引言
Introduction
In the grand narrative of Xuanhui: A Philosophy of Space and Its Planning Practice, the Loess Plateau occupies an exceptional position. It is neither the origin nor the endpoint of civilization but a pivot: cultures from all directions converge, collide, and fuse here, and it is here that the earliest form of Chinese civilization was forged. From the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors to the Three Dynasties and Nine Reigns, from the civilizational accumulation of warm periods to the stone-city defense of cold periods, this land bears the most complete and profound historical memory of Chinese civilization on the Second Step. Among all geographic units of the Chinese land, the Loess Plateau preserves the most complete sequence of human civilizational evolution—from Xihoudu in the Paleolithic, to Dadiwan and Yangshao in the Neolithic, from Taosi and Shimao in the Longshan era, to Erlitou and Yinxu in the Bronze Age, and on to Qin-Han, Sui-Tang, Song-Yuan, and Ming-Qing. Its cultural continuity has never been interrupted; the completeness of its sequence is rare in the world.
Academician An Zhisheng, through half a century of research, has read the code of climatic “cyclical return” from the strata of the Loess Plateau. The alternating advance and retreat of the northwest wind and the southeast monsoon, the layer upon layer of loess and paleosol—they record the grand rhythm of cold and warmth over millions of years. This land is itself an unfinished book.
To understand the Loess Plateau is to understand how Chinese civilization, through ceaseless “cyclical return” and “self-consistency,” moved from diversity to unity, from the Second Step to the whole of the East Asian continent.
01 The Hinterland of the Second Step
Within the framework of the “Heaven-Earth matrix,” the Loess Plateau lies in the hinterland of China’s Second Step, the core pivot of the Nine-Palace geographic structure. It covers the Longdong Plateau, the Northern Shaanxi Plateau, the Guanzhong Basin, and the valleys of southwestern Shanxi—vast in area and diverse in terrain. The Yellow River line at roughly 35° north latitude is precisely the “most comfortable zone for humanity” that the book repeatedly demonstrates. Climatically, cold and warmth here vary relatively gently—neither as frigid as the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, nor as exposed to transgression as the coastal lowlands. Geographically, it borders the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to the west, the Mongolian Plateau to the north, and the North China Plain to the east, with the Yellow River running through it—a strategic pivot between the First and Third Steps. It is also the eastern convergence point of the Great Corridor around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau: the three main lines of the Northern, Central, and Southern Qiang Routes diverge or converge here, making the Loess Plateau a converter through which civilizational factors from all directions pass from “introduction” to “internalization.”
In the “Heaven-Earth matrix,” the Loess Plateau lies precisely where the four river basin lines and the four step lines intersect. The east-west Yellow River line runs through its hinterland; the Xiliao-Tarim line lies to its north; the Yangtze line to its south; the Pearl River line connects to it through the southwestern and coastal routes. Among the four north-south step lines, the Second Step line runs straight through the Loess Plateau, the Third Step line lies at its eastern edge, the First Step line at its western side. This “central” position allows the Loess Plateau to receive civilizational input from east, south, west, and north at once. When warm periods arrive, civilizational factors from the south and east travel upstream along the basin lines and gather here; when cold periods descend, nomadic forces from the north and west move south along the step lines and collide with agrarian civilization here. Every convergence and collision leaves a new cultural layer on the Loess Plateau. The Guanzhong Basin, the most essential part of the Loess Plateau, with the flat and well-watered Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain, was called by the Rites of Zhou the “finest fertile land under heaven.” It is the only geographic unit in the core zone of Chinese civilization that simultaneously possesses the four conditions of centrality, elevation, fertility, and four-side enclosure.
The book proposes that between 25° and 40° north latitude lies a “relatively stable 15-degree zone of human activity.” The Loess Plateau sits precisely between 30° and 35° north latitude, at 1,000 to 1,500 meters above sea level—the “zone of greatest human comfort and the longest axis of human survival.” During the peak of the great warm period, 8,200 to 5,400 years ago, the annual average temperature here was 2–3°C higher than today, with one-third more precipitation. The mild climate produced vast fertile fields and provided a rich material foundation for the gestation of civilization.
The loess deposit itself shaped the uniqueness of this land. Loess particles are fine and porous, with vertical jointing; even under sparse rainfall, the soil retains some moisture—an exceptional condition for early agriculture. Loess is also loose and easy to dig. The ancestors could excavate cave dwellings and build semi-subterranean houses on the loess tablelands, forming settlements. This material foundation of “earth giving birth to all things” made the Loess Plateau the earliest homeland of Chinese civilization.
Generation after generation, the ancestors migrated west and north in warm periods and retreated southeast to the low-altitude plains in cold periods. This capacity for “cyclical return” meant that civilization did not have to absorb the impact of a single climatic condition all at once. It is not a margin but a center; not a corridor but a furnace.
02 Loess and Monsoon
The strata of the Loess Plateau are themselves a silent history book. Academician An Zhisheng and his team, through more than half a century of research, have unlocked its core code.
In the 1960s, An Zhisheng took up the academic tradition of Chinese loess research, fixing his gaze on the Loess Plateau—seemingly barren, yet endlessly mysterious. He realized that to understand the laws of climatic change, time and chronology were crucial; without precise chronological coordinates, research would lose its direction. It was this persistent pursuit of the “geological clock” that ultimately gave rise to the theory of “Three Cyclical Returns of East Asian Monsoon Change.”
In the early 1990s, An Zhisheng was the first to propose the idea that the Chinese loess-paleosol sequence records the history of East Asian winter and summer monsoon climatic change, and went on to formulate the “monsoon control theory of East Asian environmental change.” The theory solved the mystery of the loess-paleosol sequence: loess represents dry-cold periods dominated by the winter monsoon, paleosol represents warm-humid periods dominated by the summer monsoon, and the two alternate to constitute millions of years of climatic cyclical return. The alternating advance and retreat of the northwest wind and the southeast monsoon is precisely the physical manifestation of “cyclical return” on East Asian soil. Each layer of loess is dust carried by the winter monsoon from the northwestern deserts; each layer of paleosol is the trace of vegetation under the warm-humid climate brought by the summer monsoon. An Zhisheng and his team successfully correlated Chinese loess with deep-sea sediment sequences, reconstructed the climatic history of the Loess Plateau, and established sequences of Chinese paleoenvironmental change for the last 2.4 million, 130,000, and 20,000 years.
The Luochuan loess section is a typical representative of this sequence. More than 130 meters of loess deposit record dozens of cold-warm alternations since the Quaternary. Loess and paleosol alternate on the section, clearly stratified, like pages of Earth’s diary turned open, each layer carrying environmental information—paleontological fossils, sporopollen assemblages, magnetic susceptibility changes. In the loess-paleosol sequence at Luochuan, the magnetic susceptibility curve records the history of climatic change over the last 2.5 million years, and it can be precisely correlated with deep-sea climatic records—confirming the reliability of loess deposits as records of global climatic change. It was through decades of meticulous research on the Luochuan section that An Zhisheng’s team established Chinese loess as a “standard stratigraphic” reference in global climate research.
An Zhisheng broke through the classic global glacial-interglacial theory and was the first to systematically propose the monsoon control doctrine of East Asian environmental change, revealing how hemispheric ice volume changes affect the Asian monsoon and how monsoon and westerly climates relate at glacial cyclical-return and millennial scales. Through Chinese loess research, Chinese loess has become one of the three pillars of global climatic change research, alongside deep-sea sediments and polar ice cores. In 2023, the team published a paper in Science reporting key evidence from loess sequences that the global climatic cycle shifted from 40,000 to 100,000 years around 1.2 million years ago—the first breakthrough by Chinese scientists in this field to gain international recognition.
An Zhisheng often says: “Every grain of loess is a diary written by the Earth; our task is to read the climatic code within these diaries.” During the post-Common Era Little Ice Age, loess even crossed the Taiwan Strait and settled on the bottom of Daguihu Lake. Every alternation of cold and warmth corresponds to a reorganization of civilization. In warm periods, the Loess Plateau becomes a center of population aggregation and cultural prosperity; in cold periods, northern nomadic forces move south, and the ancestors retreat to high ground and build cities for self-defense.
To understand the rhythm of climatic “cyclical return” is to understand the rhythm of civilizational “cyclical return.”
03 Around 5,400 Years Ago
The intellectual achievements of the Three Sovereigns era and the transgression of 5,400 years ago together shaped the civilizational configuration of the Loess Plateau during the Five Emperors period.
From 8,200 to 5,400 years ago, the Earth was in the sustained phase of the great warm period. The Loess Plateau had a mild climate and dense vegetation, offering the most favorable natural conditions for the gestation of civilization. It was during this period that the intellectual foundations of Chinese civilization were laid.
During the Suiren period, Chinese civilization began to take form, establishing the three-principle framework of Heaven, Earth, and Human. In the Fuxi era, the eight cords were elaborated into the Eight Trigrams; Shennong made ploughs, planted the five grains, and tasted the hundred herbs. According to the Third National Cultural Relics Census, there are over 5,000 Yangshao culture sites, more than 3,000 of them in the Central Plains alone. During the reign of the Yellow Emperor, inventions such as writing, music, calendrical calculation, palaces, boats, and carts appeared in succession. The cultural achievements of the Three Sovereigns era provided the intellectual and material foundation for the social integration of the later Five Emperors period. From shamanic worship to humanistic awakening, from revering nature to actively transforming it, this transformation of “turning shamanism into Confucianism” was gradually completed over the long span of the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors.
Around 5,400 years ago, a major transgression raised sea level to about 20 meters above present. Seawater submerged large stretches of coastal lowland on the Third Step. The Lingjiatan culture, originally in the Chaohu basin of the lower Yangtze, was severely affected. Lingjiatan is an outstanding representative of the first phase of China’s “ancient state era.” The site yielded exquisite jades and a complete cosmological system; an eight-pointed star pattern carved on a jade plaque is one of the earliest material witnesses to the “round heaven, square earth” cosmology. Lingjiatan jade-working precision reached an astonishing 0.15 millimeters, and its social organization, hierarchy, and rice-farming civilization had all reached considerable heights.
The transgression forced the Lingjiatan people into large-scale migration. One branch traveled upstream along the Yangtze and Huai river basins into the Second Step, where the Loess Plateau lies, carrying the jade tradition and the eight-pointed-star cosmology with them, and fused with local cultures. It was through this migration that Lingjiatan’s cultural elements settled into the Loess Plateau and profoundly shaped the spatial philosophy of later Chinese civilization.
Around 5,000 years ago, the three great tribes of the Yellow Emperor, the Yan Emperor, and Chiyou converged at Zhuolu. The Yan-Huang tribes were an agrarian alliance of the Loess Plateau, developing mature millet agriculture on the river valleys and tablelands of the Second Step. Chiyou represented the Dongyi peoples of the Third Step, long settled in coastal lowlands. The transgression of 5,400 years ago kept squeezing the living space of the Third Step, forcing Chiyou’s tribe westward. After the Battle of Banquan and the Battle of Zhuolu, the three tribes ultimately moved toward fusion—forming the earliest prototype of the Chinese nation and creating a common totem: the dragon.
From 5,400 to 4,200 years ago came the Five Emperors period, with the climate passing through three phases: warm prosperity, cold-dryness, and warming. The Dadiwan site in Qin’an, Gansu; the Shuanghuaishu site in Gongyi, Henan; the Nanzuo site in Qingyang, Gansu; the Taosi ancient city in southern Shanxi—their scale and density show that the Loess Plateau had already become the core region of Chinese civilization during the Five Emperors period. Taosi yielded the earliest known vermilion writing, pushing China’s documentable history forward by a great step and proving that society had entered the civilizational stage.
The Nanzuo site, selected in 2026 as one of China’s Top Ten Archaeological Discoveries, provides the strongest material evidence. Nanzuo lies on the Dongzhi Tableland in the upper Jing River, dating to about 5,100–4,700 years ago, with a total area of roughly 6 million square meters. Its core consists of nine large rammed-earth platforms and a ring moat, with a north-south central axis—the earliest and clearest central axis of a capital settlement yet seen in ancient China. The “nine platforms” layout at Nanzuo resonates across time with the “Nine-Palace” spatial philosophy of Xuanhui. The nine platforms form an inverted “U” enclosing the core; the “nine platforms” sit at the center of the site, the palace city at the center of the nine platforms, the main hall at the center of the palace city—layer upon layer toward the center, fusing spatial order with the order of power. The palace area already shows axial symmetry, with a clearly legible north-south central axis, proving that 5,000 years ago the Loess Plateau had already given birth to an early state form with complex structure and incipient ritual order.
04 Around 4,200 Years Ago
Around 4,200 years ago, an even more severe transgression raised sea level to about 66 meters above present. This is the most severe known transgression; seawater submerged still broader stretches of the Third Step. The Liangzhu culture, originally in the Taihu basin of the lower Yangtze, collapsed entirely; Longshan and Shijiahe cultures were also severely affected. The ancestors were forced into large-scale westward and northward migration. Advanced production techniques, exquisite jades, and systematic cosmology traveled upstream along the Yangtze and Huai river basins into the Loess Plateau. At the same time, the Sumerian civilization of Mesopotamia and the Harappan civilization of the Indus valley disappeared below the transgression line and moved to the Second Step. The Old Kingdom of Egypt also collapsed within the same window, its remnants retreating south into Nubia. Four great civilizations were shaken by the same force within the same window, forced to move in different directions.
The jade cong, jade bi, and other ritual vessel systems of the Liangzhu culture carried a cosmology centered on “square and circle,” and entered the Loess Plateau with the migration of peoples. The jade cong traveled upstream from the lower Yangtze through Jing-Chu and the Han River into the Loess Plateau, ultimately settling in the form of “jade hidden in walls” in the Huangchengtai walls of the Shimao site in northern Shaanxi. The appearance of Shimao is precisely the material witness of this “formatting” process. “Formatting” here means that the original civilizational program was cleared or overwritten, and a new program was written on the cleared foundation. The cultural genes of Third Step civilizations such as Liangzhu and Longshan were compressed, packaged, and written into the Second Step civilizational program of the Loess Plateau, continuing to operate in new forms. In 2025, the team of Fu Qiaomei of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Shaanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology published ancient DNA research on Shimao in Nature. Based on large-scale nuclear genome analysis of 169 ancient human bone samples, it conclusively confirmed that the main population of Shimao culture originated from the late Yangshao population of northern Shaanxi, with continuous cultural and population development. The research also reconstructed a family lineage spanning four generations within Shimao ancient city, clearly revealing a mode of social hierarchy built around patrilineal kinship. The grand Huangchengtai, complex gate structures, and numerous Liangzhu-style jades indicate that before the establishment of the Xia dynasty, a complex society with an early state form had already appeared on the Loess Plateau.
After Chiyou’s defeat, his people did not disappear entirely. Under the sustained pressure of transgression, part of the remnants merged into the Huaxia, and part migrated south into the middle Yangtze and Pearl River basins, becoming ancestors of later peoples such as the Miao, Yao, and She. The transgression of 4,200 years ago intensified westward pressure on Third Step populations; overlapping waves of migration accelerated the reshaping of the civilizational order. In this process, the Loess Plateau once again became a “safe harbor” and a “furnace” for Third Step migrants, completing another round of absorption and integration.
From 4,200 to 3,000 years ago came the Three Dynasties period. On the western edge of the Loess Plateau, the Qijia culture continued this cultural wave; the Gan-Qing region had already developed relatively systematic bronze production and extensively introduced wheat and barley originating in West Asia. At the end of the Shang the climate turned cold; in the late Western Zhou the Han River froze and the Quanrong invaded. It was precisely in this cyclical return of cold and warmth that the Western Zhou origin was established: King Wen composed the Zhouyi, the Grand Duke composed the Shan Hai Jing, and Ji Dan composed the Zhou Li. The “well-field system” and “well-field cities” derived from “Nine-Palace” cognition were also established during the Three Dynasties, becoming the logic of spatial creation and the master plan of form for 3,000 years. During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, the Hundred Schools of Thought emerged in concentration, and Chinese philosophy completed the historic turn from shamanism to Confucianism.
Through Qin-Han and Sui-Tang, the Guanzhong Plain where the Loess Plateau lies remained the political and cultural core of Chinese civilization. The Qin, based in Guanzhong, completed the “great unity” political framework—the system of commanderies and counties, the same writing, the same track gauge, unified weights and measures—laying down authoritative norms for successive dynasties. Han inherited the Qin system; Chang’an became the starting point of the Silk Road; the cultural genes of the Loess Plateau radiated through institutions, writing, and ethics across the East Asian continent. In the Sui-Tang period, Chang’an became the largest city in the world at the time, with a population of over one million, more than 70 diplomatic missions, and over 30,000 foreign students—the most dazzling hub of civilizational exchange on the Great Corridor. Through Song-Yuan-Ming-Qing, although the political center shifted east and north, the Loess Plateau’s status as the root of Chinese civilization never wavered. The planning of Yuan Dadu and Ming-Qing Beijing still followed the Western Zhou state-building ideal of “nine longitudinal and nine latitudinal avenues” and “ancestral temple on the left, altar of soil and grain on the right.”
05 Contraction and Expansion
The civilizational history of the Loess Plateau has never been unidirectional. It alternates between contraction and expansion. In cold periods it contracts and holds; in warm periods it expands outward. Every contraction and expansion is a self-renewal of civilization within the cycle of “absorption—refinement—radiation.”
Cold-Period Contraction: Stone-City Defense and the Cohesion of Strength
Around 4,200 years ago, the globe entered a dry-cold period. On the loess ridges of the Northern Shaanxi Plateau, dozens of stone-city sites emerged. Shimao is the peak of this defensive system, with inner and outer stone walls, bastions and corner towers on the walls, and a barbican at the gate; the eastern gate of the outer city is hailed as “China’s First Gate.” The eastern gate site of Shimao’s outer city yielded large quantities of precious artifacts—pottery, jades, murals—with a complex gate structure composed of inner and outer barbicans, gate passages, and platforms, embodying superb defensive engineering. The stone cities were not built for daily habitation but as refuges against raiders. Ancient DNA research on Shimao confirms that its main population was Huaxia; they built cities to guard against pressure from the north. When the climate turned cold and the southward pressure of northern nomadic forces increased, the ancestors retreated to high ground, using stone cities as shields to build a defensive chain. The pressure of cold periods forced the ancestors to consolidate strength; the construction of stone cities required large-scale organization and coordination; this “forced cohesion” in turn strengthened civilization’s internal cohesion and organizational capacity. Every cold-period contraction is a “quenching”—forging resilience under pressure, accumulating strength in crisis.
Warm-Period Expansion: Civilizational Radiation and New Integration
In contrast to cold-period contraction and self-preservation, warm periods were windows of outward expansion for the Loess Plateau. From 5,400 to 4,200 years ago, its cultural influence radiated in all directions: westward, the Yangshao culture system expanded into the Gan-Qing region; northward, Hongshan jades moved south along the Yanshan line; southeastward, Longshan black pottery and jades spread along the Yellow and Huai river basins across the North China Plain; southward, Gan-Qing populations migrated along the Hengduan Mountain valleys toward the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. At the same time, these routes became conduits for incoming foreign elements: bronze technology and wheat cultivation from Central Asia entered along the Central Qiang Route; rice-farming technology from the south moved north along the Yangtze-Han River line. Every warm-period expansion is a “melting furnace”—spreading civilization through radiation, achieving new elevation through absorption.
Contraction and expansion appear opposite yet are in fact one. In cold periods, strength is consolidated and resilience tempered through defense; in warm periods, civilization is spread and external nutrients absorbed through radiation. This cyclical recurrence of “tension and preservation” is precisely the vivid practice of “cyclical return and self-consistency” on the Loess Plateau. In each cycle, the Loess Plateau completes a leap within the full sequence of “absorption—refinement—radiation,” and the height of civilization climbs with every alternation of “contraction—expansion.”
And the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain, in every alternation of ascent and descent, becomes the most solid spine of Chinese civilization on the Second Step.
06 Reaching in All Directions
The Loess Plateau has never been closed. In the “Heaven-Earth matrix,” it lies at the intersection of the four river basin lines and the four step lines—a pivot of cultural flow from all directions. At the core of this pivot lies the intersection of the three great civilizational transmission arteries around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau with the blue-vein network of the four river basins.
The Three Arteries of the Great Corridor around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau
Around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau run three great civilizational arteries spanning ten thousand years, with the Loess Plateau as their common eastern pivot. The Northern Qiang Route connects the Hexi Corridor and the Western Regions; bronze-casting and wheat cultivation from Central Asia entered the Loess Plateau along this route around 4,000 years ago. The eastern exit of the Central Qiang Route reaches directly into the Wei River basin; from about 8,200 to 5,400 years ago, the ancient Qiang entered the Loess Plateau from the eastern edge of the plateau along this route. A 2025 archaeological survey confirmed that the Central Qiang Route “extends west to the Western Regions and further to South Asia, Central Asia, and West Asia; north to the Hexi Corridor linking north and south; south to Tibet, Sichuan, and the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau; and east to Shaanxi, Gansu, and Ningxia, extending into the Central Plains”—“truly an indispensable cross-hub of early Eurasian civilizational interaction.” The Southern Qiang Route connects East Asia and South Asia to the south.
The three arteries and their secondary routes form a complete closure: the Central Qiang Route intersects with the Yellow River line and the Xiliao-Xilamulun line in the Hetao region; the Northern Qiang Route connects with the north-south Yanshan line via the Mongolian Plateau; the Southern Qiang Route connects with the Zang-Yi Corridor and the Yangtze-Han River line. Primary and secondary routes interweave, forming a complete spatial network centered on the Loess Plateau.
The Blue-Vein Network of the Four River Basins
The book summarizes China’s river basins into four east-west “blue veins”: the Xiliao-Tarim line, the Yellow River line, the Yangtze line, and the Pearl River line. The Loess Plateau sits precisely in the middle reaches of the Yellow River line.
With the Xiliao-Tarim basin: Hongshan jades moved south along the Yanshan line and met the Longshan culture of the Loess Plateau; their cultural elements merged into the trunk of Chinese civilization through the Loess Plateau. With the Yellow River basin: the Yellow River and its tributaries—the Wei, Jing, Luo, and Fen—constitute the aorta of the Loess Plateau’s civilizational genesis and transmission; the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain is the most essential stretch of the middle Yellow River, and it was here that the Western Zhou established the spatial form of the “well-field system” and “well-field cities.” With the Yangtze basin: Shijiahe and Qujialing cultures entered the Loess Plateau via the Yangtze-Han River line; after the transgression of 4,200 years ago, one branch of Liangzhu civilization moved north and ultimately settled at Shimao in northern Shaanxi. With the Pearl River basin: connected via the southwestern and coastal routes.
The distributional shift of the Longzhou carp provides unique biological evidence for climatic cyclical return. This fish, found today only in the upper reaches of the Xijiang River in Guangxi, left quantities of pharyngeal teeth at the Jiahu site in Henan around 8,200 years ago, when the climate of the Huai River basin resembled today’s Xijiang basin. As the climate cooled, its range contracted southward from the Huai River to the Pearl River basin—living evidence of climatic “cyclical return,” and corroboration of an ecological and cultural link across thousands of years between the Loess Plateau and the Pearl River basin.
Four Spatial Nodes
Surrounding the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain, four spatial nodes serve as gateways to the four directions: Taosi in southern Shanxi is the fulcrum extending southeast, representing a more mature early state form in the Central Plains; Erlitou in northern Henan displays a “Nine-Palace” layout, marking civilization’s movement from “square states” to a “broad-territory kingly state”; the Han River valley in southern Shaanxi is a key node of north-south cultural flow; the Tao and Daxia river basins in southern Gansu are the gateway through which the Central Qiang Route enters the Loess Plateau, where diverse cultures fuse. The Guanzhong Basin itself is enclosed by passes on four sides—Hangu to the east, Dasan to the west, Wu to the south, Xiao to the north. With the four passes secured, the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain becomes a “land of four enclosures,” able both to radiate culture in all directions in warm periods and to close itself off and preserve strength in cold periods.
From Bingling Temple in Yongjing, Gansu, to Guanque Tower in Yongji, Shanxi, a single Yellow River strings together the eastern and western ends of the Loess Plateau. The Buddha statues of Bingling Temple witness Buddhism’s eastward passage along the Central Qiang Route; the verses of Guanque Tower record Chinese civilization’s gaze upon Heaven, Earth, sun, and moon. From Yongjing to Yongji is not merely a geographic traverse but a walking of civilization. Yongjing then Yongji—the Yellow River flows into the sea.
The driving force from the ocean is equally not to be ignored. The repeated occurrence of transgression and regression profoundly shaped the Loess Plateau’s relationship with maritime culture. The transgression of 5,400 years ago caused the Lingjiatan culture to move to the Second Step. The transgression of 4,200 years ago was when the coastline was closest to the Loess Plateau: Liangzhu culture, Sumerian civilization, and Harappan civilization disappeared below the transgression line at the same time and migrated on a large scale to the Second Step. In this process, the Loess Plateau became a “safe harbor” and a “furnace” for Third Step migrants. The book summarizes the four step lines as the Mu Continent Line, the Lingjiatan Line, the Liangzhu-Sumer Line, and the Asia Line. The Second Step where the Loess Plateau lies absorbed the civilizational achievements of the Third Step in each transgression, and radiated the refined achievements back to the Third Step in each regression.
And the Taihang Mountains are a natural barrier between the plateau and the ocean; the Eight Gorges are natural “stone gates” on that barrier, cut by rivers and worn by time, connecting the Second and Third Steps. They are not only indispensable routes for migration and material flow but lifelines for the plateau civilization’s outward extension.
It is precisely through this “reaching in all directions” configuration—the three arteries of the Great Corridor and their secondary closed networks, the blue-vein network of the four river basins, and the gateway support of the four spatial nodes—that the Loess Plateau completed the full cycle of “convergence—refinement—radiation” of cultures from all directions. It is not passive reception but active transformation; not simple superposition but organic reconstruction.
结语
Conclusion
The course of the Loess Plateau is the perfect footnote to “cyclical return and self-consistency.” It is both a recorder of climatic change—the loess layers seal millions of years of Earth’s cold-warm alternation, and Academician An Zhisheng’s theory of “Three Cyclical Returns of East Asian Monsoon Change” is the climatic epic read from this land—and a preserver of the civilizational sequence: the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors were active here, the Three Dynasties and Nine Reigns rose and fell here, cultures from all directions converged and were refined here, ultimately sublimating into the complete form of Chinese civilization.
From the Xihoudu fire of 2.43 million years ago to the central-axis city of Nanzuo, from early bronze technology to the ancient DNA family lineage of Shimao, and on to Erlitou, Yinxu, and the Chang’an of Han-Tang, the Loess Plateau preserves an unparalleled, complete, and continuous sequence of human civilizational evolution on Earth. The “nine platforms” and “central axis” of Nanzuo prove that 5,000 years ago the Loess Plateau had already gestated the prototype of a ritual state; the patrilineal family and social hierarchy of Shimao are genetic evidence of Chinese civilization’s “unity in diversity.” Every transgression is a “formatting,” every warm period a “restart,” every cold period a “quenching.” The civilizational program of the Loess Plateau upgrades itself through this cycle of “formatting—restart—quenching”: from Yangshao painted pottery to Longshan black pottery, from Shimao stone city to Erlitou palace city, from Western Zhou ritual order to Qin imperial system—each cycle raises civilization one step higher.
The Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain is its heart; the three arteries of the Great Corridor are its blood vessels connecting to the world; the four river basins are its laterally extending arms; the four nodes are its gateways to the four directions. Cold, it contracts for self-preservation, using stone cities as shields; warm, it expands outward, using civilization as its spear. It reaches in all directions, connecting the four quarters, refining in each convergence, spreading in each radiation—Zhou, Qin, Han, Tang, all were thus.
Academician An Zhisheng, through half a century of loess research, tells us: the climate is changing, and it has its regularity. To understand that regularity, to comply with it, and to complete “self-consistency” within “cyclical return”—this is not only the survival wisdom of the Loess Plateau over the past five thousand years but also its fundamental path toward the future.
The Loess Plateau records the “cyclical return” of climate in its strata and bears the “self-consistency” of history in its civilization. This land is itself a living Xuanhui; the history book written in loess has not yet closed, and its future chapters await the Chinese people of a new warm period to continue writing.
