Introduction: Carving the Boat to Seek the Sword

Civilization moves with human migration; history is like a boat on a long river. If historical fact is the "sword," then carving the boat to seek the "sword" becomes delusion: by the time we find the "sword," the "boat" has long since drifted away. We cannot say that having found the "sword," the "sword" is ours. To find the "sword" and seek the "boat" is to recover the thread and to recover a more objective historical regularity.

This book's analysis of Sanxingdui is a deduction based on the two transgressions of 5,400–4,200 years ago. The Sanxingdui artifacts are not motionless but a movable "sword"—objects of the "alien other," burned and buried by the victors of a "holy war." The traces of foreign influence on the Sichuan Basin since antiquity are clear, and the "boats" of the past are beyond counting.

Sanxingdui is not a "lost civilization." It is first of all a climatic disaster: the transgression of 4,200 years ago drove the Liangzhu and the Sumerians from opposite directions into the same basin, where they collided, contended, and displaced one another within an enclosed space. It is also a spatial event, recording the termination of a cross-step migration, a confrontation between the theocentric and the human-centric, and the rupture and restart of a key node on the Great Corridor around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Sanxingdui's true value lies in its being one of the most completely preserved material cross-sections within the Great Corridor's civilizational transmission system, compressing the entire process of cross-step migration, collision, selection, and sedimentation into a single set of strata. It is the living archive of the Great Corridor's evolution, the materialized cross-section of eight thousand years of civilizational transmission. In this book's reading, the core of Sanxingdui is not the human-centric ritual vessel system of Central Plains civilization but a complete transmission and sedimentation of the theocratic civilization of the Great Corridor's western end at its East Asian terminus. Sanxingdui is not merely a Chinese archaeological site but the common heritage of the Eurasian continent's Great Corridor civilization.

Sanxingdui's secret lies within a larger framework: the Great Corridor around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The Great Corridor consists of three main routes—the Northern, Central, and Southern Qiang Routes—and is the vertical channel of climate-driven migration and civilizational exchange. It is an open system: no walls, only passages; no center, only nodes. In warm periods populations gather at high altitudes; in cold periods they disperse to low altitudes; the Great Corridor bears one vertical cyclical return after another. The Sichuan Basin, where Sanxingdui lies, is precisely the eastern terminus of the Southern Qiang Route. Ore from the Afghan plateau was smelted and cast in Mesopotamia; the finished products entered the Chengdu Plain along the Southern Qiang Route—and those who carried them brought not only objects but an entire theocratic system. This "sword" does not belong to the Central Plains; it belongs to the Great Corridor.

01 Climatic Disaster

Around 4,200 years ago, the four earliest civilizations on Earth had each developed to their own heights. The Old Kingdom of ancient Egypt in the Nile valley had entered its pyramid-building phase, establishing a pharaoh-centered centralized system whose architectural and mathematical achievements remain astonishing today. The Sumerian civilization of Mesopotamia had existed for thousands of years; they invented cuneiform, the sexagesimal system, and the wheeled chariot, and built a city-state-based political system. The Epic of Gilgamesh recorded their heroic legends, the Sumerian King List recorded generations of rulers, and their astronomical and mathematical knowledge laid a solid foundation for later ages. The Harappan civilization of the Indus valley possessed rigorously planned brick cities, a standardized system of weights and measures covering the entire Indus plain, and an urban drainage and sanitation system unparalleled at the time; its urban layout embodied a high degree of social organization and planning capacity. The Liangzhu civilization of the lower Yangtze in China was based on rice agriculture, built large-scale water conservancy systems, and established a clearly stratified social order using jade cong as ritual vessels; its jade-working precision reached an astonishing 0.15 millimeters, and a large water conservancy system of 11 dams covering 100 square kilometers was discovered on the outskirts of the ancient city—one of the largest water projects in the world at the time. A city of 3 square kilometers equipped with a water system covering 100 square kilometers: a difference of more than thirty times. Such a ratio is difficult to explain through the normal settlement-engineering relationship; it can only indicate that Liangzhu was facing flood pressure far beyond everyday experience.

Yet around 4,200 years ago, the global climate underwent violent mutation. Greenland ice-core oxygen isotope records show a severe cooling event lasting decades around 2200 BCE. Stalagmite oxygen isotope records from both northern and southern China synchronously indicate this drought lasting nearly 200 years, with the Asian monsoon suddenly weakening. Archaeological strata in Mesopotamia revealed wind-deposited sand layers several meters thick. The stratigraphic section at Liangzhu clearly records silt accumulation and cultural-layer interruption caused by transgression. Four independent lines of evidence point to the same conclusion: this was a global climatic disaster.

The falling Nile led to agricultural collapse; the Old Kingdom of Egypt collapsed; central authority disintegrated. In Mesopotamia, drought and transgression superimposed; a 3.35-meter sand layer was found beneath the Sumerian city of Ur; soil salinization completely dissolved the city-state system; the Sumerian King List was interrupted here. The Harappan civilization of the Indus valley declined due to river diversion and drought, its cities abandoned. The Liangzhu civilization of the lower Yangtze suffered saltwater intrusion brought by transgression; the stratigraphy at the Yushan site records sea-level rise and severe storm disasters.

Four great civilizations met the same fate, yet their choices were entirely different. Those to the west wrote the memory of the flood into the Bible, where it became the redemptive narrative of Noah's Ark. Those to the east wrote the memory of the flood into the Shan Hai Jing, where it became the epic of Yu the Great's struggle against the waters. Theocentric civilization believes in "passively awaiting divine grace"; human-centric civilization believes in "actively conquering by human power." This dividing line carved the spiritual map of the Eurasian continent, and Sanxingdui is precisely the material projection of this dividing line in East Asia.

02 Bidirectional Transmission

The transgression of 4,200 years ago shook four great civilizations within the same time window, forcing them to move in different directions. The remnants of ancient Egypt retreated south into Nubia, contracting upstream along the Nile to the highlands; the abnormal Nile levels and agricultural collapse caused by the transgression had already disintegrated the Old Kingdom's central authority. Part of the Harappan population fled northwest, crossing the Pamirs into northwestern China; part migrated southeast toward the lower reaches; the river diversion and drought caused by the transgression left their cities abandoned. The Liangzhu civilization traveled upstream along the Yangtze, through Jing-Chu, into the Sichuan Basin; saltwater intrusion directly destroyed its water-town homeland. The Sumerian civilization was no exception: it had crossed the transgression of 5,400 years ago but did not "escape" the one of 4,200 years ago, and began to return east along the Southern Qiang Route, from Mesopotamia toward the Sichuan Basin.

In the course of the four civilizations' displacement, the paths of Sumerian and Liangzhu civilizations formed the most complete convergence at the eastern end of the Great Corridor. This was not the flight of scattered populations but the systematic transfer of two advanced civilizational subjects. The Sumerians traveled north along the Southern Qiang Route, carrying a complete theocratic operating system centered on the "Triadic Star Deities," along with finished bronze vessels for worship; this system included the divine genealogy, sacrificial rituals, heaven-communicating icons, and bronze-casting knowledge. The Liangzhu traveled upstream along the Yangtze, carrying the jade cong and jade-working system, along with an entire "human-centric order" graphic system materialized in jade cong. The book explicitly states: "In the transgression of 4,200 years ago, the Liangzhu civilization by water and the Sumerian civilization by mountain had a wondrous meeting in the Sichuan Basin." The Sumerians traveled through the Indus valley, Myanmar, and Yunnan, north along the deep valleys of the Hengduan Mountains—the southern mountain-circling route. The Liangzhu traveled from the Yangtze Delta through Jing-Chu to Ba-Shu, west along the Yangtze—the eastern upstream route. The two paths converged in the Sichuan Basin.

The main body of Sumerian civilization was not the only eastward-returning group; its exiles also dispersed in other directions. The main body of Liangzhu civilization likewise dispersed in multiple directions; the book records: "After 4,300 years ago, Liangzhu culture suddenly declined in the Yuhang region; divine beasts, jades, and other civilizational elements spread to various places; Liangzhu culture entered its phase of generalization." Some Liangzhu traveled south via the Gan River to the Pearl River basin, leaving sites at Shixia in Qujiang, Guangdong; some moved north, participating in the formation of Longshan and Qijia cultures. But the main forces of Sumer and Liangzhu—those carrying the complete core civilizational elements—went in the same direction: the Sichuan Basin.

The two civilizations' migration to high altitudes constituted a complete "warm-period ascent" transmission along the Great Corridor. Both paths skirted the edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, both used the natural corridors provided by the Great Corridor, and ultimately converged on the same endpoint: the Sichuan Basin.

03 The Land of Sedimentation

The main bodies of two advanced civilizations wondrously met in the Sichuan Basin, forcefully entering the ancient Ba-Shu state system.

At that time the Sichuan Basin was sparsely populated, with a limited total population. This demographic state meant the basin exerted no repelling force against incoming migrants; instead it provided ample temporary living space. Two groups of exiles entered the basin in succession, each finding a foothold on this relatively empty land—arriving in succession, adapting in succession, establishing themselves in succession. But the Sichuan Basin was not a container of infinite capacity; its terrain, ringed by mountains on four sides, made it a natural "sedimentation pool." Any civilizational factor entering the basin could not easily diffuse outward; it could only be forced to remain, sediment, and collide.

The Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau to the southwest of the basin is the first large geographic unit after the Southern Qiang Route enters China from Myanmar; its altitude descends step by step from 2,000 meters to about 500 meters at the Sichuan Basin, forming the crucial step in the Great Corridor's transition from high to low altitude. The Red River gorge is the shortest path linking the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to the South China Sea. Sea shells and ivory from the Indian Ocean and South China Sea, along with bronze finished products from Mesopotamia, all had to pass through the Great Corridor's layered transport to reach the Sichuan Basin.

The Sichuan Basin became the most distinctive node on the Great Corridor because of its position within the Nine-Palace. The Nine-Palace is the spatial-cognitive framework peculiar to Chinese civilization, an orthogonal superimposition of the Four River Basins and the Four Steps. The Sichuan Basin is the terminal node of the Southern Qiang Route, the "terminal position" at the southwestern edge of the Nine-Palace. Three civilizational routes converge within the basin: the Southern Qiang Route inputs the Sumerian theocratic system and bronze finished products from the southwest; the Yangtze waterway inputs the Liangzhu human-centric order and jade cong tradition from the southeast; the Central Plains Shu Road inputs the ritual and institutional systems of Yellow River civilization from the northeast. This makes the Sichuan Basin the only node on the Great Corridor receiving input from three directions simultaneously.

The material evidence entering the Sichuan Basin is rich and diverse. Sea shells from the Indian Ocean and South China Sea traveled north along the Southern Qiang Route into the Chengdu Plain; large quantities of sea shells were unearthed from the Sanxingdui sacrificial pits, coexisting with bronzes. The tomb of Fu Hao at Yinxu yielded thousands of sea shells, proving that cowries had risen from ornament to a measure of value, forming the earliest monetary circulation network of the Great Corridor's eastern section; the cowries at Yinxu also came from this route, showing that the trade network of the Great Corridor's eastern section had extended to the middle Yellow River by the Shang dynasty. Ivory entered from South and Southeast Asia along the Southern Qiang Route; over a hundred pieces of ivory were unearthed at Sanxingdui and Jinsha, occupying an important position in the sacrificial system. Bronze finished products were transported from Mesopotamia along the Southern Qiang Route; their lead-bearing, phosphorus-bearing, zinc-free alloy composition matches Mesopotamia exactly and does not match any known ore source within China. Jade cong traveled upstream from Liangzhu along the Yangtze into the basin; the Jinsha site yielded 27 jade cong, one of them a ten-section cong confirmed as from Liangzhu culture. The gold-foil technique of the gold staff and gold mask has no precedent in Shang China yet is common in Egypt and West Asia; its technical route entered along the Southern Qiang Route. These material evidences are not isolated objects but multiple signals superimposed on the same spatial corridor, jointly pointing to the Great Corridor as the explanatory framework.

The Sichuan Basin thus presents a seemingly contradictory duality: geographically it is relatively enclosed, ringed by mountains, so that incomers cannot easily diffuse outward; yet as a corridor it is open, with the Southern Qiang Route, the Yangtze waterway, and the Central Plains Shu Road converging here from three directions. Enclosure enables it to sediment; openness enables it to receive. Without enclosure, civilizational factors would sweep past and leave no strata; without openness, the basin would be a stagnant pool and could never grow Sanxingdui. Sanxingdui is precisely the most typical cross-section of this "enclosed sedimentation, open reception" duality and the first complete material archive of the Great Corridor at its East Asian terminus.

04 Civilizational Choice

After the Sumerians and Liangzhu each established themselves in the Sichuan Basin, the two complete civilizational systems began to come into contact within this enclosed space. This book interprets this process as a "holy war." "The great affairs of state lie in sacrifice and war." The conquest of states with different totems and different music is holy war.

The book cites the Discourses of the States, Zhou Discourses to corroborate the ferocity of this holy war: "When the region does not accord with the seasons, they do not share the deities, and they despise the five principles; therefore men raze their ancestral temples and burn their ritual vessels." The victors must not only defeat their opponents but destroy their ancestral temples, burn their sacrificial vessels, and completely erase the imprint of their theocratic system from the land. The Sanxingdui sacrificial pits are precisely the site of this holy war. Those bronze deities and gold staffs—smashed, burned, hastily buried—are the "alien" objects the victors did not need to smelt. Smashing the deities, breaking the sacred tree, burning the ritual implements, and burying in layers—these operations themselves constitute a complete "de-deification" ritual. Judging from the degree of breakage, the blows concentrated on the faces of the deities, the branches of the sacred tree, and the ornamental portions of the gold staffs; the attack was targeted, aimed at the visual symbolic system of the "Triadic Star Deities." This was not random destruction but a systematic theocratic eradication campaign.

The deep driving force of this "holy war" was not hatred but climate and space. The transgression of Mesopotamia and the Yangtze Delta, within the same time window, pushed two groups carrying different civilizational genes into the same enclosed space. Space was insufficient to accommodate the coexistence of two civilizations; the belief systems of theocentric and human-centric civilizations were fundamentally irreconcilable. The Sumerian theocratic civilization required a "vertical transmission" social structure: divine will was transmitted downward through priests, and the populace could only passively accept, forming the hierarchical chain of "priest—god-king—people." The Liangzhu human-centric civilization developed a "horizontal weaving" social structure: each family organized itself through clan ethics, without need for specialized clergy, forming the lateral network of "family—lineage—state." The two structures could not be compatible within the enclosed basin; collision was inevitable.

The Liangzhu ultimately became the masters of the basin. The Liangzhu civilization had cultivated a water-town homeland in the lower Yangtze for over a thousand years, based on rice agriculture and organized water management, farming, and sacrifice through a clearly stratified social structure; it had already accumulated rich experience in large-scale water conservancy. After entering the Sichuan Basin, facing frequent floods from the Min and Tuo rivers, the Liangzhu applied their water-management experience to the new environment. Although the Sumerians brought a theocratic system and bronze finished products, in a basin ravaged by floods, a belief system that waited for divine salvation proved powerless before real crisis. The competition between the two civilizations was ultimately decided by the criterion of "who could make this land habitable."

The succession of Duyu and Kaiming (Bieling) in the ancient Shu five-king lineage is precisely the personified expression of this historical process. Duyu moved from hunting and fishing to agriculture, establishing the prototype of human-centric order but unable to fully solve the floods. Bieling, said to be from Jing-Chu and a Liangzhu descendant, replaced Duyu through his achievement in water management, working with the terrain to completely tame the waters of the Chengdu Plain. The book explicitly states: "The Kaiming dynasty should be the second season of Liangzhu culture, achieving the perfect connection from Yuhang to Tianfu, from the Third Step to the Second Step." Duyu's yielding to Kaiming was not a dynastic succession but the final replacement of the basin's theocentric civilization by Liangzhu human-centric civilization.

Since Liangzhu completed its replacement of the Ba-Shu kingdom, it would not leave Sumer behind. The strata of the Sanxingdui sacrificial pits formed a material superimposition: the bottom layer is ash, fragments, and large quantities of ivory; the upper layer is the soil filled in after Sumerian-style deities and gold staffs were smashed; the topmost layer is the ash of burning and the sealing earth of burial. The Sanxingdui sacrificial pits are not a tomb but a "geological cross-section of civilizational choice." The human-centric victory was not achieved through intellectual debate but through water-management practice and stratigraphic superimposition. The smashed bronze deities were not melted down but buried in disorder; although the victors destroyed the theocratic system, they in fact preserved it in another way, burying the "alien" deities in the earth and transforming them from "living gods" into "historical objects."

05 The Bronze Code

To interpret Sanxingdui requires five questions: Where did the ore come from? Finished product or raw material? Where did the technology come from? What clothing was worn? Could the population support it? The five questions interlock, each pointing in the same direction: the Great Corridor.

First, the source of ore. Sanxingdui bronze contains lead and phosphorus but no zinc, entirely consistent with Mesopotamian and Greek bronze, and entirely different from Central Plains Yin-Shang bronze, which has trace zinc and lead but no phosphorus. The book explicitly states: "Sanxingdui bronze is consistent with the bronze of Mesopotamia and Greece, and different from Central Plains Yin-Shang bronze; it comes from the ore deposits of the present Afghan plateau, not from the present Chinese mainland." Research by the Key Laboratory of Mineralogy and Metallogeny of the Chinese Academy of Sciences further confirms that Sanxingdui bronze contains highly radiogenic lead isotopes, and no such highly radiogenic lead ore exists within present-day China. The chemical fingerprint of the ore points to the Afghan plateau, the casting site to Mesopotamia, and the finished products then entered the Chengdu Plain along the Southern Qiang Route. This chain of evidence points in only one direction.

Second, the source of finished products. Once the ore source is confirmed, a question from logistics economics follows. From Afghanistan to Chengdu is 6,000 to 8,000 kilometers one way; at the ancient rate of 30 kilometers per day, one way takes half a year to a year, and a round trip plus stops, trade, and migration often takes two to three years or longer. The cost of transporting raw materials is unimaginably high. Mining the ore in Afghanistan, smelting and casting it in Mesopotamia, then transporting the finished products east along the Southern Qiang Route—this is the reasonable logistics chain. This judgment explains why Sanxingdui had no bronze workshop or molds: not because they could not cast, but because there was simply no need to cast locally. It also explains why the craftsmanship level surpasses the Central Plains by over a thousand years: not the result of local gradual evolution but the direct input of finished products from the mature phase of Sumerian civilization. As for the bronze deities in the sacrificial pits being smashed rather than melted, it was not because they could not be melted, but because the victors completed the de-deification ritual by smashing, with no need to smelt. If they had been locally cast, smashing and burying would be a civil strife; but they were sacred objects transported from thousands of kilometers away, and smashing and burying them was a true civilizational confrontation.

Third, the source of technology. The gold-working technique is the same. The gold staff was made by hammering gold bars into gold foil and wrapping it around a wooden staff—a form with no precedent in Shang China yet common in Egypt and West Asia. The gold-foil appliqué technique of the gold mask has no lineage of technical transmission within China yet has a complete craft genealogy in Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt. Sanxingdui bronze is the technical base of "theocentric ritual implements"; Central Plains Yin-Shang bronze is the technical base of "human-centric ritual vessels." From alloy formula to vessel type and function to craft tradition, the two follow entirely different technical routes. The technical genealogy points in only one direction.

Fourth, dress form. This is the cultural fingerprint most difficult to replace. The dress of the Sanxingdui bronze standing figure is right-lapel, with the front closing to the right—different from the Central Plains Huaxia left-lapel tradition and similar to the dress features of Mesopotamian figurines. Dress is one of the cultural genes most difficult to change; unlike bronze, it cannot be recast; unlike deities, it cannot be remodeled. The direction of the lapel is the sedimented habit of daily wear, the extension of bodily memory, extremely difficult to replace in migration. This detail of the standing figure's right lapel provides yet another independent chain of material evidence for the eastward transmission of the Sumerian theocratic system, alongside bronze composition, gold-foil technique, and object posture. The right lapel is not an isolated detail; it points to a deeper fact: what the standing figure preserves is the complete image-code of the Sumerian priestly system. Dress points in only one direction.

Fifth, population scale. At that time the Ba-Shu region had only a population of tens of thousands and the population density was extremely low.. The book points out: "Compared with the same historical period, the Ba-Shu population of tens of thousands could not support the Sanxingdui bronze sacred-tree ritual implements, entirely different from the Yin-Shang human-centric ritual vessels supported by the Central Plains' population of millions." The Sumerian "Triadic Star Deities" pantheon is one of the most complex early theological systems, with complex narratives of division, dialogue, conflict, and alliance among the three deities. To maintain this system required professional priestly schools to train personnel, regular festivals to display to the populace, and specialized workshops to cast ritual implements. This workshop system lay in Mesopotamia, not on the Chengdu Plain. This system operated in Mesopotamia for over a thousand years, with a population of hundreds of thousands, a developed city-state system, and a stable agricultural base. On the Chengdu Plain with only tens of thousands of people, the theocratic system could not reproduce itself and could only be imported wholesale from outside. Population scale points in only one direction.

Sumerian clay tablets turned to mud in East Asia, but the code system did not perish with them. Sanxingdui yielded no cuneiform clay tablets, but ancient Yi script preserves a direct relationship of origin with Sumerian cuneiform. The clay tablets decayed in the Chengdu Plain's hot, humid, and rainy climate, proving that what was transmitted was not only objects but an entire code system. The book fully discusses this: "The three types of distinctive Sanxingdui figures—the 'thousand-li-eye' mask figure, the 2.62-meter-tall 'standing figure' full-body figure, and the 'gold-faced figure' mask figure—may be the 'Triadic Star Deities' totemic figures of ancient Sumerian civilization transferred to the ancient Shu Chengdu Plain, representing 'moon,' 'sun,' and 'Venus.'" The vertical-eyed mask is identical to the Sumerian artistic emphasis on "vision communicating with the divine"; the standing figure's posture is strikingly similar to the standard gesture of Mesopotamian sacrifice holding offerings; the nine-branched layered structure of the sacred tree shares the same spatial logic as the Sumerian "Tree of Life" vertical cosmological diagram.

The ore points to Afghanistan; the transport of finished products explains the absence of workshops; the technology points to Mesopotamia; the dress points to Sumer; the population scale rules out the possibility of local production. Five lines of evidence—not one points to the Central Plains; all point to the Great Corridor. Sanxingdui's bronze is not a Ba-Shu invention but a transport of finished products completed by Sumerian civilization along the Southern Qiang Route, spanning six thousand to eight thousand kilometers. The people left, the gods left, but the bronze remained. Buried in the sacrificial pits, it was not discarded as trash but terminated, sealed, and remembered as the sacred objects of the "alien other."

06 Endlessly Continuing

After Sanxingdui was buried, the civilizational center of gravity shifted to Jinsha. The human-centric system continued; the theocentric system moved from the basin center to the periphery. Sanxingdui's objects, pantheon, and symbols did not disappear but were transmitted and transformed in different ways.

Ancient Yi documents fully explain the meaning of the Sanxingdui bronze deities; ancient Yi script has a direct relationship of origin with Sumerian cuneiform. The character "Yi" originally means bronze; Yi vessels are bronze vessels; the Yi people are the bronze people. The book explicitly states: "The two major symbolic codes of Sumerian civilization—'clay tablet' cuneiform and 'bronze' human-faced totem—turned to mud in Mesopotamia, and were transmitted in the East by the Yi people in the form of ancient Yi script and bronze culture." The Yi solar calendar and the Sanxingdui sun-shaped implements share the same cosmic timekeeping logic; Yi Torch Festival rituals preserve the spatial concept of a layered cosmos; Yi ancestor worship is isomorphic with the "heaven-communicating" function of the Sanxingdui sacred tree. These are not vague cultural similarities but concretely traceable evidence of the continuation of "civilizational genes."

The traditional villages of the Konyak people preserve cultural features similar to Sanxingdui; their migration legends explicitly record that their ancestors came from the east, moving south along the Hengduan Mountain valleys into northeastern India. They build tall wooden "Morung" towers whose structure is highly consistent with the layered cosmological diagram of the Sanxingdui bronze sacred tree; they use exaggerated columnar-eye masks in sacrificial rituals whose form is identical to the Sanxingdui vertical-eyed masks; they believe ancestral souls travel between heaven and earth via the ladder of the vertical cosmos, sharing the same spatial grammar as the Sanxingdui sacred tree's cosmological layering. Sanxingdui's objects were sealed in the sacrificial pits, but Sanxingdui's pantheon and cosmology survived in variant forms through Yi living culture and Konyak village ritual.

Civilizational transmission along the Great Corridor did not stop with the end of Sanxingdui. Daoism originated at Mount Heming in the western Sichuan Basin, fusing the ancient Shu shamanic tradition with the sacred-mountain worship of Qiang-Di culture into the earliest form of Daoism. Li Bai left the verse in "The Road to Shu Is Hard": "Cancong and Yufu, how remote their founding! Since then forty-eight thousand years, no communication with the Qin frontier"—showing that the historical narrative of the ancient Shu king lineage still persisted in the knowledge system of Tang literati. Dozens of ethnic minorities—Qiang, Yi, Dai, Bai, Naxi—have lived for generations in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and the depths of the Hengduan Mountains; their ancestors once participated in the most splendid civilizational transmission along the Great Corridor and preserved the memory of that history in living form to this day. Yeheidie'erding came from the Arab world, entered Yuan Dadu along the Silk Road, and fused Persian dome technology with Han timber-frame tradition. Ruan An came from Annam, traveled north along the Southern Qiang Route, and participated in directing the construction of the Ming Beijing Forbidden City. Three thousand years ago, the Sumerian theocratic system entered Sanxingdui along the Southern Qiang Route; three thousand years later, Persian domes and Jiaozhi construction wisdom entered Yuan Dadu and the Forbidden City along the same great corridor.

In this process, the Chinese nation played two inseparable roles: creator of civilization and guardian of civilization. Creating civilization is active endeavor; guarding civilization is work of another dimension. The Sichuan Basin, as the "civilizational sedimentation pool" on the Great Corridor, deposited and preserved layer by layer the various civilizational factors entering along the Great Corridor. The mountain peoples of the southwest preserved the genes of the Great Corridor's civilizational transmission to this day in living culture. Sanxingdui's objects sealed underground in static artifact form a peak-level human civilizational creation. From the Sanxingdui sacrificial pits to the Dunhuang Library Cave, from ancient Yi script codes to Li Bai's verses, the Chinese nation simultaneously completed both creation and guardianship, forging them into a civilizational state lasting eight thousand years.

Sanxingdui is the node on this continuous corridor that left the most complete stratigraphic cross-section because two civilizational systems were incompatible within the enclosed basin. This Great Corridor is an independent, complete, globally scaled civilizational transmission system, and Sanxingdui is precisely the oldest and most complete material witness of this system in East Asia. Chinese civilization on the Great Corridor both created its own civilizational form and guarded an irreplaceable sample of humanity's civilizational diversity. Creation and guardianship occurred simultaneously on the same land and have continued for eight thousand years.

Conclusion: Guarding Civilization

Those who carve the boat to seek the sword will never find that sword, because the boat is moving, the sword is shifting, civilization is flowing. The smashed "sword" in the Sanxingdui sacrificial pits is long since no longer in its former place. This book's closed-loop deduction: it has traveled from Mesopotamia to the Chengdu Plain, from the sacrificial pits to Jinsha, from the hands of the Sumerians into the memory of the Yi and the Konyak. Only by releasing the attachment of "this is mine" can one see the true historical thread—a Great Corridor unbroken for eight thousand years.

Sanxingdui is a civilizational heritage of the Great Corridor not only because its objects come from afar but because it completely records the full process of a civilizational transmission from "introduction" to "collision" to "selection" and "transformation." From bronze ore, sea shells, and ivory, to clay tablets, gold foil, right-lapel dress, and jade cong, and further to the living transmission of the Yi and the village rituals of the Konyak, these evidences jointly point to the Great Corridor hypothesis. Its value lies in proving that beyond the core zone of Chinese civilization there existed a civilizational transmission system connected by the Great Corridor and spanning the entire Eurasian continent.

The word "guardianship" acquires a deeper meaning in the Sanxingdui case than "preservation." Chinese civilization did not establish itself by conquering or assimilating foreign civilizations but through "sedimentation" and "containment," enabling factors of different civilizations to find their respective positions within the Nine-Palace's geographic structure, so that those civilizational samples replaced in the course of transmission would not completely disappear from history. The objects in the Sanxingdui sacrificial pits slept in the earth for three thousand years, ultimately re-presented to the world through archaeological discovery; they are no longer the remains of the "alien other" but the common witness of early human civilizational creativity. Guardianship is not control but giving every civilizational experience a chance to find its position within the Nine-Palace, a chance to become part of humanity's common memory. It is in this way that Chinese civilization became the "memory bank" of global civilization. From the Sanxingdui sacrificial pits to the Dunhuang Library Cave, from ancient Yi script codes to Li Bai's verses, this posture of guardianship has enabled Chinese civilization to maintain a special quality throughout eight thousand years of transmission history: it creates and also preserves; it selects and also remembers.

The transmission of the Great Corridor has never stopped; it merely continues to operate in different forms in different eras. What Sanxingdui guards is not the glory of any single civilization but the footprints that have traversed eight thousand years along the Great Corridor. Together these footprints constitute the complete proof of Chinese civilization as a guardian of global civilization.
