引言

Introduction

"Holding fast to the great image, the world comes to him." As China and the West move from geographical civilization toward global civilization, a spatial philosophy needs to be constructed. In the grand narrative constructed by Xuanhui: Spatial Philosophy and Its Planning Practice, the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain occupies an irreplaceable position. It lies at the core of the "nine-grid" geopolitical structure of Chinese civilization, the intersection of four river basin lines and four terrace lines, and the key transformation hub between the eastern end of the Great Corridor around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the western end of the Great Corridor along the Pacific coastline. These two great corridors connect East Asia, Central Asia, South Asia, and West Asia into a vast network of civilizational transmission that has lasted for thousands of years. In short, the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain lies between the Yellow River and the Yangtze River, between the plateau and the sea—the most core zone where civilizational factors from all directions move from "introduction" to "internalization."

The Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain is the Guanzhong Plain. It begins in the west at Baoji and ends in the east at Tongguan, leans against the Beishan Mountains to the north, and faces the Qinling Mountains to the south, stretching more than eight hundred li from east to west. This fertile land, formed by alluvial deposits of the Wei River, is the most abundant river valley plain on the Loess Plateau. The archaeologist Mr. Su Bingqi pointed out that the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain, extending from Baoji to the Yi-Luo region, is the most important area for the origin of Chinese civilization. In the spatial framework of Xuanhui, the mid-latitude band of 25 to 40 degrees north is "the relatively stable 15 degrees of human activity," and the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain lies precisely at 30 to 35 degrees north and 1,000 to 1,500 meters in elevation—exactly "the region with the best human survival comfort and the longest survival time axis." From the Denisovans to the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors, from the Three Dynasties and Nine Reigns to the Zhou, Qin, Han, and Tang, this land carries the most complete historical memory of Chinese civilization.

01 The Land of Abundance

The formation of the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain is a product of the earth's long evolution. The Wei River originates from the Niaoshu Mountain in Weiyuan County, Gansu Province, and alluviated this fertile plain while being held between the Qinling Mountains and the Loess Plateau. The Wei River Basin borders the Ordos Plateau to the north, the Qinling orogenic belt to the south, the northeastern margin of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to the west, and the North China Plain to the east. It lies in the convergence and intersection zone of three major tectonic systems and is a key hub connecting the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau with the Pacific coast.

The loess deposits of the Loess Plateau are themselves a silent history book. Since the Quaternary, the northwest wind has carried large amounts of dust from the Mongolian Plateau and the Central Asian deserts, depositing it north of the Qinling Mountains to form loess. Academician An Zhisheng of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and his team, through more than half a century of research, revealed that loess represents the dry and cold periods dominated by the winter monsoon, while paleosols represent the warm and humid periods dominated by the summer monsoon; the alternation of the two constitutes a climate record of millions of years on the Loess Plateau. The "monsoon control theory of East Asian environmental change," summarized by An Zhisheng, successfully compared Chinese loess with deep-sea sedimentary sequences for the first time, establishing sequences of Chinese paleoenvironmental change over the past 2.4 million years, 130,000 years, and 20,000 years. "Every grain of loess is a diary written by the earth"—this remark by Academician An Zhisheng captures the deep heritage of the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain. Loess particles are fine and highly porous; even with sparse rainfall, the soil can retain a certain amount of moisture, providing uniquely favorable conditions for early agriculture.

The term "Land of Abundance" first referred to the Guanzhong Plain. During the Warring States period, when Su Qin persuaded King Hui of Qin, he called the Qin state's Guanzhong region a "heavenly storehouse." When Zhang Liang advised Liu Bang in the Western Han to establish the capital in Guanzhong, he formally proposed: "This is what is called a thousand-li golden wall, the Land of Abundance." Thereafter Guanzhong was always known as the "Land of Abundance," until after the Tang dynasty this crown gradually shifted to the Chengdu Plain.

The Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain's solidity on all four sides made it a natural political center, and the eight rivers around Chang'an made it an ideal agricultural base. The Guanzhong Plain is known as "eight rivers around Chang'an"—the Jing, Wei, Ba, Chan, Feng, Hao, Yu, and Lao rivers nourish this fertile land. The Jing and Wei rivers flow into the Yellow River; the Ba and Chan rivers flow into the Wei River; the Feng, Hao, Yu, and Lao rivers are all tributaries of the Wei River. These rivers not only provided the water needed for agricultural irrigation but also constituted the natural defense system of ancient Chang'an. The Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain "can advance to attack and retreat to defend"; it could "face east to control the feudal lords," and in times of turmoil retreat to Guanzhong to preserve its strength.

02 The Beginning of Civilization

The Loess Plateau, where the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain is located, preserves an absolutely unique and complete sequence of human civilizational evolution on earth. In 2019, the team of Academician Chen Fahu of the Chinese Academy of Sciences discovered a Denisovan mandible fossil in the Baishiya Karst Cave in Xiahe, Gansu, pushing the history of human activity on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau from 40,000 years ago back to 160,000 years ago—the oldest evidence of the "never-interrupted civilizational sequence." Thereafter, Paleolithic remains such as Xihoudu Man (about 2.43 million years ago), Lantian Man (about 1.15 million years ago), Dali Man (about 230,000 to 180,000 years ago), and Xujiayao Man (about 125,000 to 100,000 years ago) were layered one upon another. The Xihoudu site yielded the earliest evidence of human use of fire in China; Lantian Man is one of the earliest Homo erectus in northern Asia; the Dali Man skull fossil preserves important information on human evolution. These Paleolithic remains form a continuous sequence of human activity on and around the Loess Plateau.

Entering the Neolithic Age, the Dadiwan culture (about 8,200 years ago), Yangshao culture (about 7,000 to 5,400 years ago), and Longshan culture (about 4,500 to 4,000 years ago) appeared in succession. The Dadiwan site covers a total area of about 1.1 million square meters and has yielded tens of thousands of pottery, stone, and bone artifacts; it is one of the Neolithic sites with the longest duration and the longest continuous occupation in northwestern China. Yangshao culture sites number more than 5,000, with more than 3,000 in the Central Plains alone; the Guanzhong Plain and its surroundings are the core distribution area of Yangshao culture. Sites such as Banpo in Xi'an, Beishouling in Baoji, Shijia in Weinan, and Quanhu Village in Huaxian constitute a dense settlement network, and painted pottery culture reached its brilliant peak during this period. The Longshan culture, with its exquisite black pottery and large city sites, displayed the final step of Chinese prehistoric society toward civilization.

The period of the Three Sovereigns laid the humanistic foundation of Chinese civilization. Suiren first distinguished the three ways of "heaven, earth, and humanity," establishing the basic principle that "the human is the chief of all things." Fuxi deduced the eight trigrams from the eight cords, "to comprehend the virtue of the gods and to classify the nature of all things"—the earliest systematic abstraction by the Chinese of the laws of heaven and earth. Fuxi was born in Tianshui on the upper reaches of the Wei River, and Nüwa was also active there. Shennong made ploughs and digging tools, planted the five grains, and tasted the hundred herbs, establishing another relationship between the Chinese and nature—improving living conditions through cognition and practice.

The period of the Five Emperors further advanced this civilizational process. The activity areas of the Yan Emperor and the Yellow Emperor were concentrated in the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain and its surroundings; the Battle of Banquan and the Battle of Zhuolu facilitated the fusion of the Huaxia ethnic group. During the period of Emperor Ku, the range of activity began to extend toward the third terrace—precisely a spatial shift driven by a cold period. The capitals of Yao at Pingyang, Shun at Puban, and Yu at Yangcheng were all located on terraces or loess tablelands near tributaries of the middle reaches of the Yellow River. The legend of Yu the Great taming the waters is precisely the collective memory of the ancestors responding to extreme climate. Cultural remains from different periods appear almost continuously in succession on the same land—extremely rare on a global scale. The reason the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain can preserve this complete sequence is precisely that it occupies a key node position on the Great Ring Road, superimposing upon its own cultural accumulation the civilizational gifts from different directions of the Great Ring Road.

03 The Giant Salamander Becomes the Dragon

At Longshan, the western gateway of the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain, a far-reaching symbolic transformation took place—the first great spiritual creation of Chinese civilization.

Longshan was rich in giant salamanders in ancient times, commonly known as "baby fish." The giant salamander can reach more than 1.5 meters in length and is the largest extant amphibian in the world, living in clear mountain streams and rock caves. The giant salamander often emits a low call that echoes through deep river valleys, strikingly resembling the cry of an infant; to the ancestors, it seemed as if the mountain were "giving birth" to a child. Matrilineal clan society regarded reproduction as the foremost matter, and the ancestors thus developed a totemic worship of the giant salamander. The "dragon" in their eyes was, at first, the "giant salamander."

This inference has been powerfully corroborated by archaeological discoveries at the Dadiwan site in Qin'an, Gansu, and the Xiping site in Gangu County. The Dadiwan site dates to about 8,200 to 4,800 years ago; the unearthed human-head-shaped vessel-mouth painted pottery bottle fuses a female head with a pottery bottle, is a masterpiece of Chinese prehistoric sculpture, and is generally regarded by academia as one of the early prototypes of the image of Nüwa. The salamander-pattern painted pottery bottle unearthed at the Xiping site in Gangu County bears a human-face-salamander-body pattern on its body—direct material evidence that the ancestors fused totemic worship of the giant salamander with worship of Nüwa. Two painted pottery bottles, one shaped with a human head and one painted with a salamander pattern, jointly point to the same cultural fact: in the Longshan region about eight thousand to five thousand years ago, the ancestors created the ancestral image of "human head and salamander body." Later this worship evolved into the "human head and snake body" images of Fuxi and Nüwa, and the salamander totem also evolved into the dragon totem. "In heaven it is image, on earth it is form, in man it is the imitation of form."

The dragon emerging from the giant salamander was the first great creation of the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain at the symbolic level. The birth of the dragon occurred precisely against the background of the humanistic awakening that "the human is the chief of all things": the ancestors no longer passively revered nature but actively elevated a living creature into a spiritual totem protecting themselves. Thereafter the dragon became the most core cultural symbol of Chinese civilization, running through the entire history of China. From the salamander pattern on pottery to the coiled-dragon pattern on bronzes, from Fuxi and Nüwa to the emperor as the "true dragon son of heaven," the concept of the dragon radiated outward from the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain, becoming the most tenacious cultural bond of Chinese civilization.

When the climate turned cold, the giant salamander migrated south along the Qiang South Road of the Great Ring Road, while the people who took the giant salamander as their totem carried the character "Long" (陇) with them, moving south from Longshan all the way through Bazhong, Xingyi, Loudi, and Baise, finally reaching Longzhou. A totem symbol completed a cultural transmission spanning thousands of kilometers along the Great Ring Road; the southward migration of the character "Long" became the trajectory of the dragon symbol walking in reality.

The most fundamental contribution of the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain lies in its creation of the underlying genes of Chinese culture. Writing, pottery, bronze, jade, cities, and society—sixfold genes completed their full evolution from germination to maturity in and around the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain. Among them, the most crucial are two transformation nodes: the intellectual foundation of the Western Zhou and the institutional consolidation of the Qin and Han. Together they constitute the underlying logic of the unbroken continuity of Chinese civilization.

The Root of Writing: From the Taosi Red Writing to the He Zun Inscription

Writing is the first gene of civilization. On a flat flask unearthed at the Taosi site in Xiangfen, Shanxi, archaeologists discovered red writing dating to about 4,100 years ago; one of the characters is generally recognized as "文" (wen, meaning "culture" or "pattern"), in direct line with Shang dynasty oracle bone script. This is the earliest Chinese character discovered by archaeology to date, advancing the documented history of China by a significant step.

The most complete expression of the writing gene in the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain is the He Zun, unearthed in Baoji, Shaanxi, in 1963. Cast on the bottom of its interior are 122 characters of inscription, among which the four characters "宅兹中国" (dwelling in this China) are the earliest known material evidence of the term "China." "宅兹中国,自之乂民" means "I shall dwell in the central region of the world and govern the people from here." The He Zun's place of excavation, Baoji, lies precisely at the western end of the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain: when the name "China" was first inscribed on a bronze vessel, the place it referred to was the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain. From the red-written "文" at Taosi to the "宅兹中国" of the He Zun, this gene chain of writing completed its full evolution from germination to maturity.

The History of Pottery: A Carrier of Codes, Totems, and Civilizational Memory

Pottery is the second gene of civilization. Before the birth of writing, pottery carried the earliest spiritual expression and civilizational memory of the ancestors, an indispensable link in the gene sequence of Chinese civilization.

The red-written flat flask unearthed at the Taosi site is precisely the critical point of transition from pottery codes to true writing. Before this, decorative patterns and codes on pottery had continued for thousands of years. About 8,200 to 7,000 years ago, the earliest geometric patterns and symbols appeared on the painted pottery of the Dadiwan culture; China's earliest painted pottery tradition germinated here. About 7,000 to 6,000 years ago, the painted pottery of the Yangshao culture entered its brilliant period. The human-face-fish-pattern painted pottery basin unearthed at the Banpo site in Xi'an combines a human face with fish patterns; academia generally considers it related to the totemic worship or fishing-hunting livelihood of the Banpo clan. The stork-fish-stone-axe painted pottery jar unearthed at Yancun, Ruzhou, Henan, depicts a stork holding a fish in its beak with a stone axe standing beside it; Mr. Yan Wenming interpreted it as a monument to the stork clan's victory over the fish clan—a pictorial record of social conflict and integration in the late Yangshao culture. About 5,500 to 4,500 years ago, the painted pottery of the Majiayao culture pushed decorative patterns to their extreme; swirl patterns, grid patterns, and frog patterns covered pottery surfaces, becoming the last brilliance of painted pottery. Thereafter the black pottery of the Longshan culture became known as "thin as paper, hard as porcelain, resonant as a chime, bright as lacquer," marking pottery's transition from painted to plain, from practical to ritual.

From the painted pottery of Dadiwan, through the human-face-fish pattern of Banpo, the bird pattern of Miaodigou, and the swirl pattern of Majiayao, to the dragon plate and red writing of Taosi, pottery recorded in the manner of "things" the most important spiritual trajectory of the origin stage of Chinese civilization. They are not the "predecessors" of writing but another carrier of memory running parallel to writing. The human-head-shaped vessel-mouth painted pottery bottle of Dadiwan freezes the image of Nüwa in clay; the salamander-pattern painted pottery bottle engraves the origin of the dragon on its body; the human-face-fish-pattern painted pottery basin of Banpo seals the social memory of the fishing-hunting age at its bottom; the stork-fish-stone-axe painted pottery jar paints the conquest and fusion of prehistoric tribes on its surface. What pottery wrote with color, pattern, and form is a civilizational history more than two thousand years earlier than oracle bone script.

Bronze Vessels: From the Erlitou Workshop to Bronze History Books

Bronze is the third gene of civilization. The Erlitou site in Yanshi, Henan, yielded China's earliest large-scale bronze casting workshop, marking the full opening of China's Bronze Age. Bronze technology completed its localization and institutional sublimation in and around the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain. During the Western Zhou, bronze was endowed with ritual meaning—"vessels store ritual"—and bronze vessels became carriers of status hierarchy and political order. The 122-character inscription of the He Zun is precisely the concentrated expression of this ritual order; among its characters, "德" (de, virtue) already carries the heart radical, reflecting the Zhou people's political ideals of "governing from the center" and "matching heaven with virtue."

The Baoji Bronze Ware Museum also houses another national-treasure-level artifact known as a "bronze history book"—the Lai Pan. In 2003, the Lai Pan was unearthed from a hoard at Yangjia Village, Mei County, Baoji; cast inside the pan are 372 characters of inscription, the largest number of inscription characters among Western Zhou bronzes unearthed since the founding of New China. The inscription, in the voice of Shan Lai, eighth-generation heir of the Shan family, records major historical events in which eight generations of the Shan family assisted twelve Western Zhou kings in military campaigns, governance, and management of forests and marshes, running through almost the entire historical thread of the Western Zhou from King Wen to King Xuan. The Lai Pan inscription explicitly records the genealogies of the Western Zhou kings, corroborating the authenticity of the records concerning the Western Zhou royal line in Sima Qian's Records of the Grand Historian · Basic Annals of Zhou, and ending a millennium-long dispute in historiography. The Lai Pan and the He Zun, one after the other—one inscribed with the name "China," one recording the reality of the Western Zhou royal line—together constitute the most complete written testimony of the bronze civilization of the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain. From the Erlitou bronze workshop to the Western Zhou ritual and music system, from the He Zun's "dwelling in this China" to the Lai Pan's Western Zhou royal line, the bronze gene completed its leap from technology to institution, from artifact to history book, in the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain.

The Soul of Jade: From Liangzhu Ritual Vessels to Shimao's Jade Hidden in Walls

Jade is the fourth gene of civilization. In the Liangzhu culture, the ritual vessel system formed by jade cong, jade bi, and jade yue carried a cosmology centered on "square and circle"; the jade cong is square outside and round inside, symbolizing a round heaven and square earth. This system established the core function of jade as a vessel for communicating between heaven and earth.

The propagation path of jade from Liangzhu toward the northwest is clearly discernible. At the Shimao site in Shenmu, Shaanxi, various jade artifacts are embedded in the walls of the Huangchengtai platform, some from Liangzhu and Shijiahe thousands of li away. Shimao's custom of "hiding jade in walls" involved slicing jade yue and jade spades longitudinally into thin pieces, wrapping them in straw-mixed mud, and building them into stone walls—ritual vessels used by the stratum holding the power of divination and sacrifice. Jade zhang, jade knives, jade gui, and other types appeared in large numbers at Shimao, indicating that the cosmology and view of power carried by jade had crossed regional boundaries. After the Qijia culture accepted the jade tradition, it further spread westward; jade became a common genetic code of Chinese civilization—the material carrier of ritual, the visible symbol of power, and the spatial expression of cosmology, three sharing one origin and running through as one.

The System of Cities: From the Erlitou Nine-Grid to the Well-Field City

Cities are the fifth gene of civilization. The "well"-shaped main road network of the Erlitou site preliminarily displayed a "nine-grid" layout framework with the palace area at the center; the capital planning concept of "choosing the center of the world to establish the state" was born from this. During the Western Zhou, the ideal city-building form stipulated in the Rites of Zhou · Records of Examination of Crafts—"the artisan builds the state, nine li square, with three gates on each side. Within the state, nine vertical and nine horizontal avenues..."—is precisely the complete expression of the "nine-grid" spatial form. Palaces and ancestral temples occupy the center; "city" is "state," and "square city" is "square state." The "state" is the great nine-grid, the "city" is the small nine-grid, and the "courtyard" is the smallest nine-grid.

The "well-field city" is a native urban prototype contributed by Chinese civilization to the history of world urban planning. It took shape during the Western Zhou, nearly three thousand years earlier than the "garden city" proposed by Howard in 1898. Howard's "garden city" attempted to fuse the advantages of town and country in the industrial age to alleviate big-city diseases, whereas the Western Zhou "well-field city" derived directly from the land system and cosmology of an agrarian society, fusing ritual order with spatial form and embodying the political ideals of "governing from the center" and "matching heaven with virtue." Its essence is not escaping the city but settling the world with order. From the "well"-shaped avenues of the Erlitou site to the continuation of the "nine vertical and nine horizontal" pattern in Yuan Dadu and Ming-Qing Beijing, for three thousand years the grid logic of the "well-field city" has always been the "metalanguage" of Chinese urban spatial construction.

The Order of Society: Western Zhou Thought and Qin-Han Institutions

Social structure is the sixth gene of civilization. From Taosi to Shimao to Erlitou, social stratification grew increasingly complex, power centers gradually emerged, and state forms took shape step by step. The two major transformation points of Chinese social structure were completed precisely in the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain: the "intellectual foundation" of the Western Zhou and the "institutional consolidation" of the Qin and Han.

The Western Zhou transformation established the spiritual foundation of Chinese civilization. The Duke of Zhou created rites and music, replacing shamanic spirit worship with human ethical order and maintaining social structure through the patriarchal clan system. King Wen composed the I Ching to model heaven; the Grand Duke composed the Classic of Mountains and Seas to model earth; Ji Dan composed the Rites of Zhou to establish human ethics; the Grand Duke composed the Investiture of the Gods to establish the investiture of deities—divine authority returned to royal authority. The most fundamental framework of thought, geography, human ethics, and divinity of Chinese civilization was thereby established, completing the transition from "shaman" to "Confucian" and marking Chinese civilization's departure from the religious path toward the humanistic path.

The Qin-Han transformation consolidated the Western Zhou ideal into a sustainably operating institutional system. Qin Shi Huang established a unified dynasty in the Guanzhong Plain, and the implementation of the commandery-county system extended the "nine-grid" grid logic from the capital to the entire territory. "Uniform writing, uniform cart axles, uniform ethics, unified weights and measures"—these were precisely the concrete means of projecting the spatial ideal originating in the Western Zhou onto the empire's territory. For the following two thousand years, the political framework of successive Chinese dynasties basically followed the Qin system. Centralized authority, commandery-county administration, uniform writing, uniform cart axles—although these institutions were adjusted in detail, their underlying structure never fundamentally changed. Mr. Bo Yang evaluated the Qin dynasty: "It laid down authoritative norms for successive dynasties, so that the several hundred emperors who followed could only make minor revisions within the circle he had conceived, and were powerless to make great changes."

Over the following two thousand years, although the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties continuously adjusted institutional details, their underlying structure never departed from the intellectual foundation of the Western Zhou and the institutional framework of the Qin and Han. The two transformations together constitute the complete evolutionary chain of the Chinese social gene. The Western Zhou established its principles; the Qin implemented its institutions; the two superimposed and settled on the loess of the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain, constituting the deepest gene of Chinese culture. As the underlying grammar of space, the "nine-grid" is at once a mode of thinking, a spatial form, and a framework of social governance. From chessboard to city, from well-field to square courtyard, from the eight trigrams to the matrix, one lineage has been passed down without interruption. The Zhou created rites and music; the Qin unified the world; the Han laid down institutions; the Tang opened an age of prosperity; the Song and Ming continued its vein. Historically, thirteen dynasties established their capitals in Guanzhong; from Qin to Tang over more than a thousand years, Guanzhong culture reached its zenith, and thereafter the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing also continued to develop within its framework.

05 Connecting Mountains and Seas

The most unique geographical significance of the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain lies in its being a corridor connecting mountains and seas. The Qinling Mountains, stretching across the heart of China, hold the Yellow River to the north, draw the Yangtze River to the south, meet the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to the west, and gaze toward the sea to the east, making the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain a key hub connecting the first terrace (the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau) and the third terrace (the North China Plain and the middle-lower Yangtze Plain).

The three main trunk lines of the Great Corridor around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau converge here. The Qiang North Road runs west from the northeastern margin of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau along the northern foot of the Kunlun Mountains, enters Central Asia via the Pamir Plateau, and extends further to Mesopotamia; during cold periods populations spread from the plateau toward Central Asia and Mesopotamia, and during warm periods they flowed back in reverse. The Qiang Central Road runs west from the Qinghai Lake region, enters Ruoqiang in Xinjiang via the Qaidam Basin, and connects the southern margin of the Tarim Basin with the Hexi Corridor; during cold periods populations spread toward the Tarim Basin and the Hexi Corridor, and during warm periods they gathered toward the plateau. The Qiang South Road runs south from the Sichuan Basin along the river valleys of the Hengduan Mountains, enters Myanmar and India via Yunnan; during cold periods populations spread toward the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, the Indochinese Peninsula, and the Indian Ocean, and during warm periods they flowed back in reverse. The three trunk lines each perform their own function, together constituting the complete transmission network of the Great Ring Road, and the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain is precisely the converging point at the eastern end of this network.

Wheat cultivation and bronze technology transmitted from the Qiang North Road were transformed by the Loess Plateau and then spread eastward to the North China Plain. After the Qijia culture accepted Western bronze-casting technology and the technology of domesticating wheat and sheep, it grew strong and returned to the Central Plains, inaugurating the Xia dynasty. Rice-farming culture and jade traditions transmitted from the Qiang South Road crossed the Qinling Mountains and merged with local culture in the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain. The ritual vessel system of the Liangzhu culture—jade cong, jade bi, and others—carried a cosmology centered on "square and circle," and entered the Loess Plateau along with population migrations.

Laozi rode a green ox west through the Hangu Pass, crossed Longshan along the Wei River valley, entered the Hexi Corridor, and traveled west in the direction of the Qiang Central Road. The Hangu Pass lies at the eastern end of the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain, and the San Pass lies at the western end; Laozi's route out of the pass ran precisely across the entire Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain. In cultural geography, the thousand-li Shu Road from Chang'an to Chengdu connected the Northern Silk Road with the Southern Silk Road. The ancient road network of the Qinling Mountains, with the majestic bearing of "girdling the eight wilds and controlling the six directions," constructed a transportation network running through the heart of China, forming a civilizational pattern of "reaching the great desert to the north, the rivers and seas to the south, the Western Regions to the west, and the Central Plains to the east."

During the Han and Tang periods, this corridor entered its heyday. The three foreign religions—Zoroastrianism, Manichaeism, and Nestorianism—were all introduced to China by Persians. After the fall of the Sassanian Empire, the last Persian monarch took his family to Chang'an for refuge. The Sogdians and Persians on the Silk Road played an important role in communicating scientific and technological civilization between China and the West. Cultural elements from Persia, Central Asia, and India poured into Guanzhong and, after being tempered in the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain, continued to spread eastward. "Heaven and earth in warp and weft are all the cyclical return of the two views; square and circle in tacit accord are all the self-consistency of the three ways." The two-way flow between mountains and seas made the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain a veritable "crossroads."

06 Cyclical Return and Self-Consistency

The civilizational course of the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain can be condensed into six keywords: cultural origin, cultural corridor, cultural convergence, cultural sedimentation, cultural diffusion, and cultural contraction. The six are not arranged linearly but circulate back and forth amid the alternation of warm and cold. During warm periods, culture converges, settles, and diffuses; during cold periods, culture contracts, guards itself, and is tempered. Each cycle completes a "self-consistency" at a higher level, and civilization finds balance anew amid climatic shifts and geographical changes.

The transmission of the Great Corridor around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau operates simultaneously in three modes. Population carriage brings civilizational factors directly into Guanzhong along with migrating peoples; the Sumerian worship of the stellar triad, transmitted from Mesopotamia into Guanzhong via the Qiang North Road and Qiang Central Road, is a typical embodiment of population carriage. Trade relay brings Persian silver coins, Hetian jade, and Mediterranean glass beads into the Guanzhong Plain through multi-level transshipment. Spiritual imitation manifests as the cross-civilizational diffusion of symbols. The three modes of transmission converge and superimpose in the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain, enabling this land to simultaneously serve the threefold functions of corridor, converter, and crucible.

The north-south oscillation of the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors is an early embodiment of this cycle. During warm periods, the ancestors ascended to the second terrace to develop agriculture; during the period of Emperor Ku, the range of activity extended toward the third terrace—precisely a spatial shift driven by a cold period. Around 5,400 years ago, a sea transgression occurred, with sea level rising to about 20 meters above the present; the Lingjiatan culture was forced to migrate toward the second terrace, bringing jade traditions and the octagonal-star cosmology into the Loess Plateau. Around 4,200 years ago, an even more severe sea transgression occurred, with sea level rising to about 66 meters above the present; the Liangzhu culture collapsed completely, and the Longshan and Shijiahe cultures also suffered severe damage. In these two sea transgressions, the Loess Plateau where the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain is located became a "haven" for migrants from the third terrace. They poured into the second terrace with advanced production techniques, exquisite jade, and systematic cosmology, merging with local culture in the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain. These cultural elements from the east accelerated the leap of Loess Plateau civilization toward early statehood. The Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain thereby completed the "absorption" and "integration" of the civilizational achievements of the third terrace—a typical embodiment of "self-consistency."

The law of "cold suppresses, warmth uplifts" runs through Chinese history. In the late Western Zhou, cooling brought invasion by the Quanrong; from the Spring and Autumn period to the Western Han, warming brought Qin-Han unification; from the Eastern Han to the Northern and Southern Dynasties, cooling brought the Five Barbarians' incursion; the Tang and Song warmed, and prosperity reappeared. The Discourses of the States · Discourses of Zhou records the words of Bo Yangfu: "Formerly, when the Yi and Luo rivers dried up, the Xia perished; when the Yellow River dried up, the Shang perished." Climate change led to the drying up of rivers, which in turn triggered dynastic collapse—a plain climate-based view of history. From Haojing of the Western Zhou to Xianyang of the Qin capital, from Chang'an of the Han and Tang to the eastward shift of the political center, every rise of the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain was accompanied by a warm period, and every decline echoed a cold period. During warm periods culture diffused; during cold periods culture contracted; in contraction strength was gathered, in diffusion civilization was spread—expanding and guarding, circulating back and forth. This is precisely the fundamental reason the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain has passed through thousands of years without ever being interrupted.

"Cyclical return is absolute, self-consistency is momentary, and resilience is relative." Understanding climate change, complying with the constancy of heaven and earth, and completing self-consistency within cyclical return—this is the survival wisdom of the Loess Plateau over five thousand years. Warm, then open; cold, then close. Warm, then disperse; cold, then gather. When the sea rose and lowlands were submerged, the ancestors retreated to the highlands and built cities for self-defense; when the climate warmed and the sea retreated and land emerged, the ancestors walked out of Guanzhong and expanded their territory. The Great Ring Road completed its final closure here; the civilizational factors introduced, after transformation through the nine-grid, settled into an inseparable part of Chinese civilization.

结语

Conclusion

The Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain is the solid backbone of Chinese civilization.

"Heaven and earth, square and circle; universe and human as root—this can encompass heaven and earth. Diachronic climate, synchronic geography—this can achieve cyclical self-consistency. The six directions and nine-grid, the matrix and grid—this can achieve heaven and earth in warp and weft. Modeling heaven to take the circle, modeling earth to choose the square—this can achieve square and circle in tacit accord." Geographically, it is the core transformation node at the eastern end of the Great Corridor around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, a strategic corridor connecting the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau with the Pacific Rim. Historically, it carries the never-interrupted civilizational sequence from the Denisovans to the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors, from the Three Dynasties and Nine Reigns to the Zhou, Qin, Han, and Tang. Culturally, it is the birthplace of the threefold Chinese genes—the giant salamander becoming the dragon, the Western Zhou origin, and the Qin unification—and the witness to the complete cycle of cultural origin, cultural corridor, cultural convergence, cultural sedimentation, cultural diffusion, and cultural contraction. It is at once a "civilizational crucible," tempering and fusing the cultural elements pouring in from all directions; a "civilizational sieve," screening and transforming foreign factors through the spatial framework of the nine-grid; and a "civilizational origin," from which every cyclical return of civilization departs or to which it returns, with the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain as its axis. The Western Zhou established its principles; the Qin implemented its institutions; thereafter two thousand years of Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing continued forward within its framework.

With 122 characters of inscription, the He Zun froze the political ideal of "dwelling in this China" on a bronze vessel. With 372 characters of inscription, the Lai Pan cast into the annals the twelve generations of Western Zhou kings and the Shan family's eight hundred years of assistance. Three thousand years ago, when the Zhou people established on this land the ideals of "governing from the center" and "matching heaven with virtue," the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain's status as the core of Chinese civilization had already been inscribed on artifacts, becoming permanent testimony. From Fuxi drawing the trigrams to the Zhou instituting rites and music, from Qin unifying the world to the prosperity of Han and Tang, from Laozi traveling west to the Silk Road, the Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain witnessed the complete process of a civilization from origin to prosperity, from convergence to diffusion, from contraction to rebirth. This land is itself a living "cyclical return," and the history book written in loess has not yet been closed.
