Between the Huai and the Si: An Underestimated Cradle of Civilization
Jiang Hongqing
引言
Introduction
To judge whether a region is a cradle of civilization, the key lies in whether it possesses independent origins, a complete evolutionary sequence, and sustained output capacity in the four core elements of civilization: writing, bronze, jade, and the city. The Huai River, together with the Yangtze, the Yellow River, and the Ji River (later silted up after the Yellow River changed course), was known in antiquity as one of the “Four Waterways.” The Huai River runs approximately 1,000 kilometers, spanning the five provinces of Henan, Hubei, Anhui, Jiangsu, and Shandong. Geographically, it is China’s natural north-south dividing line; culturally, it is the key link between north and south.
In the “Nine-Palace” framework constructed in Xuanhui, the four east-west river basin lines and the four north-south step lines are orthogonally superimposed, constituting the spatial substrate upon which Chinese civilization was generated and evolved.
The Huai River basin sits precisely at the “central palace” between the Yellow River and the Yangtze, between the Second and Fourth Steps. It is at once the center in orientation and the pivot in structure, the key node connecting the four directions. But the Huai River’s uniqueness lies further in this: in its important sections it runs northwest to southeast, a direction precisely aligned with the great directions of the southeast-northwest “monsoon” and the Yellow River-Yangtze “civilizational” transmission. It is not a passive “transitional zone” but an active “connector,” a natural channel for the bidirectional transmission of climatic and civilizational elements downstream and upstream. From the Jiahu incised marks to the Yinxu oracle bones, writing was nurtured here; from Sanguanmiao to Taijiasi, bronze was smelted here; from the Hongshan culture to the Lingjiatan culture, jade was continued here; from Gaixia to Yuhuicun, cities grew here. The Huai River basin has achievements in all four dimensions no less than those of the Yellow River and the Yangtze; it is the cumulative thought and self-creation of Chinese civilization at the central palace position. It is precisely this sustained output from the “central palace” position that bridged the cultural gulf between the Yangtze and the Yellow River, providing the underlying support for Chinese civilization’s movement from diversity to unity.
01 The Cradle of Writing
The invention of writing is the hallmark of humanity’s entry into civilized society. In this domain, the Huai River basin possesses an uninterrupted sequence of writing germination and evolution from 8,000 to 3,000 years ago—a sequence rare in the world. It is not an isolated accumulation of symbols but a complete chain with internal logic and developmental trajectory.
The Jiahu site, dating to approximately 9,000-7,500 years ago, is the starting point of this sequence. The site yielded 17 incised symbols, respectively carved on turtle shells, bone tools, stone tools, and pottery. These symbols are not simple decoration but possess clear ideographic function, belonging to a “quasi-writing” stage. Among them, the symbols on turtle shells are especially important, because turtle shells later became the primary divination medium in Shang dynasty oracle bone script. The Jiahu ancestors had already chosen the same writing medium as the Yinxu diviners—a fact of profound significance in itself. Jiahu also yielded the world’s earliest bone flutes, capable of playing a complete seven-note scale. The simultaneous appearance of writing and music means that the Huai River ancestors already possessed systematic symbolic encoding capacity 8,000 years ago, able to record and transmit abstract information through symbols. A civilization that simultaneously created writing and music had already acquired the capacity to externalize inner conceptions into symbols—precisely the crucial step of civilization from chaos to order: the generalization of totem and music.
The Shuangdun site, dating to approximately 7,300 years ago, pushed the sequence of writing evolution to a new height. Over 630 incised symbols were unearthed here, the largest number of symbols from any site of China’s mid-Neolithic period. The symbols are carved on the bottoms of pottery, covering scenes of sun, moon, and stars; mountains, rivers, plants, and animals; fishing, hunting, and farming. Scholars classify the functions of Shuangdun symbols into three categories: ideographic, tally, and numerical. Ideographic symbols express meaning directly through images, such as wavy lines for water; tally symbols may be markers of the maker or clan; numerical symbols record quantities. More critically, Shuangdun symbols are identified as being at the “phrase-writing stage” of writing’s origin: the ancestors could already use groups of symbols to express complete semantic units, not merely isolated marks. This is 4,000 years earlier than oracle bone script. The richness of Shuangdun symbols shows that the ancestors had already accumulated enough symbols to cover all aspects of daily life. The appearance of Shuangdun symbols is not isolated; it exists within a larger symbolic network. The incised symbols unearthed at Bengbu Shuangdun, Huaibei Lieshan, and Suzhou Xiaoshankou share a common symbolic system, indicating that the middle Huai River region had already formed a cross-settlement symbolic exchange network in the mid-Neolithic period.
Other early civilizations of the world—Sumerian cuneiform, ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs—mostly appeared suddenly, their origins difficult to trace, as if from nothing overnight. The evolution of writing in the Huai River basin presents an entirely different picture: from the Jiahu symbols of 8,000 years ago, to the Shuangdun symbols of 7,000 years ago, to the Dawenkou symbols of 5,000 years ago and the Longqiu symbols of 4,000 years ago, down to the Yinxu oracle bone script of 3,000 years ago, the Huai River basin formed a complete sequence of symbolic evolution. Southern Henan and northwestern Anhui are precisely the “zone of Yi-Xia-Shang convergence,” and the “southernmost division of pre-Shang culture.” Academia holds that the Shang clan originated in the east and was closely related to the Huai River basin. Shang oracle bone script made extensive use of the symbolic system that had been transmitted in the Huai River basin for thousands of years. Chinese writing did not suddenly appear at Yinxu but underwent 5,000 years of gestation in the Huai River basin, never interrupted. This symbolic system ultimately became the spiritual bond unifying Chinese civilization. The Huai River basin thereby became the earliest spatial foundation of “the same writing for all” in Chinese civilization.
02 The Furnace of Bronze
Bronze civilization is the core hallmark of the Three Dynasties of Xia, Shang, and Zhou. In this domain too, the Huai River basin left a complete evolutionary trajectory, continuing from the Xia dynasty to the late Warring States, never interrupted.
In the Xia dynasty, the Sanguanmiao site yielded 18 bronze vessels, the largest number of Xia dynasty bronzes from any site other than Erlitou. The vessel types and decorative patterns are highly consistent with Erlitou while retaining local characteristics, proving that the Huai River basin not only accepted Central Plains culture but was an active participant. In the Shang dynasty, the Taijiasi site revealed a complete bronze-casting workshop and mold-casting tools, overturning the academic conclusion that “bronze vessels could not be cast outside the Shang capital.” Taijiasi, located in Funan, Anhui, was a high-ranking central settlement of the Huai River basin in the Shang dynasty. Within the site were found a square ring moat, large palace building foundations, and a complete set of facilities for casting bronze vessels. This means the Huai River basin independently mastered the entire production process from mold-making and smelting to casting. The Run River where Taijiasi is located was a channel connecting the Huai and Ru rivers, playing an important role in the Shang dynasty’s relations with the “Huai Yi” and in the “southward transport of copper.” The repeated appearance of the two characters “Huai Yi” in oracle bone script confirms the Shang dynasty’s high attention to the Huai River basin. From the Western Zhou to the Spring and Autumn period, the bronze civilization of the Huai River basin continued to develop, as evidenced by the discovery of the Zhongli Junbo bronze chime bells. The tomb of Zhongli Junbo is located in Fengyang, Anhui; a complete set of bronze chime bells was unearthed, whose tonal system differs from the Zhou ritual system of the Central Plains, retaining distinct local characteristics. This discovery shows that the bronze civilization of the Huai River basin, while absorbing Central Plains ritual systems, also maintained its own cultural independence. From the Xia dynasty to the Warring States, the bronze civilization of the Huai River basin was never interrupted, leaving representative artifacts synchronized with the Central Plains yet possessing local characteristics in every period.
In the late Warring States period, the state of Chu moved its capital to Shouchun, and the bronze civilization since the Xia, Shang, and Zhou reached its final peak here. The Zhuke Great Ding, unearthed in 1933 from the tomb of King You of Chu at Lisan’gudui, Shouxian, stands 113 centimeters tall and weighs 400 kilograms, the largest and heaviest three-legged round ding of the Eastern Zhou. Twelve characters are inscribed on its rim, proclaiming Chu’s ambition to “secure the state and ask the weight of the world.” During the War of Resistance it was evacuated south with the Palace Museum collections, surviving after moving through Chongqing, Yibin, and Leshan; it is one of China’s first batch of cultural relics prohibited from exhibition abroad. The Bronze Huo Great Ding, unearthed in 2024 from the tomb of King Kaolie of Chu at Wuwangdun, Huainan, has a mouth diameter exceeding 88 centimeters, the largest Warring States ding seen to date. The huo ding is plain and unadorned yet reaches the extreme in volume. King Kaolie of Chu launched the last alliance against Qin; fifteen years after his death Chu fell, and this giant ding stands by the Huai River. The E Jun Qi Bronze Tallies, unearthed in 1957 at Shouxian, are water-and-land transit tallies issued by King Huai of Chu, cast in bronze, shaped like split bamboo, with gold-inlaid inscriptions recording transport routes and prohibitions—China’s earliest tax-exempt “passport.” The Dragon-Tiger Pattern Four-Ring Bronze Drum Base, unearthed in 1980 from a Spring and Autumn tomb at Jiulidun, Shucheng, weighs approximately 67 kilograms and fuses Central Plains and Chu styles. The Wu Wang Guang Bronze Basin, unearthed in 1955 from the tomb of the Marquis of Cai at Shouxian, is a dowry ritual vessel from the King of Wu marrying his daughter to the Marquis of Cai. The Cloud-Pattern Bronze Five-Pillar Vessel, unearthed in 1959 at Tunxi, is unique in form, its function still a mystery; because its shape resembles a modern router, netizens jokingly call it the “bronze router.” The Inlaid Bronze Hu with Scenes of Social Life is a major Warring States bronze, its body depicting with inlay technique a complete social scene from mulberry-picking and archery to banqueting and shooting—hailed as the Warring States “Along the River During the Qingming Festival.” Together these objects constitute the complete spectrum of bronze civilization in the Huai River basin from ritual to daily life, from heavy vessels to light objects.
The Huai Yi people played a key role in the transmission of bronze technology. During the Shang and Zhou periods, the “Huai Yi” were an important people active in the middle and lower Huai River, frequently recorded in oracle bone and bronze inscriptions. They did not passively accept Central Plains culture but independently mastered bronze-casting technology. The discovery of the Taijiasi bronze-casting workshop shows that the Huai Yi not only used bronze vessels but possessed the full-process capacity to produce them independently, becoming an important intermediary for the southward transmission of Shang bronze culture. The bronze-casting technology represented by Taijiasi radiated along the Huai River and its tributaries to all parts of the Jianghuai region, constituting a complete “Huai bronze technology sphere” during the Shang and Zhou periods. From Sanguanmiao to Taijiasi to Shouchun, the bronze civilization of the Huai River basin witnessed the complete course of Chinese bronze culture’s transition, fusion, and re-creation from Central Plains style to southern style.
03 The Philosophical Thought of Jade
If writing is the record of the wisdom of the Huai River ancestors, and bronze is the symbol of power, then jade is the carrier of their spiritual world. The Lingjiatan site, dating to approximately 5,800-5,300 years ago, is known together with the Hongshan culture and Liangzhu culture as one of China’s three great prehistoric jade culture centers. In the domain of jade too, the Huai River basin created achievements worthy of standing alongside the Yellow River and Yangtze basins.
The craftsmanship precision of Lingjiatan jades is breathtaking. On the back of a jade human figure, the perforation diameter is as fine as a hair, achieved through micro-carving with bamboo tubes, quartz sand, and water, reaching a precision of 0.15 millimeters. A large jade pig weighing 88 kilograms could only be completed by organizing social labor on a considerable scale. The most stunning aspect of Lingjiatan jades lies in their intellectual content. The jade plaque is incised with 23 drill holes, an eight-pointed star pattern, and gui-shaped ornaments, interpreted by scholars as the prototype of the Luoshu, the Eight Trigrams, and even the calendar. The central eight-pointed star on the plaque represents the sun; the eight “gui”-shaped patterns between the two circles represent the eight directions; the four-corner “gui”-shaped patterns represent the four dimensions. Scholar Feng Shi has verified that the graphics on the plaque correspond to the Eight Trigrams system of the Zhouyi, constituting the most complete material expression of prehistoric cosmology.
The jade plaque was unearthed sandwiched within a jade turtle shell, with the carapace curved and the plastron square, embodying the cosmology of “round heaven, square earth.” “Round heaven, square earth” is not an abstract slogan but a reality materialized by jade workers 5,000 years ago into something touchable and worshipable. The combination of the jade turtle enclosing the jade plaque means the ancestors had already integrated cosmology, orientation, and time into a complete system of thought. The cosmology displayed by Lingjiatan jades includes the celestial pole, yin and yang, the Eight Trigrams, and the four seasons and eight nodes—ideas systematically recorded only in pre-Qin texts, yet materialized in jade form 5,000 years ago.
The deep connection between Lingjiatan and Shuangdun is the unique spiritual tradition of the Huai River basin. Shuangdun incised symbols achieved symbolic encoding capacity; Lingjiatan jade plaques achieved the materialized expression of cosmology. The two capacities evolved synchronously within a space of no more than a few hundred kilometers on either bank of the Huai River. This means the Huai River ancestors had already simultaneously mastered symbolic encoding and cosmological construction 5,000 years ago; between the germination of writing and the germination of philosophy, the Huai River basin completed a deep integration of spirit and symbol. Lingjiatan had deep exchanges with Hongshan and Liangzhu: Hongshan jade features are reflected in Lingjiatan, and the Lingjiatan jade tradition was inherited by Liangzhu. The Huai River is the jade culture pivot connecting northern Hongshan and southern Liangzhu. A clear artistic transmission path exists among the Hongshan jade dragon, the Lingjiatan jade human figure, and the Liangzhu jade cong; the form of the cong—square outside, round inside—is the material expression of the “round heaven, square earth” cosmology. From Lingjiatan, spreading south to Liangzhu and north to Hongshan, it ultimately became the common cosmological cognition of Chinese civilization. After Lingjiatan, the jade tradition of the Huai River basin was not interrupted. Jade zhang and jade ge of the Longshan culture unearthed in the Jianghuai region continue the craftsmanship tradition and cosmological expression of Lingjiatan, becoming one of the important sources of the ritual jade system of the Xia, Shang, and Zhou. Jade zhang has been found at both Erlitou and Sanxingdui, and its prototype can be traced precisely to the jade tradition of the Longshan period in the Huai River basin. As the pivot of jade culture, the Huai River linked northern Hongshan and southern Liangzhu into one, enabling the three core ritual jades—cong, bi, and zhang—to complete distinctive interpretations in different regions, ultimately converging into the common ritual jade system of Chinese civilization.
04 The Dawn of the City
The emergence of the city is an important marker of civilizational formation. The prehistoric cities of the Huai River basin developed in step with those of the Yellow River and Yangtze basins, never falling behind.
The Gaixia site filled the gap of no prehistoric city site in Anhui. Gaixia ancient city is the “first city of the Dawenkou culture” in the Huai River basin. From a small settlement in the late Dawenkou culture to a regional cultural center in the Longshan period, Gaixia witnessed a clear trajectory of settlement evolution. City walls, moats, and large building foundations prove that the late Dawenkou culture already possessed the social capacity to organize large-scale public works. Social organization had evolved from blood relations to territorial relations. The appearance of Gaixia means the Huai River basin had entered a complex social stage approximately 5,000 years ago. Gaixia ancient city is square, approximately 150,000 square meters in area, with city wall foundations approximately 20 meters wide and moats approximately 25 meters wide. Its form resembles Longshan culture city sites of the Central Plains yet carries the unique water-system defense characteristics of the Huai River basin, embodying the fusion of northern and southern city-building techniques.
The Yuhuicun site pushed the urbanization of the Huai River basin to a new height. The Longshan culture city site in the core area of the site dates to 4,400-4,100 years ago, at least 180,000 square meters in scale, the largest and highest-ranking Longshan culture city site in the middle Huai River. Within a surrounding area of 2 million square meters, Longshan culture remains are scattered, reflecting the social background of accelerated population growth and centralization in the middle Huai River region during the Longshan era. The construction date of Yuhuicun roughly coincides with the zenith of Liangzhu ancient city and the founding period of Shimao ancient city; the Huai River basin occupied a key position in the early urbanization process. More importantly, the Yuhuicun site perfectly matches the record that “Yu gathered the lords at Mount Tu, and those holding jade and silk numbered ten thousand states.” The carefully designed and constructed large T-shaped altar of 2,000 square meters and the ritual-oriented assemblage of objects at the site broadly re-enact the scene of clan tribes from different regions holding large gatherings and sacrificial activities here. The Yuhuicun site has been characterized as a “large-scale ceremonial architectural foundation,” meaning the prehistoric society of the Huai River basin already possessed the capacity to organize large-scale public sacrifices and coordinate cross-regional clan tribes.
The city sites of the Huai River basin are found not only along the main stream of the Huai but also along its tributaries such as the Ying, Guo, and Sui rivers, forming a “Huai-along city site cluster.” The sites are spaced approximately 30 to 50 kilometers apart, constituting a dense urban network system in the middle Huai River, reflecting the trend of regional political integration in the late Longshan era. The prehistoric social complexification of the Huai River basin underwent a clear evolutionary trajectory. From socioeconomic, settlement morphology to thought and culture, the region experienced evolution from simple to complex, from egalitarian society to stratified society. After the mid-Neolithic period, especially in the late Dawenkou culture, the speed and scale of social development made marked progress; a four-level social organization of clan, lineage, extended family, and nuclear family may have been universally present in settlements. The number of prehistoric settlements in the Huai River basin grew from few to many, with scale gradually expanding; the appearance of public works and ceremonial architecture marked the beginning of social power concentration. Their form, with a particular preference for the round—round ding, round city—may be related to their phoenix-bird solar worship, unlike the square ding and square city of the Central Plains. Around 4,200 years ago, the Meishan culture of the Huai River basin even entered the middle Yangtze region, further proving the radiating power and influence of the Huai River basin in early civilizational interaction. If the scope is expanded to the Huai-Si periphery and even to the Central Plains, the number and density of cities with over 3,000 years of city-building history in this region are the highest, making it the core incubation zone of China’s ancient cities and the key zone of the most concentrated early state capitals. The triple evidence of city sites, ceremonial centers, and social stratification closely links the urbanization process of the Huai River basin to the formative period of Chinese civilization.
05 The Axis of Thought
The Huai River basin is not only a highland of material civilizational innovation but also the axis zone of intellectual civilization. If one seeks a spatial coordinate for the “Axial Age” of Chinese civilization, the Huai River basin is precisely the origin of that coordinate.
During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, Central Plains culture, Jing-Chu culture, Qi-Lu culture, and Wu-Yue culture blended, surged, and collided in the Huai River basin, giving rise to a unique Huai River culture. Confucian representatives Confucius and Mencius, Daoist representatives Laozi and Zhuangzi, and Mohist and other cultural elites gathered and were active in the Huai River basin. As some scholars have pointed out, traditional Chinese culture has two main trunks: one is Confucian culture originating in the Zhu-Si basin, the other is Daoist culture originating in the Guo-Huai basin. Both trunks unfold around the Huai River basin. According to documentary records, among the Hundred Schools of Thought, the most important schools are Confucianism, Daoism, Mohism, and Legalism; their founders or core transmitters are all closely associated with the Huai River basin. The thoughts of Laozi, Confucius, Guanzi, Mozi, Zhuangzi, and Mencius spread, collided, converged, and developed here, forming an inclusive and open cultural atmosphere and giving rise to an exceptionally brilliant peak of thought and culture in Chinese history. As the core zone of intellectual convergence, the Huai River basin was not the exclusive domain of any single school but the public space of the Hundred Schools contending.
The foundation of Confucianism lies on the northern edge of the Huai River. Confucius was born in the state of Lu; his thought directly inherited the ritual and musical tradition of the Zhou dynasty. The Zhu-Si basin was a Zhou enfeoffment, where the Way of Duke Zhou, centered on virtue and ritual, was transmitted generation after generation; Western Zhou ritual and musical culture was precisely the soil from which Confucianism arose. Confucius once “asked Laozi about ritual,” and Laozi was a man of Kuxian in the middle Huai River. The two great intellectual sources met in the context of the Huai River basin. Confucianism’s “subduing the self and returning to ritual” and Daoism’s “the Dao follows nature” appear opposed yet are in fact complementary, constituting the spiritual tension of Chinese civilization. This tension is not simple compromise but the maintenance of tension at the point of convergence and the search for balance in collision—precisely the unique contribution of the Huai River basin as the axis of thought.
The source of Daoism lies in the core zone of the Huai River basin. Laozi was a man of Kuxian, present-day Luyi, Henan; Zhuangzi was a man of Mengcheng by the Guo River, present-day Mengcheng, Anhui. The two philosophers founded the source of Daoist thought. Laozi’s “the Dao follows nature” and “the highest good is like water,” Zhuangzi’s “free and easy wandering” and “the equality of things”—their underlying tone is precisely the natural and life view of the Huai River basin. Laozi-Zhuangzi philosophy has distinct Chu cultural characteristics; the Laozi contains a great deal of Chu vocabulary. Laozi’s reverence for water and black corresponds to the nature worship and color worship of the Chu region. The Guo-Huai basin where they lived was a contested ground of Chu, Wu, and Qi, absorbing Xia-Shang culture while being steeped in Chu wind and Wu rain. Laozi’s philosophy runs through Heaven, Earth, and Human with the Way of natural non-action, exploring cosmology and the philosophy of life; important concepts in Chinese philosophy—Dao, De, being, non-being, Taiji, Wuji, mind, nature—were all first created by Daoism. Their thought grew from this land. Guanzi was a man of the Huai River basin; his thought on the Way of Heaven influenced Laozi’s discourse on the Dao. As prime minister of Qi, Guanzi’s idea that “when the granaries are full, people know ritual; when clothing and food are sufficient, people know honor and shame” is in the same lineage as the pragmatic and enterprising ethos of the Huai River basin, becoming an important source of the later “statecraft” thought. The story of Yu the Great controlling floods at Mount Tu took place in the Huai River basin; Yu, following the natural nature of water, controlled floods by dredging, inspiring Laozi’s naturalism. Legalist thought also had important influence on the northern edge of the Huai River basin; Han Feizi, as a prince of Han, had thought deeply connected to the rule-of-law tradition of the Central Plains and northern Huai River.
The Huai River basin was an important zone of Chinese intellectual and cultural exchange in the pre-Qin period. The Huainanzi was born here; the Daodejing, Journey to the West, and Shuowen Jiezi and other classics all have deep roots in the Huai River basin. The Huainanzi, compiled by Liu An, Prince of Huainan of the Western Han, who gathered guests to write it, is precisely the culminating work of the Huai River basin’s “inclusive” intellectual tradition, fusing Daoism, Confucianism, Legalism, and Yin-Yang into one furnace, embodying the unique integrative capacity of the Huai River basin.
Buddhism also took deep root in the Huai River basin. Mount Jiuhua is the bodhimanda of Ksitigarbha; Daoism also has a tradition on Mount Jiuhua; the three teachings of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism blend and coexist harmoniously here. Confucian scholars of successive dynasties also lived in seclusion and studied here; in the Ming dynasty, Wang Yangming and Zhan Ruoshui successively founded academies here. Mount Jiuhua fuses the “ritual order” and “principle” of the northern Yellow River basin while absorbing the “inwardness” and “metaphysics” of the southern Yangtze basin; the three teachings on one mountain mean different intellectual systems are compatible here. From Confucius at the foot of Mount Tai, to Laozi and Zhuangzi by the Guo River, to Ksitigarbha atop Mount Jiuhua, the three peaks of thought unfold in sequence around the Huai River. Northern “ritual order” and “principle,” southern “inwardness” and “metaphysics” collide and fuse here—precisely the deep implication of the Huai River basin as the confluence of northern and southern cultures.
06 The Continuation of Innovation
The civilizational history of the Huai River basin is precisely a history of continuous innovation.
The innovation gene of the Huai River basin has never been interrupted. Hefei, the city on the banks of the Nanfei River, a tributary of the Huai, has become one of the core engines of China’s scientific and technological innovation.
The transmission of writing has never been interrupted. iFlytek converts speech into text, breaking communication boundaries with multimodal interaction, continuing the Huai River information tradition from Jiahu incised marks and Shuangdun symbols to oracle bone script and “the same writing for all.” From incised marks to speech, from writing to interaction—one continuous lineage. The seed of bronze has never been extinguished. From the Zhuke Great Ding to the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST), from several thousand degrees Celsius to hundreds of millions of degrees, the art of fire has continued in the Huai River basin for three thousand years. EAST, hailed as the “artificial sun,” pushes the craft of the Bronze Age toward humanity’s exploration of ultimate energy. The questioning of the Way of Heaven has never ceased. The sun pattern on the Lingjiatan jade plaque is the record of the Huai River ancestors observing the Way of Heaven; today’s optical quantum communication and optical quantum computing are the application of the laws of the Way of Heaven; from the artificial sun to deep-space exploration, it is dialogue and questioning of the order of the Way of Heaven. From “revering Heaven” to “exploring Heaven,” the Huai River basin has always walked with the Way of Heaven. Hefei’s quantum cluster possesses the “Micius” satellite, the “Beijing-Shanghai Trunk Line,” and the “Jiuzhang” quantum computer, and has become a global leader in quantum technology. Deep-space exploration is likewise at the forefront, continuing the ancient dream of the Huai River ancestors to “seek from Heaven.” Hefei has advanced to the forefront in four major fields—quantum information, fusion energy, deep-space exploration, and speech interaction—becoming a frontier city of future technology.
The water conservancy innovation of the Huai River basin likewise constitutes a complete thread of technological evolution. From the legend of Yu the Great “leading the Huai from Tongbai,” to the Quebei reservoir built by Sunshu Ao in the Huai River basin during the Spring and Autumn period. Quebei is one of China’s earliest large-scale water storage and irrigation projects, over 2,600 years old, and still performs irrigation functions in the Shouxian area today, making the middle Huai River a stable agricultural region and providing a solid material foundation for the continuation of civilization in the Huai River basin. During the Three Kingdoms period, Cao Cao dug canals in the Huai River basin, connecting the Guo and Ying rivers, opening the waterway from the Central Plains to the Jianghuai region, making the Huai River basin a front-line position and material transit hub during the period of north-south confrontation, and evolving the water conservancy works of the Huai River basin from simple irrigation toward a comprehensive water transport system. During the Northern Song, the court built ponds and dikes on a large scale in the Huai River basin, forming a complete farmland water conservancy system that integrated irrigation, flood control, and navigation into a unified technical framework, making the middle Huai River one of the most important grain-producing regions in the country at the time. Quebei, Cao Cao’s canals, and the Northern Song ponds and dikes—these three water conservancy projects interlink to constitute the complete water-control technology sequence of the Huai River basin from the pre-Qin to the Tang-Song. This water-control wisdom of “following the nature of water and guiding according to circumstance” is in the same lineage as Laozi’s philosophy of “the Dao follows nature,” and also connects the legend of Yu the Great “leading the Huai to the sea” with today’s water conservancy works in the Huai River basin into a water-control tradition stretching over thousands of years.
The innovative tradition of the Huai River basin extends beyond science and technology. Guanzi’s economic reforms such as “official management of mountains and seas” and the “nine offices of light and heavy” had their intellectual roots in the commercial tradition of the Huai River basin, constituting one of the earliest systematic economic governance practices in Chinese history. Guanzi brought “righteousness” and “profit” into a unified framework, in the same lineage as the pragmatic character of the Huai River basin as a north-south hub. In 1978, Xiaogang Village in Fengyang opened the prelude to rural reform; the “household responsibility system” likewise grew from this land, a modern response to Guanzi’s “when the granaries are full, people know ritual.” From Guanzi’s economics to the Xiaogang contract, the Huai River basin has always maintained an innovative spirit of “daring to be first in the world.”
结语
Conclusion
The position of the Huai River basin in the map of Chinese civilization can be summed up in one word: cradle.
In writing, it possesses an 8,000-year unbroken evolutionary sequence, from Jiahu to Yinxu, constituting the complete chain of China’s writing origin; in bronze, from Sanguanmiao to the Zhuke Great Ding, spanning the complete development of the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties, Taijiasi’s independent casting capacity overturns the “capital-centrism” theory; the Lingjiatan jade plaque carries a complete cosmology, ranking alongside Hongshan and Liangzhu as the three great prehistoric jade culture centers; the prehistoric city site cluster of Gaixia and Yuhuicun proves that the urbanization process of the Huai River basin never lagged behind the Yellow River and Yangtze basins. The independent origins and complete evolution in four dimensions constitute the entire evidence of the Huai River as a cradle of civilization.
In the intellectual domain, Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism unfold in sequence around the Huai River; northern “ritual order” and “principle,” southern “inwardness” and “metaphysics” blend here, completing the balance and unity of the spiritual tension of Chinese civilization.
From incised marks to multimodal interaction, from casting ding to controlled nuclear fusion, from sun patterns to EAST, from revering and sacrificing to Heaven to questioning and exploring Heaven, from “leading the Huai to the sea” to the water conservancy sequence, from Guanzi’s statecraft to Xiaogang Village’s household responsibility system, from material to spiritual, from technology to institution, the innovation gene of the Huai River basin has passed through 8,000 years without interruption, witnessing the complete course of Chinese civilization from origin to renewal.
The “great unity” configuration of Chinese civilization has never been maintained by military conquest or political institutions alone; it depends more on the unity of underlying cultural elements. Writing, ritual, technology, thought—these constituents of the civilizational core require a spatial platform capable of spanning north and south and connecting east and west to achieve integration. The Huai River basin is precisely this platform. It is neither the Yellow River nor the Yangtze, yet it enables the civilizational elements between the Yellow River and the Yangtze to circulate, blend, and integrate, ultimately sedimenting into a unified Chinese civilization. From the Jiahu incised marks to the Hefei quantum, the Huai River has always provided underlying support for the “great unity” of Chinese civilization.
The Huai River does not contend, so nothing under heaven can contend with it; the Huai River does not close itself, so no civilization can cut itself off from it.
