引言
Introduction
“The coastal zone below 200 meters in altitude and within 200 kilometers of the coastline is the region richest and most abundant in food sources and freshwater resources.” This statement articulates the fundamental logic of humanity living toward the sea. Nearly half the world's population is concentrated in the narrow 200-kilometer strip along coastlines. This is not an accidental choice but a survival trajectory repeatedly shaped by climatic cold and warmth and by the advance and retreat of land and sea.
The coastline is the spatial carrier of living toward the sea. It is at once the direction humanity moves toward and the boundary where civilization settles. The coastline's significance far exceeds geography; it is the boundary at which humanity first perceived the rhythms of nature. The ebb and flow of tides, the coming and going of monsoons, the migration of fish—all were read, encoded, and transmitted along this line. Each marine transgression is a formatting of civilization; each marine regression is a restart of civilization. The coastline is not merely a geographic boundary but a cultural annual ring left by civilization at different historical stages. Every ancient coastline is a history book soaked in seawater.
The glacier line is likewise a cultural annual ring. Its advance and retreat not only alter landforms but also delineate the upper altitudinal limit of human habitation. The coastline and the glacier line—one marks the breadth of civilization below, the other defines its depth above. Together they constitute the complete annual ring of humanity's living space.
The book explicitly gives a regularity: “Four coastlines, with a height difference of less than 200 meters, are enough to drive large-scale migrations of over 2,000 meters across the Four Steps.” The rise and fall of the coastline directly determines the area of habitable land; the advance and retreat of the glacier line determines freshwater supply and the depth of survival. These two lines are not isolated. When glaciers melt, the coastline rises; when glaciers expand, the coastline falls. Humanity migrates, settles, and creates in the crevice between these two lines; each advance and retreat reshapes the map of civilization.
Infinite splendor lies on the shoals. The coastline is the earliest and most advanced place of civilization, and also the most uncertain, drifting with climatic change. It is at once the dividend zone and the risk zone of civilization. It nurtured the most splendid civilizations and swallowed the most ancient ones.
01 Four Civilizations: Four Coastlines
The book explicitly delineates four coastlines. Each corresponds to a civilizational stage, crystallizing into cultural annual rings repeatedly inscribed by seawater.
The Mu Continent Line, approximately 130 meters below modern sea level. This is the coastline of the Quaternary glacial period and the average depth of the Earth's continental shelf. Approximately 11,500 years ago, four lost continents and civilizations—Mu, Atlantis, Gendaya, and Lemuria—sedimented along this line. The book notes that Atlantis first appeared in the form of the “concentric circles” spatial diagram described by Plato, the earliest spatial ideal of Western civilization. These civilizations swallowed by seawater now sleep beneath 130 meters of deep sea, becoming the earliest memory of human civilization. This coastline thus becomes the earliest cultural annual ring, recording the primordial entanglement of Earth's climate and human civilization. The Mu Continent Line is the most ancient of the entire coastline sequence, corresponding to the prehistoric era before human civilization was recorded in writing. Those submerged settlements and remains still sleep on the seabed, awaiting rediscovery.
The Lingjiatan Line, approximately 20 meters above modern sea level. The coastline of approximately 5,400 years ago. The Houli culture, Beixin culture, Lingjiatan culture, Qujialing culture, and Hongshan culture were in their flourishing period before this. After the transgression, the Lingjiatan culture was forced to migrate to the Second Step, carrying its jade tradition and eight-pointed-star cosmology into the Loess Plateau. This line witnessed the first splendor and rupture of Chinese civilization on the Third Step. The Lingjiatan people possessed a complete social organizational structure and a mature rice-farming civilization; their jade-working precision reached an astonishing 0.15 millimeters. But the transgression brought all this to an abrupt halt. This 20-meter coastline is the earliest cultural annual ring of Chinese civilization cut off by seawater, recording how humanity rose in abundance and how it sank in seawater. The Lingjiatan ancestors carried their jades upstream along the Yangtze, bringing the cosmology of “round heaven, square earth” into the Loess Plateau, laying the foundation for the spatial philosophy of later Chinese civilization.
The Liangzhu-Sumer Line, approximately 66 meters above modern sea level. The coastline of approximately 4,200 years ago, which overlaid the previous coastline. This is the most severe known transgression event. Mount Tai became an island in the sea; the Sumerian civilization, Liangzhu civilization, Longshan civilization, and ancient Egyptian civilization simultaneously disappeared below this line and migrated on a large scale to the Second Step. The book describes: “The Sumerian civilization, Liangzhu civilization, Longshan civilization, Maya civilization, and ancient Egyptian civilization should have simultaneously disappeared below this transgression line and migrated on a large scale to the Second Step; afterward, humanity began a new civilization.” A sea-level rise of 66 meters is equivalent to the height of a 20-story building. Seawater spread to the foot of the Taihang Mountains, turning vast expanses of the Third Step into ocean. This 66-meter coastline is the most profound cultural annual ring in civilizational history: multiple early civilizations were cut off by the same line and began anew after the same line. The uniqueness of the Liangzhu-Sumer Line lies in its simultaneous severing of the two great civilizational systems, East and West. The Sumerian city-states of Mesopotamia and the Liangzhu ancient state of the lower Yangtze were destroyed by the same force at the same time, and human civilization thereby entered a new stage.
The Asia Line, modern sea level. The continental civilization line sedimented after approximately 1000 CE, running from the Yalu River estuary in the north to the Beilun River estuary in the south, over 18,000 kilometers long. Chinese civilization completed its final sedimentation on the Third Step. This line is the coastline familiar to us today, from the Bohai Sea to the Yellow Sea, from the East China Sea to the South China Sea. China's most economically active and densely populated coastal belt lies entirely along this line. This modern coastline is a cultural annual ring still growing today, recording the latest chapter of Chinese civilization living toward the sea.
These four lines, from deep sea to shallow sea to today's coast, each represents a formatting of civilization. The old civilization is swallowed by seawater; the survivors move to higher ground and begin anew on new land. Together they constitute the complete annual ring of Chinese civilization living toward the sea.
02 Transgression and Regression: Restart and Formatting of Civilization
The advance and retreat of the coastline is not an isolated natural phenomenon. It directly triggers civilization's most violent responses. Each marine transgression is a large-scale westward and northward migration of population, surging from the Third Step toward the Second Step. It is precisely at this scale that transgression is not a geographic concept but a watershed in civilizational history.
The book uses “sedimentary cyclical return” to describe the alternation of transgression and regression. When a regression sequence immediately follows a transgression sequence, the regular mirror-symmetric distribution of sediment composition, grain size, and fossils in the strata constitutes a sedimentary cyclical return.
The transgression of approximately 5,400 years ago raised sea level to approximately 20 meters above present. The Lingjiatan culture was forced to migrate, carrying its jade tradition and eight-pointed-star cosmology into the Loess Plateau.
The transgression of approximately 4,200 years ago raised sea level to approximately 66 meters above present. This is the most severe known transgression. The Liangzhu culture collapsed entirely; the Longshan culture and Shijiahe culture suffered severe damage. Seawater submerged broader expanses of the Third Step; Mount Tai became an island in the sea. The Book of Documents, Canon of Yao records: “Alas! The Four Mountains, the swelling flood is cutting off everything, vast and overwhelming, embracing the mountains and rising above the hills, boundless and flooding the heavens.” This is not myth but a true record of a 66-meter sea-level rise. The foot of the Taihang Mountains became coast; Mount Tai turned from continent into island.
The transgressions of 5,400 and 4,200 years ago were both global climatic disasters, but of different intensity and consequence. The Shijiahe culture (preceded by the Qujialing culture, approximately 5,100 to 4,500 years ago) reached its zenith between approximately 4,500 and 4,200 years ago, with city sites as grand as Liangzhu. The transgression of 5,400 years ago caused regional flooding below 20 meters in altitude; the Daxi culture declined as a result, but the Qujialing culture rose rapidly during the stable period, developing into the most powerful cultural community on the Jianghan Plain. The continuous development of Qujialing and Shijiahe proves that the transgression of 5,400 years ago was merely a civilizational oscillation above 20 meters, not an interruption.
Yet the transgression of 4,200 years ago was entirely different. The Shijiahe culture collapsed completely under this impact: the ancient city was abandoned, population plummeted. The Shijiahe culture had successfully crossed the transgression of 5,400 years ago but could not “escape” the one of 4,200 years ago. The Sumerian civilization had also crossed the 5,400-year transgression; the ancient city of Ur was rebuilt after the disaster, and the city-state continued for over a thousand years. But the transgression of 4,200 years ago likewise ended it: a 3.35-meter sand layer beneath Ur buried the city site, and the cuneiform king list was interrupted here. The difference between the two transgressions determined vastly different fates.
When the sea regressed, humanity returned to the newly exposed land. The Fan Gong Dike is the best example. In 1024 CE, Fan Zhongyan built the Fan Gong Dike by the sea in Yancheng, Jiangsu. At that time sea level was approximately one meter higher than today; the Fan Gong Dike was the true coastline. Now sea level has fallen, and the Fan Gong Dike lies approximately 80 to 100 kilometers from the coastline. That one-meter drop created tens of millions of mu of fertile fields, fed hundreds of millions of people, and gave birth to a group of great cities of global influence. Humanity is constantly seeking new living space amid such advance and retreat. When the sea advances, people retreat; when the sea retreats, people advance. Between the advance and retreat of the coastline lies the life and death of civilization.
Transgression and regression are not merely geographic changes but the restart and formatting of civilization. With each transgression, the old civilization is covered by seawater, and survivors carry cultural memory to higher ground; with each regression, new land emerges, and culture takes root again on the renewed earth. This restart is not forgetting but rebirth; this formatting is not erasure but reshaping. The three ancient coastlines superimposed form the complete sedimentary layer of Chinese civilization on the Third Step, and the complete annual ring belt of China's ancient cities.
03 The Glacier Line: The Mirror of the Coastline
The glacier line is likewise a cultural annual ring. One high, one low, it and the coastline jointly define the altitudinal range within which civilization can grow and to which it can retreat.
The book describes: “The sea (lake) coastline and the glacier line define the range of human survival.” When the coastline rises, the glacier line also rises; when the coastline falls, the glacier line also falls. The two lines remain synchronized. This cultural annual ring located at high altitude, together with the coastline at low altitude—one horizontal, one vertical—jointly frame the complete space of civilizational survival.
The glacier line is the boundary of freshwater reserves. Global warming causes glaciers to melt, sea level to rise, and freshwater to decrease. The book cites the IPCC prediction: “If temperature rises 4°C above pre-industrial levels, the ocean is most likely to rise approximately 9 meters, submerging the homes of over 3 billion people and affecting the lives of 5 billion.” A 9-meter sea-level rise means that Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, New York, London, Tokyo—nearly all major coastal cities worldwide—will face catastrophic disaster.
Glacier imbalance is becoming reality. On August 26, 2026, Gyirong Port in Gyirong County, Shigatse, Tibet, suffered a sudden debris flow disaster. The disaster originated from a glacier on the south slope of Langtang Lirung in Nepal, which fractured at approximately 5,200 meters, producing a rock-ice avalanche that fell rapidly to approximately 4,000 meters, scouring the mountain to form a giant debris flow that surged approximately 22 kilometers to reach Gyirong Port at approximately 1,800 meters. From glacier collapse to debris flow impact on the port, the entire process took only about 6 to 7 minutes. Su Pengcheng, a researcher at the Chengdu Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, noted that this disaster was caused by glacier destabilization under the long-term effects of climate warming; the disaster broke out suddenly, with large peak flow, fast movement, and strong destructiveness. Monitoring found that the ice-avalanche debris flow moved at approximately 50 meters per second, leaving the public almost no time to react. The same region had also experienced a mountain flood and debris flow caused by a glacial lake outburst on July 8, 2025, leaving 17 Chinese personnel missing. Globally, the 2016 Aru ice collapse in Rutog County, Ngari, Tibet; the 2021 rock-ice avalanche debris flow in the Indian mountains that killed over 200 people; and the 2025 Birch Glacier collapse in the Swiss Alps that destroyed a village—similar glacier destabilization events are occurring frequently in many parts of the world.
The advance and retreat of glaciers not only alter landforms but also leave their own cultural annual rings. The distribution of glacial till constitutes a “civilization line” sequence of the glacier line, recording traces of human activity at the plateau margins in different periods and marking the upper altitudinal limit of civilizational transmission. In warm periods glaciers retreat, humanity migrates to higher ground, and the Northern Qiang Route, Central Qiang Route, and Southern Qiang Route have abundant water and open passages; in cold periods glaciers advance, populations retreat to lower ground, and passages contract. The coastline records civilization's horizontal expansion below; the glacier line marks civilization's vertical fluctuation above.
In the book's framework of the “Great Corridor around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau,” the glacier line plays the role of a “water-source switch.” In warm periods glaciers melt, water supply to the Northern, Central, and Southern Qiang Routes increases, and passages open; in cold periods glaciers shrink, water supply decreases, and passages contract. The glacier line and the coastline, one low and one high, jointly determine the directions of human migration and the range of settlement. When the glacier line rises and the coastline rises, humanity's living space is squeezed from both sides. On one side seawater surges from the east; on the other glaciers retreat from the west; the land in between grows ever narrower.
The zone between the glacier line and the coastline is precisely humanity's comfort zone. The book states: “Between 30° and 35° north latitude, at 1,000 to 1,500 meters above sea level, lies the zone of greatest human comfort and the longest axis of human survival.” This zone lies precisely between the high-altitude glacier line and the low-altitude coastline, neither too cold and oxygen-poor from excessive altitude nor submerged by rising sea level. It avoids the severe cold of the glacier line and is far from the risks of the coastline. Over the 10,000 years of the interglacial period, this zone has preserved the most complete sequence of human civilizational evolution, from Denisovans to the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors, from the Three Dynasties and Nine Reigns to contemporary China; civilization has accumulated continuously here without interruption. The book further notes: “Each degree of latitude corresponds to approximately 1°C; each 100 meters of altitude to approximately 0.6°C. Between 25° and 40° north latitude lies a relatively stable 15-degree zone of human activity.” This is precisely the intermediate zone between the glacier line and the coastline, with the most stable climate, four distinct seasons without extremes—the most ideal place for long-term human settlement and continuous civilizational accumulation.
The collapse of the Gyirong Glacier reminds us that changes in the glacier line are occurring at speeds beyond expectation. Every movement of this line redraws the boundary of human survival.
04 Between Mountain and Sea: From Land Power to Sea Power
The glacier line and the coastline jointly construct the survival framework of human civilization. At a more macro scale, this framework presents itself as two mutually reflecting power transmission belts: the Great Corridor around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau on land, and the Great Pacific Coastal Corridor at sea.
The coastline is not only a geographic boundary but also a boundary of power. The book outlines two “great rings.” The Great Corridor around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau on land and the Great Pacific Coastal Corridor at sea pulse alternately with climatic cold and warmth, jointly shaping the spatial configuration of Chinese civilization.
In the era of land power, civilizational transmission depended on the Great Corridor around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The Northern Qiang Route connected Central Asia via the Pamirs; the Central Qiang Route connected the Western Regions via the Hexi Corridor; the Southern Qiang Route connected South Asia via the Hengduan Mountains. The three routes transmitted alternately, linking Mesopotamia, the Indus valley, and the Chinese hinterland into a civilizational network lasting thousands of years. That was the long migration of “living toward the mountains”: the driving force of civilization came from the plateau, from the collision of nomad and farmer, from the relay of horseback and camel caravan. This corridor transmitted not only goods and technology but also institutions and ideas. The Persian system of commanderies and counties, the Sogdian trade network, and the eastward transmission of Buddhism all entered China along this corridor.
In the era of sea power, civilizational transmission shifted to the Great Pacific Coastal Corridor. From the Bohai Sea to the South China Sea, an arc-shaped maritime corridor connected China with Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia. Zheng He's voyages were the peak of this great maritime ring, but the origins of maritime civilization lie far earlier. From the maritime livelihoods of the Yue people, who “used boats as carts and oars as horses,” to the prosperity of the maritime trade bureaus in the Tang and Song, to the full flourishing of the Maritime Silk Road during the Song-Yuan transition, China's coastal “living toward the sea” has never been interrupted. The spread of rice agriculture from the southeast coast to Taiwan, the Philippines, and the Southeast Asian islands step by step 7,000 to 6,000 years ago is the earliest evidence of this transmission belt. Coastal port cities in the Song-Yuan period were not only trade nodes but also hubs of cultural transmission. Spices, ivory, and glass beads entered by sea; porcelain, silk, and tea were exported by sea. The material and spiritual exchange between East and West was completed along the coastline.
From land power to sea power is not replacement but superimposition. The two great rings operate in the same latitudinal band: one a mountain road, one a waterway; one relying on camel caravans, one on monsoons. The two rings converge at the Nine-Palace. The Nine-Palace is not a barrier but a convergence point, enabling Chinese civilization to possess simultaneously the depth of inland rooting and the breadth of maritime extension. Land power provided civilization with depth; sea power opened its vision; the two complement each other in the Nine-Palace. In cold periods the land corridor contracts while the maritime corridor expands; in warm periods the land corridor expands while the maritime corridor contracts. The two rings wax and wane in the same climatic rhythm, jointly completing the reconfiguration of civilizational space.
Beyond the two great east-west rings, there also exist two north-south transmission belts. The Mongolian Plateau in the north is the source of nomadic forces moving south; the Xiongnu, Xianbei, Turks, Khitan, and Mongols successively moved south along this line. Each southward move brought a deep collision between grassland and farmland, giving birth to new civilizational forms. The South China Sea rim in the south is the confluence zone of rice agriculture and maritime civilization. Rice agriculture spread through the Pearl River basin to Southeast Asia, and the monsoons of the South China Sea fed Southeast and South Asian cultural elements back into China's coast. Port cities such as Guangzhou and Quanzhou thus became the front line of East-West civilizational exchange.
The two great east-west rings and the two north-south transmission belts are orthogonally superimposed in the Nine-Palace, pulsing together in the climatic cyclical return of cold and warmth; today's “Belt and Road” is precisely the contemporary continuation of these two great rings in the same latitudinal band, jointly constituting the complete, all-directional spatial configuration of Chinese civilization.
05 Frontier and Rear: From the Second Step to the Third Step
However the rings intertwine and the corridors extend, they ultimately point to the same spatial reality: the vitality of civilization switches repeatedly between frontier and rear. And today's frontier is precisely the most brilliant urban clusters sedimented by those three coastlines.
The three coastlines have sedimented on the Third Step the three most brilliant delta urban clusters: the Bohai Rim urban cluster, the Yangtze River Delta urban cluster, and the Pearl River Delta urban cluster. This is the most concentrated manifestation of coastline dividends and the frontier of civilization. “Over 42% of China's population and over 50% of its large and medium cities are concentrated in the narrow 200-kilometer coastal strip.” These three urban clusters are the epitome of this concentration trend.
The Bohai Rim urban cluster, relying on the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the Liaodong and Shandong peninsulas, is the largest coastal economic belt in the north. The Yangtze River Delta urban cluster, situated at the Yangtze estuary, is the contiguous zone with the highest economic output in China. The Pearl River Delta urban cluster, adjacent to the South China Sea, is the region with the densest population inflow since reform and opening up. The three are distributed along three different coastlines, formed in different eras, facing different transgression risks. They occupy large amounts of land, water, and energy, concentrating the nation's greatest wealth, densest population, and most advanced technology. The coastal regions gained vast land and enormous development dividends from the cold-period regressions of the past millennium.
But dividends are becoming risks. “Warm periods are reclaiming the land released by cold periods.”
“The Second Step is forever the strategic rear of the Third Step.” The Loess Plateau is precisely the rear base. Retreating from the Pearl River Delta toward the rear, one ascends step by step through Zhaoqing, Qingyuan, and Shaoguan, ultimately retreating to the vast hinterland of the Second Step; the Yangtze River Delta can retreat along the Yangtze corridor toward the Huizhou mountains; the Bohai Rim can retreat toward the southern foot of the Yanshan Mountains. When sea level rises, typhoons intensify, and storm surges strike, populations can retreat to higher ground, to the Second Step. This “frontier + rear” urban configuration is the complete, resilient one. A frontier without a rear is fragile; a rear without a frontier is closed. The Loess Plateau occupies the core pivotal position of the Nine-Palace in the “Heaven-Earth matrix,” a strategic location connecting the First and Third Steps, and the eastern convergence point of the Great Corridor around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Its loess layer is itself a silent history book, recording millions of years of climatic cyclical return and civilizational accumulation.
The three great urban clusters are not only economic highlands but also contemporary witnesses to Chinese civilization living toward the sea. They bear the maximization of coastline dividends and the concentration of coastline risks. Each transgression forces cultural reconstruction: the Lingjiatan people retreated to the Loess Plateau, the Liangzhu people retreated to Jing-Chu and Ba-Shu. Civilization completes reorganization, transformation, and a new departure in retreat. This reconstruction is not passive flight but a redefinition of civilization. Meeting such change with composure, facing such transformation with composure, can make the entire urban system more stable. There is no need to fear sea-level rise, but there is a need to prepare: to establish life corridors, to set up strategic rear areas, and to make the switching between frontier and rear an executable spatial strategy.
06 Living Toward the Sea: Infinite Splendor Lies on the Shoals
The book explicitly identifies a contradiction: “Humanity lives toward the sea. On the Third Step, a rise or fall of one meter in sea level will reduce or increase the freshwater land area by 100 kilometers from this coastline.”
“From a broad perspective, this is not only a zone of dividends but also a zone of danger.” This is the duality of the coastline. It is the most fertile place and the most dangerous; it nurtured the most splendid civilizations and swallowed the most ancient ones.
Disasters have never been absent from the coastline. Storm surges are one of the most violent impacts on the coastal zone: strong winds drive seawater to pile up toward shore, submerging land tens of kilometers deep within tens of hours. Typhoons are the most frequent threat to the coastline: tropical cyclones generated in the Philippine Sea move westward along the western Pacific, making landfall on China's southeast coast year after year in summer and autumn, bringing the triple blow of violent winds, torrential rain, and giant waves. Flooding is the chronic erosion of the coastline: obstructed river discharge, seawater backwater, and rising groundwater keep coastal lowlands soaked in water for long periods after heavy rain. These disasters shape the character of the coastline: it is both generous and violent.
Yet it is precisely these disasters that have given rise to unique coastline industries. The tropical agarwood tree, wounded by typhoons, secretes resin at the wound, which over years condenses into agarwood. Without the battering of typhoons, there is no formation of agarwood. Rice takes root in the silt after storm surges recede; sugarcane joints in the typhoon rains; rubber trees are tapped in the cycle of tropical cyclones. The industrial forms of coastlines in frigid regions are entirely different. Fishing is the oldest industry on cold-temperate and temperate coastlines. The cod of the North Atlantic, the salmon of the North Pacific, and the king crab of the Bering Sea sustained the civilizational processes of Northern Europe, northeastern North America, and Hokkaido, Japan. Cold seawater dissolves more oxygen and nutrients; cold currents bring abundant plankton, making high-latitude seas the world's largest fishing grounds. The logic of fishing differs from tropical plantation agriculture. It does not transform disaster into resource but transforms cold itself into resource. Without cold seawater there is no bountiful fishery. Tropical and frigid, planting and fishing, disaster transformation and cold utilization—coastline industries present entirely different appearances in different climatic zones, yet all follow the same law: infinite splendor lies on the shoals.
The Pearl River Delta is the risk region the book focuses on. The book cites an OECD report noting that Guangzhou's water risk ranks among the highest globally. The vast majority of the Pearl River Delta lies below one meter in altitude; if sea level rises another 0.45 meters, over a quarter of the land may become part of the sea. Nearly half the world's population lives in the coastal zone; two-fifths of cities with populations over one million are located in coastal areas. Here are concentrated the world's greatest wealth, densest population, and most advanced technology. The coastline is civilization's “line of glory.” Almost every leap of civilization has occurred on the coastline. From the Phoenicians of the Mediterranean to the ancient Greeks of the Aegean, from Portugal and Spain on the Atlantic coast to China and Japan on the Pacific coast, the coastline has always been the most active stage of civilization.
The solutions the book offers are systematic. First, cognitively acknowledge the duality of the coastline; second, spatially establish the “frontier + rear” urban configuration; finally, institutionally build multi-level life corridors. These life corridors at different elevation levels, though unable to guarantee against submergence, can guarantee sufficient time to transfer life and property to the corresponding safety line. This composed attitude is precisely the survival wisdom repeatedly tempered by Chinese civilization through transgression and regression. Mountain dwellers revere the snake; sea dwellers revere the bird; the Second and Third Steps also “come together in harmony.” Not forcibly opposing nature, but finding living space within nature's rhythm.
结语
Conclusion
The coastline and the glacier line are two cultural annual rings in the “Heaven-Earth matrix” inscribed by seawater and ice and snow. They do not often appear in daily vision, yet they delineate the east, west, north, and south boundaries of humanity's living space. The advance and retreat of the coastline determine how far humanity can live; the waxing and waning of the glacier line determine how long humanity can live. One marks the breadth of civilization below, the other defines its depth above.
The four coastlines, from 130 meters deep sea to 66 meters high ground, from 20 meters shoal to modern coastline, each represents a restart and formatting of civilization. Humanity is repeatedly driven from its homeland by seawater, and repeatedly returns to newly born land after the tide recedes. Every ancient coastline is a history book soaked in seawater, recording how civilization rose, how it sank, and how it began anew after the tide receded.
The glacier line likewise inscribes a similar fate: each advance means contraction, each retreat means release. One low and one high, one horizontal and one vertical with the coastline, together they frame the survival resilience and spatial depth of Chinese civilization. Between these two annual rings lies the most perilous and most glorious zone of civilization.
The Great Corridor around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau of the land-power era and the Great Pacific Coastal Corridor of the sea-power era are two parallel “great rings,” one leading to the continental hinterland, one to the maritime world. They operate in the same latitudinal band, jointly framing the spatial boundary of Chinese civilization. The three great coastal urban clusters are the concentrated manifestation of coastline dividends; the Loess Plateau is the strategic rear against coastline risk. Frontier and rear constitute the complete urban configuration.
Humanity lives toward the sea and retreats toward the mountains. When glaciers melt and sea level rises, humanity retreats to high ground, accumulating toward the mountains; when glaciers expand and sea level falls, humanity moves toward the ocean, settling toward the sea. Between advance and retreat there is always a road to take, land to till, a city to hold, a civilization to transmit. Though the coastline drifts continually, humanity remains always on that line. That is civilization's most glorious, most perilous, and most eternal lifeline.
