cognition. The nine-grid is not only a spatial symbol but the "grammar" of spatial symbols, prescribing how space is divided, connected, and given meaning. In this sense, the nine-grid transcends the function of ordinary codes to become a meta-code system—a rule system that generates and organizes other codes.
Xuanhui proposes code and philosophy simultaneously; the implication of its thesis is: philosophy is not the interpretation of codes but the operation of codes themselves. The sixty-four hexagram statements are not descriptions of the world but a code system by which the world can be understood, operated, and transformed. "Words, images, changes, divination"—that is, encoding, presentation, evolution, prediction—this is the entirety of philosophy's work. Words are the naming of codes, giving things names so chaotic experience gains recognizable labels. Images are the presentation of codes, displaying meaning through hexagram images and pictures. Changes are the evolution of codes, flowing, transforming, and reorganizing in time. Divination is the prediction of codes, deducing the future through code operations. The four constitute a complete code cycle. The I Ching is regarded as constant as the sun and moon because it provides a code-operating procedure for handling uncertainty. When climate is uncertain, use words-images-changes-divination to read celestial signs; when geography is uncertain, use them to assess directions; when the human heart is uncertain, use them to weigh choices.
From the perspective of semiotics, the philosophical significance of the nine-grid lies in its simultaneously carrying two cognitive functions: classification and relation. Classification divides the chaotic world into recognizable categories. Relation establishes understandable connections between categories. The nine-grid is not only a spatial classification system but a spatial relation system. The meaning of any space does not exist in isolation in a single cell but emerges from the relations between cells. This is precisely the core feature of philosophical thinking—not starting from a single element but grasping meaning from the whole structure. The nine-grid materializes this philosophical thinking into an operable spatial tool, making structural understanding of the world no longer only the speculation of philosophers but a rule that every city-builder can follow. Code as philosophy means this rule set is itself the material embodiment of philosophical thought.
05 Geography and the Globe
The book's afterword, "China Does Not Need to 'Rule' the World," is a direct response to Martin Jacques's When China Rules the World. The author argues that the anxiety of "rule" stems from the inertial thinking of "radial conquest" under Western geopolitical structures. The West's small geopolitical structure lacks the conditions for "self-consistency"; the survival of civilization often requires outward expansion to obtain resources. China's large geopolitical structure, however, is "self-consistent"—the "nine-grid" formed by four great river basins and four great terraces is sufficient to complete climate adaptation and resource allocation internally, achieving civilizational continuity without outward expansion.
The underlying aspiration of Chinese civilization has never been to "rule" anyone but to "hold the center and sustain oneself." He writes: "If China guards this 'nine-grid' well, it guards the civilizational highland of humanity, and naturally, there is no need to 'rule' the world."
The reason the nine-grid can become such a civilizational highland is that behind it lies a spatial foundation jointly constituted by "mountain, sea, and ring."
Mountain is depth. The Loess Plateau and the eight-hundred-li Qin Plain stand at the intersection of the four great river basins and four great terraces—here is the stratum where the Chinese civilizational sequence has never been interrupted. From the fire of Xihoudu to the central axis of Nanzuo, from the red writing of Taosi to the inscription of He Zun, every "self-consistency" of civilization has left its mark on this land. During sea transgressions, populations retreat to higher ground; during warm periods, they radiate outward from the heights. Mountain gives civilization a starting point to which it can repeatedly return.
Sea is boundary. Four ancient coastlines record four cycles of civilization being formatted by seawater and reborn. The Mu Continent line, the Lingjiatan line, the Liangzhu-Sumer line, the Asia line. Each ancient coastline is a history book soaked in seawater. The coastal zone below 200 meters in elevation and within 200 kilometers of the coastline is both the region with the most abundant food sources and freshwater resources and the area first submerged when sea levels rise. The advance and retreat of glacier lines synchronize with coastlines, one low and one high, together framing the complete range of human survivability. Sea gives civilization a clear measure between advance and retreat.
Ring is connection. Surrounding the four directions of the nine-grid, each extends a great corridor of civilizational transmission. To the west is the great corridor around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau—three arteries, the Qiang North Road, Qiang Central Road, and Qiang South Road, connecting Central Asia, West Asia, and South Asia. To the east is the great corridor along the Pacific coastline—from the Bohai Sea to the South China Sea, connecting China with Japan, the Korean Peninsula, and Southeast Asian islands into an arc. To the north is the corridor around the Mongolian Plateau—nomadic forces move south during cold-warm alternations, merging with agrarian civilization through collision. To the south is the corridor around the South China Sea—rice agriculture spreads island by island, and maritime trade weaves a monsoon network. The ring lines of the four directions rotate on the nine-grid—ascending mountains in warm periods, descending in cold periods—populations converge on the nine-grid from different directions and are re-coded by the nine-grid before radiating outward in different directions. Each rotation is a civilizational reconfiguration; each transmission is a spatial reset. Without the nine-grid as the hub, the four ring lines would be merely isolated arc corridors; with the nine-grid as the core of sedimentation and transformation, the four ring lines can become a whole, enabling the four directions' civilizations to complete the full closed loop of "introduction, sedimentation, fusion, and re-output" in the nine-grid. Mineral materials and pantheons brought by the western ring sediment at Sanxingdui; rice and porcelain carried by the eastern ring are exported along the maritime Silk Road; nomadic forces pouring in from the northern ring merge into the agrarian society of the Loess Plateau; exotic treasures returned by the southern ring flow into the port city civilization of Lingnan. The four ring lines rotate ceaselessly on the nine-grid; each cyclical return leaves new civilizational strata in the nine-grid. Ring gives civilization a channel for continuous dialogue with the outside.
Mountain gives depth, sea gives boundary, ring gives connection. Together they constitute the spatial foundation for Chinese civilization's continuous survival on a ten-thousand-year scale: accumulating toward mountains, settling toward seas, strategizing across all directions. The nine-grid is not an invented map but a discovered one—it lies hidden in the structure of this land jointly framed by mountain, sea, and ring. "Guarding the nine-grid" has three meanings. Guarding the channels of life—the four river basin lines and four terrace lines constitute the most complete ecological corridors on earth, the life channels followed by generations of Longzhou carp, Malay turtles, migratory birds, and even ancient dinosaurs. Guarding the resilience of civilization—facing the violent disturbances of warm-cold alternation and sea-land changes over ten thousand years, the nine-grid provides Chinese civilization with a unique strategic depth. Guarding the balance between "human" and "universe"—the nine-grid accommodates the production logic of the "well-field," the living order of the "well-city," and the philosophical ideal of "heaven-human unity." The nine-grid is not a closed fortress but an open system. It has no boundary, only grid; no center, only a center of gravity; no interruption, only connection. This is precisely the spatial logic of "no need to rule": a civilization that does not need outward expansion to confirm itself—its very mode of existence dissolves the concept of "rule."
The author further points out that moving from geographical civilization to global civilization requires constructing a spatial philosophy. Geographical civilization is a civilizational form rooted in a specific geographical environment; each civilization has formed unique spatial cognition and construction wisdom within its own geographical framework. Global civilization is not about erasing these differences but about establishing a cognitive framework of mutual understanding and mutual transformation above them. Spatial philosophy is precisely such a framework—it provides a common code system so that the spatial wisdom of different geographical civilizations can be translated, compared, and borrowed. It does not require all civilizations to become the same but makes each civilization's spatial experience shareable knowledge for all humanity. This is both Chinese civilization's contribution to global civilization and the way a "self-consistent" civilization participates in "co-consistency."
06 The Whistleblower
When reading the book's discussion of sea level rise, I realized this book is not only a philosophical construction but also an early warning issued in advance.
The book provides a quantifiable risk formula: for every 1 meter of sea level rise, the coast advances about 100 kilometers inland, and freshwater supply faces threats. If it rises 2 meters, freshwater resources within China's 200-kilometer coastal depth will suffer systemic impact. Over 42% of China's population and more than 50% of its large and medium-sized cities are concentrated precisely in this 200-kilometer narrow coastal strip. This strip is the "land dividend" released by cold-period sea regression over the past 1,000 years and also China's most economically active and densely populated supporting area. But the book clearly states: this is a "dividend belt" and also a "risk belt."
On this judgment, the author gives a clear response plan: the second terrace is forever the strategic rear of the third terrace. The book proposes specific elevation-based life corridor plans—multi-level life corridors at 10-12 meters, 20-24 meters, 30-36 meters above sea level, connecting the Liangzhu-Sumer line at 66 meters and above to second-terrace towns. This is not abstract advice but an executable planning strategy: coastal roads and seawall facilities should be above 5-6 meters elevation; high-grade highways and high-speed railways should be raised to above 10-12 meters and interconnected into a network. These corridors do not guarantee against submersion but guarantee sufficient time for life and property to transfer within safety lines. The essence of this plan is to extend the nine-grid's grid logic from plane to vertical dimension, giving space layered defense capability in the face of sea transgression.
This is not alarmism but a reasonable inference based on 8,000 years of climate-spatial data. The author does not sensationalize panic but lays out the laws, calculates the consequences clearly, writes the plan plainly, and lets readers judge for themselves. His role is not prophet but whistleblower: issuing early warnings based on facts and logic while the situation can still be foreseen, rather than saying "I knew it all along" after disaster strikes.
As a planning monograph, it has the courage to put the judgment "the 200-kilometer coastal belt is both dividend and risk" in black and white. As a spatial philosophy work, it has the responsibility to reveal the law "the warm period is reclaiming the land released by the cold period" on a ten-thousand-year scale. This book not only tells readers "what space is" but also clearly warns them "what is happening to space" and what must be done in the future. This is the true meaning of "whistleblower." The vision of this book extends beyond China. Growing out of this land, it points toward a common framework for global civilization, proposing the building of global climate resilience, global geographic resilience, global order resilience, and global spatial resilience: climate resilience responds to cold and warmth, geographic resilience to transgression and regression, order resilience to rise and fall, and spatial resilience endows the spatial grid itself with a thinking attribute. These four layers advance step by step, ultimately pointing toward a kind of "spatial ideal"—not making all civilizations the same, but building a common framework on top of differences, one that allows mutual understanding and mutual learning, so as to realize universal benevolence and a shared destiny. What the whistleblower sounds is not only "danger is coming," but also "there is a way out over there." It is not only a ruler for measuring heaven and earth but also a whistle sounded in advance.
Conclusion: Living On
Returning to the judgment in the introduction: this book is difficult to classify, and that is precisely where its value lies.
But if one must draw a structural diagram for it, it would roughly be: two views, three ways; four principles, five uses; six unions, nine grids. This is another way of summarizing the “Three Views, Three Constructs, and Three Immortalities” from Section 02: the former leans toward the structural framework of the whole book, while the latter leans toward a progressive hierarchy of values. The two views are universe and human. The three ways are consciousness, matter, and cognition. The four principles are encompassing heaven and earth, cyclical self-consistency, heaven and earth in warp and weft, square and circle in tacit accord. The five uses are constancy, form, use, order, and harmony. The six unions and nine grids are the element matrix and formal grid. The five uses are not parallel but a chain: heaven and earth have constancy; constancy must have form; form must have use; use must have order; order must have harmony.
After reading the entire book, the author never claims "this framework can explain all civilizations." His discussion always takes Chinese civilization as the thread, the Eurasian continent as the object, and the 10,000-year interglacial as the time window. He discusses "why China can," not "why others cannot." This sense of boundary is important. It is not "civilizational superiority theory" but "geographical difference theory." Different geographical conditions produce different civilizational forms, and different civilizational forms each have their applicable conditions.
This book demonstrates a way of thinking: how to draw strength for the future from the deep structure of the land beneath one's feet. It makes planners realize they are not only engineering technicians but modern "scholar-gentlemen" who can bear the aspiration of "establishing virtue, merit, and words."
Learn from heaven and earth, hence know awe; shape square and circle, hence understand measure; guard the nine-grid, hence have foundation.
When we juxtapose the "nine-grid" with the "concentric circle," when we contrast "cyclical return" with "expansion," when we compare "clan" with "religion," what this framework gives us is not only a new tool for understanding China but a new coordinate for understanding civilizational differences. What coordinates change is not the world but the way of seeing the world.
It is a book that "grew out" and is destined to be a book that "lives on." "Living on" does not mean how long it is preserved on a shelf but that the laws it reveals—cyclical return, self-consistency, resilience, the nine-grid—as long as humanity still constructs space on this planet, these laws still operate, and the truths this book tells remain valid. The "nine-grid" it guards is not only the great-power imprint of Chinese territory but a "self-consistency" agreement reached between life and space on a ten-thousand-year scale.
