引言

Introduction

The human body is governed by temperature, humidity, and monsoon. In warm periods, human thermal comfort lies in high latitudes and high altitudes; in cold periods, it lies in low latitudes and low altitudes. A determinate correspondence exists between latitude and altitude: each degree of latitude corresponds to roughly 1°C; each 100 meters of altitude to roughly 0.6°C. Across a 15-degree latitude range and a 2,500-meter altitude range, the annual average temperature differs by roughly 15°C. Human thermal comfort is 26°C, and the range of 15°C above and below is the optimal zone for human survival. An average temperature difference of 15°C is enough to drive large-scale human migration spanning 2,000 kilometers in latitude or 2,000 meters in altitude.

The Great Corridor around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau formed precisely under this climate-driven mechanism. It is a ring-shaped corridor network encircling the Earth's highest landmass, extending over ten thousand kilometers. From the Pamirs westward, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau connects continuously with the Iranian Plateau through the Hindu Kush, and further extends to Mesopotamia via the Zagros Mountains, forming a complete plateau corridor from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to the eastern Mediterranean. The Great Corridor extends westward in three branches, linking East Asia, Central Asia, South Asia, and West Asia into a civilizational exchange system lasting thousands of years. In warm periods, populations gather toward high altitudes and high latitudes, converging on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau along the Great Corridor; in cold periods, populations disperse toward low altitudes and low latitudes, moving along the Great Corridor toward Mesopotamia, the Indian Ocean, and the South China Sea. The Great Corridor is the vertical channel of climate-driven migration and civilizational exchange, and the circumventing interface between the First and Second Steps.

The operation of the Great Corridor follows a complete causal chain. Climate provides the driving force: up the mountains in warm periods, down in cold periods, leaving populations no choice but to move. The step boundary provides spatial constraint: the Great Corridor must skirt both sides of the dividing line. River systems provide natural transmission channels, linking plateau and ocean into a complete transmission system. The Nine-Palace structure determines the mechanism of sedimentation: civilizational factors entering China must pass a triple test—geographic compatibility, cognitive encodability, and convertibility of spatial form—before they can take root. What follows unfolds along six main threads.

01 The Three Main Routes

The Great Corridor around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau consists of three main routes, its geographical boundary spans approximately 8,000 kilometers; if traced completely along ancient mountain passes, river valleys, and historic routes, the total length of the human migration loop reaches about 11,000 kilometers, which perform opposite directional functions amid alternations of cold and warmth. The three routes are functionally complementary: interruption of any one would weaken the Corridor's transmission efficiency, while their alternate use has sustained civilizational transmission for thousands of years. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, branching westward through the Pamirs, connects continuously with the Hindu Kush, the Sulaiman Range, and the Iranian Plateau, forming the natural geographic basis for the Corridor's westward extension.

The Northern Qiang Route is the northern section of the Great Corridor, running west from the northeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau along the northern foot of the Kunlun Mountains, through the Pamirs and the Wakhan Corridor into Central Asia, and further to Mesopotamia. In cold periods populations disperse from the plateau toward Central Asia and Mesopotamia; in warm periods they flow back. The oasis belt at the northern foot of the Kunlun Mountains, nourished by glacial meltwater, is the only feasible passage across the southern rim of the Tarim Basin, with a rest-stop oasis settlement every 30 to 50 kilometers. This route links East Asia and West Asia; it is the corridor by which wheat, bronze, and glass beads came east, and by which millet, silk, and papermaking went west.

The Central Qiang Route is the middle section of the Great Corridor, running west from the Qinghai Lake region through the Qaidam Basin into Ruoqiang in Xinjiang, linking the southern rim of the Tarim Basin with the Hexi Corridor. In cold periods populations disperse from the plateau toward the Tarim Basin and the Hexi Corridor; in warm periods they gather back toward the plateau. The salt marshes of the Qaidam Basin and the glacial meltwater of the Qilian Mountains alternately govern the route's passability: in cold periods, when water sources at the southern foot dry up, populations cross northward over the Qilian Mountains into the Hexi Corridor; in warm periods, when water sources at the southern foot recover, populations return to the southern side. This route links Central Asia and the Loess Plateau; it is the principal stretch of the Jade Road and an important corridor for Buddhism's eastward transmission.

The Southern Qiang Route is the southern section of the Great Corridor, running south from the Sichuan Basin along the north-south valleys of the Hengduan Mountains, through Yunnan into Myanmar and India. In cold periods populations disperse from the plateau toward the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, the Indochinese Peninsula, and the Indian Ocean; in warm periods they flow back from Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean toward the plateau. The deep valleys of the Hengduan Mountains—the Nu, Lancang, Jinsha, and Yalong rivers—form the route's natural skeleton; the terraces within the valleys provide relatively gentle footholds for migration. This route links South Asia and Southeast Asia; it is the corridor for Buddhism's northward passage and the path of rice agriculture's southward spread.

The three main routes link the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau with Mesopotamia, the Indus valley, Southeast Asia, and the Chinese hinterland into a complete civilizational transmission network. The Northern Qiang Route connects West Asia; the Central Qiang Route connects Central Asia; the Southern Qiang Route connects South and Southeast Asia.

02 Up the Mountains and Down the Mountains

Climatic alternation gives the Great Corridor's movements their basic rhythm: "up the mountains in warm periods, down in cold periods." In warm periods the high-altitude Qinghai-Tibet Plateau becomes habitable, and populations gather from the surrounding lowlands toward the plateau along the Great Corridor; in cold periods the plateau exceeds the limits of human thermal comfort, and populations disperse from the plateau toward the surrounding lowlands. This alternation of ascent and descent constitutes the core driving force of the Great Corridor's operation.

In cold-period descent, populations migrate along the Great Corridor toward low altitudes and low latitudes. Westward along the Northern Qiang Route, populations entered Central Asia and Mesopotamia. Around 4,000 to 3,000 years ago, bronze-smelting technology entered China from West Asia along the Northern Qiang Route. The Qijia culture, after adopting Western bronze-casting technology and the domestication of wheat and sheep, grew strong and returned to the Central Plains, inaugurating the Xia dynasty. The Yanghai cemetery cluster, located in the Turpan Basin on the Northern Qiang Route, yielded painted pottery, bronzes, wooden harps, and sea shells—evidence that the Northern Qiang Route was an active migration corridor during cold periods. Southward along the Southern Qiang Route, populations entered the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, the Indochinese Peninsula, and the Indian Ocean coast. Traces in the Red River valley dating to 160,000 years ago and remains in the Baishiya Karst Cave at Xiahe corroborate the cold-period route from plateau to lowland. Around 8,200 years ago, Austroasiatic-speaking peoples entered China from the south along the Southern Qiang Route and moved north step by step. The Dai people migrated from the Long Mountains at the edge of the Loess Plateau, through the Sichuan Basin and the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, into Southeast Asia—their route is precisely the full trajectory of the Southern Qiang Route. The two spatial concepts in the Dai language—"Meng" (flatland) and "Jing" (square city)—extend from the edge of the Loess Plateau all the way to Southeast Asia, showing that the spatial cognition carried by language migrated south with the people along the Southern Qiang Route and was re-encoded in new geographic environments. Each cold period carried the plateau's cultural factors to Mesopotamia, the Indus valley, and Southeast Asia.

In warm-period ascent, low-altitude regions exceed the thermal comfort zone, the high-altitude Qinghai-Tibet Plateau becomes habitable again, and populations flow back toward the plateau along the Great Corridor. Eastward along the Northern Qiang Route, the origins of the Sumerians can be traced here. The Sumerians were of the yellow race, a branch of the plateau's ancient Qiang; around 8,200 years ago they migrated west along the Northern Qiang Route into Mesopotamia. During the peak of the great warm period, 7,000 to 5,800 years ago, the zone of human thermal comfort lay between 35° and 40° north latitude, at 3,500 to 4,000 meters on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The Asian summer monsoon strengthened; East Asian temperatures were higher than today; elephants roamed the dense forests of the Central Plains; rice and millet agriculture developed rapidly; populations gathered toward the plateau along the Great Corridor. Each warm period carried the lowlands' agricultural techniques and cultural factors back to the plateau.

Ascent and descent constitute a complete cycle. Cold-period descent is disaster-driven: severe cold forces populations to disperse. Warm-period ascent is dividend-driven: warmth makes high altitudes habitable again. Disaster and dividend alternate; cold periods spread plateau civilization to the lowlands, warm periods gather lowland civilization onto the plateau—and civilization completes its reconfiguration along the Great Corridor.

03 Circling the Mountains and Transmission

"Circling the mountains" is a summary expression for the process of migration and survival competition around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The movement of populations along the Great Corridor is not a uniform wandering but a process of pausing, gathering, and settling at specific nodes, then setting out again. Those who complete the full mountain-circling have traversed the entire Great Corridor; they are not merely travelers through space but carriers, fusers, and re-creators of civilization.

The subjects of mountain-circling are peoples themselves. Over nearly ten thousand years, those who truly completed full mountain-circling competition were the ancient Qiang, the Scythians, the Persians, and the Mongols. The ancient Qiang were an indigenous people of the eastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau; they gathered at high altitudes during the great warm period and migrated west along the Great Corridor during cold periods. As noted earlier, one branch migrated west along the Northern Qiang Route into Mesopotamia around 8,200 years ago, creating Sumerian civilization and transforming the plateau's sacred-mountain worship into the ziggurat tradition of Mesopotamia. After Sumerian civilization disappeared, some Sumerians returned east along the Southern Qiang Route into the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau; their cultural genes merged into the Yi people, and a direct relationship of origin exists between ancient Yi script and Sumerian cuneiform. The Scythians set out from the South Russian steppe, came south through the Altai Mountains to the Turpan Basin, then spread along the Great Corridor throughout Central Asia; their steppe animal motifs, nomadic techniques, and dress culture profoundly influenced the entire Eurasian steppe belt. The Persians set out from the Iranian Plateau and built an empire spanning Asia and Europe along the Great Corridor, spreading the commandery-county system, standardized silver coinage, and the post-road system from the Iranian Plateau to the eastern end of the Great Corridor—profoundly influencing the formation of the Qin-Han commandery-county system. The Mongols completed the last large-scale mountain-circling along the Great Corridor in the 13th century, setting out from the Mongolian Plateau on a westward campaign along the Northern Qiang Route, building an empire spanning Asia and Europe, and transmitting Chinese institutions, astronomical calendars, and medical knowledge to West Asia and Europe. Babur, descendant of Timur, moved south along the Southern Qiang Route to establish the Mughal dynasty; "Mughal" is itself a phonetic transformation of "Mongol," fusing Islamic, Hindu, and Persian civilizations into one. By contrast, the Aryans, unable to cross or skirt the Pamirs, halted in northwestern South Asia and did not complete the full mountain-circling—proof by counterexample of its difficulty. Only those who complete the full circuit can truly grasp the distribution of resources and timing of passage along the Great Corridor.

The stopping nodes along the mountain-circling route are distributed throughout the entire Great Corridor. In the western section, Mesopotamia was the earliest gathering place for cold-period descent populations; here the Sumerians built ziggurats and pyramids whose meaning is "mountain," suggesting their civilizational origin on the plateau. Kashmir lies at the western end of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, south of the Pamirs, and at the northern foot of the western Himalayas. It is a necessary passage on the northern stretch of the Southern Qiang Route, connecting the three great plates of Central Asia, South Asia, and East Asia; it is both a node on Buddhism's northward passage and a frontier zone of contact between Indo-European and Tibeto-Burman language families. The Iranian Plateau sits between Central Asia, South Asia, and West Asia; here the Persian Empire established a standardized monetary system and commandery-county institutions. From the Sumerian period to the Persian Empire, the Iranian Plateau was always the most stable civilizational filter of the Great Corridor's western section. The Ganges basin is an important node at the southern end of the Southern Qiang Route; from here Buddhism moved north along the Great Corridor, and sugar-making technology entered China and, after Chinese improvement, was returned to India.

In the eastern section of the Great Corridor, five nodes most closely linked to China unfold in sequence. The Pamirs are the western entrance to China's Great Corridor; here the three main routes—Northern, Central, and Southern Qiang—diverge. Civilizational factors entering China—whether bronze technology, wheat, glass beads, or Buddhism, Islam, and Persian silver—are filtered, combined, and transformed at the Pamirs, then continue eastward in new forms. The Tarim Basin lies at the junction of the Northern and Central Qiang Routes; its oasis chain links into a single line during warm periods and breaks during cold periods, able to serve only as a passage and unable to sediment into a sustained civilizational center. The Loess Plateau occupies the pivotal position within the Nine-Palace; it is the core region where China receives foreign factors and carries out localized transformation. The Qijia culture's localization of bronze technology at the western edge of the Loess Plateau is precisely an early sample of the Nine-Palace's pivotal "receive-and-transform" function. The Sichuan Basin is the terminal node of the Southern Qiang Route; three civilizational lines converge here, and the Sanxingdui site witnessed the incompatible conflict between the Sumerian pantheon and the basin's human-centric tradition. The Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau bears the triple characteristics of multi-level terrain, biodiversity, and cultural pluralism; it is the region of China with the most complex ethnic composition, where peoples of the Tibeto-Burman, Miao-Yao, and Zhuang-Dong language families converge. These nodes are like beads on the mountain-circling path, strung by the three main routes into a complete necklace.

04 Plateau and Ocean

The transmission of the Great Corridor around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau depends not only on the three main overland routes but also on the river systems originating from the plateau. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is the "Water Tower of Asia"; its glacial meltwater forms a river network flowing to different oceans. These rivers are themselves natural transmission channels, linking the plateau with the Mediterranean, the Persian Gulf, the Indian Ocean, the South China Sea, the East China Sea, and the Pacific into a complete transmission system. The passable routes of human migration in the circum-plateau region—whether ascent, descent, or mountain-circling—are governed by river orientations and terrace distributions.

The many rivers originating from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau radiate in different directions. Westward, the Tarim River nourishes the oases along the Northern Qiang Route; the Amu Darya and Syr Darya connect the Caspian and Black Seas through the Central Asian steppe. Southward, the Indus, Ganges, Yarlung Tsangpo, Irrawaddy, Salween, Mekong, and Red rivers constitute the natural parallel channels of the Southern Qiang Route. The Red River gorge is especially critical: it is the shortest path linking the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to the South China Sea. The Red River rises in Dali, Yunnan, flows south through Yuanjiang and Vietnam, and empties into the Gulf of Tonkin; it is the main channel of the Southern Qiang Route's southern section. As noted earlier, the Dai people's southward migration followed precisely this Red River valley route into Southeast Asia. Eastward, the Yangtze, Yellow, and Xiliao rivers connect the plateau with the East China Sea, the Bohai Sea, and the Yellow Sea. The Yangtze rushes down from the eastern foot of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, through the Sichuan Basin, the land of Jing-Chu, and the water towns of Wu-Yue, finally emptying into the East China Sea—the aorta connecting plateau civilization and maritime civilization. The Yellow River sets out from the northeastern edge of the plateau, through the Loess Plateau and the North China Plain, emptying into the Bohai Sea—the lifeline of Central Plains civilization. The alluvial fans and deltas of these rivers—the Yangtze Delta, the Yellow River Delta, the Pearl River Delta—became fertile ground for civilizational sedimentation and the starting points of coastal corridors. Northward, the Northern Qiang Route connects with the river systems of the Central Asian steppe, indirectly linking the plateau with the Aral, Caspian, and Black Seas, ultimately flowing into the Mediterranean civilizational sphere.

These rivers carry not only water and sediment but peoples, crops, artifacts, and ideas. In cold periods populations move downstream, dispersing from plateau toward ocean; in warm periods populations move upstream, gathering from ocean toward plateau. River terraces are natural migration corridors; alluvial fans are natural gathering places; river mouths are natural civilizational junctions. The river system constitutes the dynamic link between plateau and ocean: peoples travel along rivers from the plateau's interior to the sea and return from the sea to the plateau. Around 7,000 to 6,000 years ago, rice agriculture spread from the lower Yangtze coastal region via the Pearl River and Red River lines to Taiwan, the Philippines, and the Southeast Asian islands—precisely the combined result of river transmission and maritime connection. The synergy of mountain and sea is the essential characteristic of this transmission system. The plateau is an extreme high-altitude environment; the ocean is an extreme low-altitude environment; and rivers are precisely the channels linking these two extremes. The Great Corridor is the overland passage along the plateau's edge; rivers are the longitudinal channels connecting plateau and ocean. The two channel systems overlap and intersect, forming a complete transmission network. The deep valleys of the Hengduan Mountains connect the plateau with Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean; the Yangtze system connects the plateau with the East China Sea; the Red River system connects the plateau with the South China Sea. Every river is a channel of dialogue between plateau and ocean—accumulating toward the mountains, settling toward the sea—bearing bidirectional civilizational flow. Thereby the Great Corridor and the Great Pacific Coastal Corridor form a structural connection through the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau's river systems. The Great Corridor completes vertical transmission between high and low altitudes in the north-south direction; the basin lines complete horizontal transmission between inland and coast in the east-west direction; the coastline completes longitudinal transmission between coast and open sea in the north-south direction. The three channel layers each perform their function, achieving full through-connection of Eurasian civilizational transmission from the Pamirs to the Pacific coast.

05 Exchange and Sedimentation

Mountain-circling and rivers together constitute the transmission system of the Great Corridor; what this system carries are four interrelated forms of civilizational transmission: migration, material exchange, technological generalization, and cultural diffusion. They do not occur in sequence but operate simultaneously, mutually superimposed, so that each climatic alternation triggers a reconfiguration of civilization.

Migration is the most holistic form of transmission. Each alternation of cold and warmth triggers large-scale population movement. The transgression around 4,200 years ago triggered the westward migration of Liangzhu culture populations along the Yangtze basin, through Jing-Chu into Ba-Shu. The Mongols of the Yuan dynasty campaigned west along the Northern Qiang Route; Babur, descendant of Timur, moved south along the Southern Qiang Route to establish the Mughal dynasty. Migration is not merely physical displacement but the holistic movement of social structures, behavioral modes, kinship relations, and linguistic customs. Every large-scale migration is a re-rooting of civilization.

Material exchange is the most basic form of transmission. Wheat and barley from West Asia entered China along the Northern Qiang Route; millet and rice from China traveled south along the Southern Qiang Route to South Asia; the potato and maize entered Asia via the Great Corridor. Bronzes, silk, porcelain, glass beads, and sea shells became the most frequently circulating objects along the Great Corridor.

The Yanghai cemetery cluster is a typical sample of this material circulation network. Silk textiles from the Central Plains and glass beads from the Mediterranean appear together in its tombs, showing that material circulation along the Northern Qiang Route had already achieved cross-cultural connection spanning thousands of kilometers. The same tombs also yielded the earliest known trousers in China—about 3,000 years old, with two legs separately sewn and a drawstring at the waist and crotch; their tailoring is highly consistent with the dress features of Central Asian steppe nomads, indicating that trouser technology entered China from the Eurasian steppe along the Northern Qiang Route. They also yielded the earliest known noodles in China—a bowl of millet noodles completely preserved in an inverted pottery bowl—showing that wheat crops introduced from West Asia and native millet agriculture achieved convergence and fusion along the Great Corridor. In addition, wooden wind instruments similar in form to the later Qiang flute and hujia were unearthed, carried east with nomadic peoples along the Northern Qiang Route and becoming one of the early forms of Chinese wind instruments; and chariot remains, proving that chariot technology entered China from Central Asia along the Northern Qiang Route.

Extending further from the Yanghai artifacts, the monetary system along the Great Corridor also presents a clear line of evolution. In the early material exchange of the Great Corridor, cowrie shells were the most common equivalent. Sea cowries from the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and South China Sea were transported to inland regions far from the coast, becoming the prototype of the monetary system. During the Xia-Shang period, cowrie burial goods appeared in large numbers in tombs of the Central Plains; the tomb of Fu Hao at Yinxu yielded thousands of sea cowries, indicating that cowries had transcended mere ornament to become a measure of value. These cowries traveled north along the Southern Qiang Route, through the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and the Sichuan Basin, then via the Yangtze waterway or the Central Qiang Route into the Central Plains, forming the earliest monetary circulation network of the Great Corridor's eastern section. With the maturation of smelting technology, Persian silver coins became the hard currency with the widest circulation along the Great Corridor. Persian silver coins entered Central Asia via the Northern Qiang Route, then the Hexi Corridor and the Central Plains via the Central Qiang Route; their circulation covered almost the entire Great Corridor, making them the most effective value medium linking West Asia, Central Asia, and western China. Ivory was the most symbolically significant luxury material along the Great Corridor; the large quantities of ivory unearthed at Sanxingdui and Jinsha—over a hundred pieces in total—prove that the Southern Qiang Route was once the main channel for large-scale ivory transfer. Material exchange along the Great Corridor was often accomplished through multi-level transit: a single Persian silver coin might pass through the hands of Sogdian, Khotan, Dunhuang, and Chang'an merchants before finally reaching Luoyang.

Technological generalization is the most transformative form of transmission. The movement of technology is more abstract than material objects, more concrete than spirit. Bronze-smelting technology entered along the Northern Qiang Route and, after localization by the Qijia culture, spread east to the Central Plains—an early case of "broad transmission and transformation." Sugar-making technology entered from India; China absorbed it, improved it into white-sugar manufacture, and returned it to India—precisely the cycle recorded by Ji Xianlin in his History of Sugar. Papermaking, printing, gunpowder, and the compass traveled west along the Great Corridor, changing the course of European civilization. The characteristic of technological generalization is "broad transmission and transformation": a technology is continuously modified, iterated, and upgraded in the course of transmission, each transfer accompanied by adaptive adjustment.

Cultural diffusion is the deepest and most enduring form of transmission. Religion, belief, cosmology, and modes of thought spread along the Great Corridor. The Great Corridor strings together nearly all major religious regions of the Eurasian continent: Bon originated in the plateau's interior; Buddhism moved north from India along the Southern Qiang Route; Islam spread east along the Northern Qiang Route; Christianity also entered China from West Asia along the Great Corridor. The formation of Tibetan Buddhism is a typical case. Bon had already formed a complete religious system during the Zhangzhung kingdom; after Buddhism entered the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau from India along the Southern Qiang Route, it met Bon in Zhangzhung and Tubo. During the Tubo dynasty, Buddhism and Bon underwent long conflict and fusion, ultimately forming Tibetan Buddhism, integrating Bon ritual and sacred-mountain worship with Buddhist doctrine and practice. Thereafter, Tibetan Buddhism spread to the Mongolian Plateau along the Northern Qiang Route, to the southern foot of the Himalayas along the Southern Qiang Route, and to the Hexi Corridor and the Central Plains along the Central Qiang Route, completing the full cycle from "introduction" to "fusion" to "re-export."

Migration, material exchange, technological generalization, and cultural diffusion together constitute a complete civilizational transmission system. Migration provides the carrier; material exchange provides the physical objects; technological generalization provides the tools; cultural diffusion provides the direction. The four mutually superimpose and reinforce, enabling each climatic alternation along the Great Corridor to trigger a reconfiguration of civilization. But transmission does not equal acceptance. All incoming civilizational factors must undergo sedimentation before becoming part of civilizational accumulation. And the mechanism of sedimentation is determined precisely by the spatial structure of the Nine-Palace.

The sedimentation mechanism of the Nine-Palace has three layers. The first is geographic compatibility: incoming factors must adapt to the step differentials and basin distributions within the Nine-Palace. The second is cognitive encodability: incoming factors must be re-encoded by the Nine-Palace's matrix thinking and incorporated into the framework of the Three Principles—Heaven, Earth, and Human. The third is the convertibility of spatial form: incoming factors must be accommodated by the Nine-Palace's spatial forms, finding corresponding positions within the grids of "well," "cross," and "Nine-Palace." Factors compatible with the Nine-Palace structure are integrated and continue; those incompatible are marginalized or eliminated, ultimately re-encoded by the Nine-Palace to become part of Chinese civilization.

06 China on the Great Corridor

China at the eastern end of the Great Corridor is not a passive recipient of the Corridor but the only link in the entire transmission system capable of completing the full closed loop of "introduction, sedimentation, fusion, and re-export."

China's unique position lies precisely at the intersection of two great rings. The Great Corridor is the "mountain ring," skirting the edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, completing vertical transmission between high and low altitudes, and connecting the multiple civilizations of the Eurasian hinterland. The Great Pacific Coastal Corridor is the "sea ring," extending longitudinally along the western Pacific coast, completing horizontal transmission between coast and open sea, and linking Japan, the Korean Peninsula, and the Southeast Asian archipelago. The two rings form a structural connection through the river systems originating from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, making China their point of intersection. Inland civilization brought by the Great Corridor and maritime civilization brought by the coastline converge, collide, and sediment here, then re-enter the Great Corridor and the coastline in Sinicized form, continuing to spread westward and seaward.

China functions as a converter within this transmission system. Incoming civilizational factors undergo Nine-Palace sedimentation and re-encoding here, then are re-exported in new forms. Yeheidie'erding and Ruan An: one a Persian architect who brought dome structures to Yuan Dadu; the other a Han descendant who had migrated to Vietnam along the Southern Qiang Route and returned to China to participate in the planning and construction of Beijing. Their fates epitomize the bidirectional flow of civilization along the Great Corridor. From the Sumerian triadic star deities to the Liangzhu jade cong, from the Persian commandery-county system to the Sogdian trade network, from Yeheidie'erding's dome to Ruan An's square city—they all entered China from the Great Corridor, were re-encoded by the Nine-Palace, and became part of Chinese civilization. Thereafter, the sedimented and fused achievements were re-exported along the Great Corridor in "Sinicized" form. Introduction and export alternate; sedimentation and diffusion mutually fulfill.

China on the Great Corridor is therefore both the creator of Chinese civilization and a guardian of global civilization. It created its own civilizational form and also safeguarded an irreplaceable sample of humanity's civilizational diversity. Over eight thousand years, every introduction has been accompanied by transformation, every transformation produced new forms, and new forms continued to spread along the Great Corridor. This process has never been interrupted, making the Great Corridor not only a channel of migration but a spatial carrier of continuous material, technological, and spiritual convergence and transformation. China on the Great Corridor has always unfolded around the core proposition of "Heaven, Earth, mountains, seas, person, person": Heaven divides into sun and moon to enact the Yi; Earth divides into mountains and seas to form the Jing; Human divides into person and person to return to benevolence. Heavenly timing, earthly advantage, human harmony—the three cycle back and forth, mutually verifying, sedimenting into a certainty deep in the blood. Whatever the cold or warmth of climate, whatever the advance or retreat of geography, whatever the rise or fall of order, life always finds a way to find its place between Heaven and Earth.

Without the Nine-Palace, introduction could not sediment, sedimentation could not fuse, and fusion could not re-export. This is precisely the spatial meaning of "dwelling in the center of the world" (zhai zi Zhongguo). In keeping the Nine-Palace, China keeps the only position on the Great Corridor capable of completing the full closed loop. Climate-driven dividends and disasters propagate alternately along the Great Corridor, and China, in each propagation, completes the transformation from "foreign" to "internalized," allowing the seeds of civilization to take root, sprout, and endure without end on this land.

结语

Conclusion

The Great Corridor around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is a climate-driven channel of human migration and civilizational exchange. The alternation of “up the mountains in warm periods, down in cold periods” has completed one vertical cyclical return after another on the Eurasian continent. The Great Corridor is not a fixed road but the trace of populations migrating between the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the surrounding lowlands amid alternations of cold and warmth—and the thread of civilizational sedimentation.

To understand the Great Corridor requires examining it along a complete causal chain. Driving force, constraint, channel, and sedimentation are all indispensable, together constituting the complete closed loop of the Great Corridor in its East Asian section from “introduction” to “internalization.”

Chinese civilization endures because it lies at the eastern end of this climate-driven Great Corridor and possesses the Nine-Palace—a unique spatial structure—as its sedimentation apparatus. It can receive civilizational factors released from high altitudes in cold periods, output its own civilizational achievements to high altitudes in warm periods, and, in each cycle of receiving and outputting, internalize external influences into its own civilization through Nine-Palace transformation. This capacity to continually rebuild itself in each cyclical return is the underlying secret of Chinese civilization’s survival at the ten-thousand-year scale. It does not pursue unchanging eternity but maintains a way of responding to change amid change, sedimenting the experience of each response into part of civilizational accumulation. Every introduction along the Great Corridor is a test; every sedimentation is a confirmation. After ten thousand years of testing and confirmation, what has sedimented is not only knowledge and technology but a certainty deeply rooted in land and blood: however Heaven and Earth may change, life always finds a way to find its place.

Dwell in the center of the world, and life endures without end. The Great Corridor around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is the civilizational migration channel behind the two words zhai zi—one of alternating warmth and cold, of ascent and descent. And the Nine-Palace with its two rings of mountain and sea is the spatial foundation that enables every introduction along this channel to sediment into civilizational accumulation. Together they constitute a civilizational resilience rooted in the earth, responsive to Heaven’s timing, and sedimented in the human heart—enabling Chinese civilization to retain, at the ten-thousand-year scale, the capacity to begin anew.
