引言

Introduction

The southward passage of the character long (陇, meaning “mound” or “ridge”) has never been an isolated event. It is the written imprint of a systematic southward migration—a civilizational movement spanning thousands of years, covering thousands of kilometers, and threading together nature and humanity.

When the cry of the giant salamander in the depths of the Long Mountains was heard by the ancestors and carved into writing, when the Longzhou carp swam leisurely in the shallows of Jiahu in Henan, when a Shang dynasty hunter at Anyang captured an Asian elephant—these living presences all point to one fact: thousands of years ago, the Yellow River basin was far warmer and more humid than today. The Central Plains then were shaded by bamboo groves, roamed by elephant herds, with giant salamanders crying in mountain streams and Longzhou carp swimming in rivers and lakes—a scene of subtropical countenance.

Then the climate turned cold. Bamboo migrated south; plum blossoms migrated south; the Longzhou carp migrated south; the giant salamander migrated south; the Asian elephant migrated south; the Malay turtle migrated south. The entire ecological belt shifted southward as a whole, and the people walking upon that belt carried their writing, their surnames, and their memories along the same path, all the way south.

The southward migration of the place name “Long” is the most faithful and enduring record of this systematic southward movement. From the totemic worship of the giant salamander in the depths of the Long Mountains to the seven-hundred-year continuity of the “Jing Long Golden Hall Kingdom” on the border of Longchuan, a single Chinese character, over thousands of years, completed a civilizational migration and ecological displacement spanning more than two thousand kilometers. To understand the southward passage of long is to understand how climate drives ecology, how ecology drives human migration, and how migrating peoples carry writing and surnames along the same path, completing a systematic displacement covering every dimension of nature and humanity. This displacement was not a one-time event but occurred repeatedly amid alternations of cold and warmth, each time superimposed upon the traces of the previous, ultimately forming the cultural-geographic configuration we see today from the Long Mountains to Longchuan.

The cultural-geographic centrality of the character “Long” derives precisely from its starting point as the name of a single mountain, gradually evolving into the designation of an entire region. With the Long Mountains as the origin, the ancients established the spatial-cognitive system of “Longdong,” “Longxi,” and “Longnan,” from which broader cultural concepts such as “Guan-Long” and “Longyou” were derived. The character “Long” is therefore not merely a written symbol but the coordinate origin of an entire spatial order. To understand the southward migration of long is to understand the southward movement of this spatial order.

01 The Origin of the Long Mountains: From “A Giant Salamander on the Mountain” to “A Dragon on the Mountain”

The Long Mountains, the southern section of the Liupan Mountains, form the dividing line between the Guanzhong Plain and the Longxi Plateau. Tall and long, connected to the desert in the north and flanked by the Qian and Wei rivers in the south, they have been a natural barrier between the Central Plains and the western frontier since antiquity. Using the Long Mountains as a coordinate, the ancients called the area east of the mountains “Longdong,” west “Longxi,” and south “Longnan,” collectively known as the “Three Longs,” which later became the abbreviation for Gansu. This naming system itself suggests the centrality of the Long Mountains as a geographic reference point: the entire spatial cognition of Longdong, Longxi, and Longnan unfolds with the Long Mountains as its origin. Here the character “Long” is not merely the name of a mountain but the coordinate origin of an entire spatial order.

The Long Mountains are not only a geographic coordinate but a cultural one. The Eight-Hundred-Li Qin Plain runs from Baoji in the west to Tongguan in the east, and the Long Mountains are precisely its western gate. The term “Guan-Long” remains the designation for this region today. The Wei, Ruo, and Qian rivers originate in or flow beneath the Long Mountains, emptying into the Yellow River system. This position made the Long Mountains the gateway between the Central Plains and the western frontier, and carried the character “Long” from a mountain name into a broader cultural space: the Zhou rose in Longdong, the Qin flourished in Longyou, and both entered and ruled Guanzhong.

The Shuowen Jiezi states: “Long: the great slope of Tianshui. From the radical fu (mound), with long (dragon) as the phonetic.” Fu means mountainous terrain; long is the phonetic component; together they mean “a dragon on mountain terrain.” But where did the “dragon” come from? This must begin with a special creature of the Long Mountains.

The Long Mountain region was rich in giant salamanders in ancient times, commonly known as “baby fish.” The giant salamander can reach over 1.5 meters in length, the largest extant amphibian in the world, living in clear mountain streams and rock caves. It often emits a low call echoing through deep river valleys, strikingly resembling the cry of an infant—to the ancestors, as if the mountain were “giving birth” to a child. In matrilineal clan society, where fertility was of paramount importance, the ancestors developed a totemic worship of the giant salamander. The “dragon” in their eyes was originally the “giant salamander.”

This inference is strongly corroborated by archaeological discoveries at the Dadiwan site in Qin'an, Gansu, and the Xiping site in Gangu County. The Dadiwan site, dating to approximately 8,200–4,800 years ago, covers about 1.1 million square meters and has yielded tens of thousands of pottery, stone, and bone objects; it is one of the oldest and longest-continuing Neolithic sites in northwestern China. The human-head-shaped painted pottery bottle unearthed there fuses a female head with a pottery vessel—a masterpiece of Chinese prehistoric sculpture, widely regarded by academia as one of the early prototypes of the Nüwa figure. The salamander-pattern painted pottery bottle from the Xiping site in Gangu bears a human-faced, salamander-bodied design, direct material evidence of the ancestors’ fusion of giant-salamander totemic worship with the worship of Nüwa. Two painted pottery bottles—one sculpted with a human head, one painted with a salamander pattern—point together to the same cultural fact: in the Long Mountain region 5,000–8,000 years ago, the ancestors created the ancestral image of “human head, salamander body,” which later evolved into the “human head, snake body” image of Fuxi and Nüwa, and the salamander totem evolved into the dragon totem. “In Heaven it is image, on Earth it is form, in Human it is image-form.”

The character “Long” is precisely the crystallization of this worship: it is at once a place name, a clan name, and the label of a totem—three sharing one origin, each the surface of the other. On the material level, the giant salamander truly existed in the mountain streams; on the symbolic level, it was elevated by the ancestors into the totemic prototype of the “dragon”; on the written level, this totem was crystallized into the character “Long,” which both denotes mountainous terrain and carries the sound and meaning of “dragon.” Material object, symbol, and writing—a triple transformation superimposed upon the same mountain.

The giant salamander is extremely sensitive to climate, able to survive only in warm, humid waters. Modern ecological research shows that the most critical factor affecting its distribution is the average temperature of the coldest quarter. Since the mid-Holocene, as the climate cooled, the suitable habitat of the giant salamander shifted substantially southward from the Yellow River basin. From the Yellow River basin to south of the Yangtze basin, its distribution boundary shifted south by over a thousand kilometers. The giant salamander migrated south; the character “Long” migrated south with the people. When the giant salamander disappeared from the Central Plains, the character “Long,” modeled upon it, was carried south by people and found a new habitat in the south. The species migrated south, yet the cultural symbol it had generated did not disappear—it was carried southward. This is the most essential meaning of “the southward passage of long.”

02 The Southward Migration of “Long”: Three Corridors and Their Nodes

Starting from the Long Mountains, the place name “Long” extended southward along three main corridors. The northward movement of Austroasiatic-speaking peoples occurred about 10,000 years ago; the southward movement of Long Mountain culture occurred over 4,000 years ago—a difference of more than six thousand years, yet the routes were broadly similar. This shows that the constraint of climate and geography upon human behavior is long-term and stable. These three corridors were not chosen at random but were natural routes determined jointly by Earth's tectonic lines, basin orientations, and climatic gradients. Within the framework of the Great Corridor around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, these three corridors respectively constitute secondary branches extending southward from the Great Corridor in its East Asian section: the Southwest Corridor is a northward branch of the Southern Qiang Route; the Pearl River–Xiang River Corridor connects the Yangtze and Pearl River systems; the Coastal Corridor is part of the southern section of the Great Pacific Coastal Corridor.

The Southwest Corridor runs south along the Lancang, Nu, and Dulong rivers—what later ages called the “Shu-Shendu Route.” It runs south from the southeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, crosses the Hengduan Mountains, and enters the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. Along the way it left “Long” imprints such as Bazhong Longshan, Xingyi Longshan, and Xishuangbanna Longchuan. Human migration along this corridor began as early as the late Neolithic; during the Qin-Han period it became a traffic artery connecting southwestern China with Southeast and South Asia. Along this corridor, each appearance of “Long” means that Long Mountain culture had crossed a new geographic boundary and broken through another ecological barrier. Bazhong Longshan, located on the northeastern edge of the Sichuan Basin, is the first important node of the “Long” place name after crossing the Qinling Mountains. Bazhong lies at the southern foot of the Micang Mountains, a strategic passage from the Central Plains into Sichuan since antiquity; the appearance of “Long” here marks Long Mountain culture's formal entry into the Yangtze basin. Xingyi Longshan, in the southwestern corner of Guizhou on the Nanpan River in the upper Pearl River, lies in the transitional zone from the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau to the Guangxi hills—an important post on the Southwest Corridor. The appearance of “Long” here means Long Mountain culture had penetrated deep into the southwestern hinterland. Xishuangbanna Longchuan, anciently called “Mengwan,” meaning “the place where the sun shines,” is the terminus of this southward route. Here the character “Long” completed its final settling from mountain name to place name, but the story did not end: it continued to sediment and transform here, ultimately sublimating into the name of a kingdom lasting over seven hundred years. Between “Long” and “Mengwan,” a single Chinese character completed a cultural journey spanning more than two thousand kilometers.

The Pearl River–Xiang River Corridor runs from Hunan through the Xiang River system into the Pearl River system—the most convenient water-land route from the Central Plains to Lingnan. It is formed by the Xiang and Yuan rivers—tributaries of the Yangtze—and their upstream waterways, constituting the water system network connecting the Yangtze and Pearl River basins. The Xiang is the core main stream; the Yuan is an important corridor toward western Hunan; together they form a natural north-south passage. Along the way it left Loudi Longshan, Baise Longshan, the Chongzuo “Long” place-name cluster, and Longzhou. The Xiang River is navigable below Hengyang and connects with the Pearl River system via the Lingqu Canal—one of the earliest artificial waterways linking the Yangtze and Pearl rivers, enabling this corridor to carry large-scale population and material transport as early as the Qin-Han period. Loudi Longshan lies in the Lianshui basin, a tributary of the Xiang in central Hunan. Loudi is an important gateway from central Hunan to Lingnan; the appearance of “Long” here marks Long Mountain culture advancing toward the Pearl River basin. Baise Longshan lies in the upper You River in western Guangxi. Baise sits on the transitional slope from the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau to the Guangxi Basin, the first stop after the Pearl River–Xiang River Corridor enters Guangxi. The appearance of “Long” here means Long Mountain culture had crossed the Nanling and moved from the Central Plains cultural zone into the Lingnan cultural zone. The Chongzuo “Long” place-name cluster lies in the Zuo River basin of southwestern Guangxi—the densest sedimentation zone of the southward “Long” migration. In Longzhou County alone there are numerous “Long” place names: Longjun Village, Longnei Hamlet, Longli Hamlet, Longrui Hamlet, and many more. “Longgan Hamlet” points directly in meaning to “Long Mountain” and “Shaanxi-Gansu”; a place name that migrated south to this point has not even changed its literal meaning. Longzhou is the typical case of “Long” being homophonically changed to “dragon” (long); in Zhuang areas, “Long” is often changed to “dragon,” since people commonly call mountain ranges “dragon veins” and groundwater “dragon pools.”

The coastal corridor winds south along the southeast coastline. Distributed along the coastline, it complements the overland corridors and constitutes the third route of the southward “Long” migration. Along the coastal regions of Fujian, Guangdong, and Guangxi it left homophonic place names such as Longyan, Longhai, Longwen, Longgang, Longmen, Longchuan, Longnan, Longhu, Longhua, and Longjiang.

From Bazhong Longshan to Chongzuo Longshan, from the Yangtze basin to the Pearl River basin, the southward migration path of “Long” is clearly legible, with place names as evidence at every step. These place names are not isolated points but linked into a complete chain, pointing in the same direction: south.

03 The Longzhou Carp and the Malay Turtle: Witnesses to a Convergent Endpoint

Among all biological evidence, the relationship between the Longzhou carp and the character “Long” is the most direct. The Longzhou carp is a fish endemic to China, now distributed only in the area from Longzhou to Shangsi in the upper Xijiang River of Guangxi, where the winter minimum temperature remains above 0°C—a typical subtropical climate. But the Jiahu site in Wuyang County, Henan, dating to about 8,200 years ago, yielded large quantities of Longzhou carp pharyngeal teeth. Paleontological identification indicates that the Longzhou carp once grew widely in the area of the Jiahu site, where the climate was warmer than today's Yangtze basin. Later the Longzhou carp's distribution contracted from the Huai River basin to the Pearl River basin, disappearing from the Central Plains as the climate cooled—a southward shift of over a thousand kilometers. The abundant presence of Longzhou carp pharyngeal teeth at Jiahu is itself an ancient climatic map, marking the subtropical boundary of the Yellow River basin at that time.

And the name “Longzhou” is the direct product of “Long” homophonically becoming “dragon.” Longzhou is one of the endpoints of the southward migration of “Long.” The discovery of Longzhou carp pharyngeal teeth at Jiahu both proves the cooling of the climate and foreshadows that “Long” would ultimately reach Longzhou. The Longzhou carp retreated to Longzhou; the character “Long” also arrived at Longzhou. The southward migration of a fish and the southward migration of a written character achieved a perfect coincidence at the same geographic coordinate. The scientific name of the Longzhou carp contains the character “dragon”; its last habitat is called “Longzhou”; and the endpoint of “Long”'s southward migration is also “Longzhou.” Three “dragons” point to the same geographic coordinate. This is not coincidence but the ultimate corroboration of ecology and culture migrating south in synchrony under the same climatic driver. One fish, one character, one city—three sharing the common label “dragon,” spanning thousands of years in time, overlapping at the same endpoint in space.

The southward migration of reptiles is typified by the Malay turtle. The Yinxu site at Anyang yielded large quantities of turtle shells used for divination, a considerable portion identified as Malay turtle. The Malay turtle is a typical tropical species, now distributed only in Myanmar and the tropical regions of Southeast Asia. The presence of Malay turtle shells at Yinxu indicates that the climate of the Central Plains in the late Shang was as warm and humid as today's Southeast Asia. The Malay turtle retreated from the Yellow River basin to south of Myanmar—a southward shift of over two thousand kilometers. Dragon and turtle are often paired in traditional culture; the “dragon-turtle” is a symbol of numinous creatures. The southward migration of the Malay turtle is highly correlated with the southward migration of “Long” in both time and space; their retreat directions are entirely consistent with the direction of “Long”'s southward migration. The Longzhou carp is a fish, the Malay turtle a turtle; their relationship to “Long” is one explicit and one implicit, one direct and one metaphorical—yet they converge upon the same southward migration.

04 The Overall Southward Shift of the Ecological Belt

The southward migration of the Longzhou carp and the Malay turtle is not isolated. The southward migration of terrestrial mammals and plants provides a broader ecological background.

Around 4,200 years ago, the global climate underwent a violent mutation. Greenland ice-core records show a severe cooling event lasting decades around 2200 BCE. Stalagmite oxygen isotope records from both northern and southern China synchronously indicate this drought lasting nearly 200 years. This global climatic event caused four great civilizations to shift simultaneously; the Long Mountain culture of the Loess Plateau also migrated south. The southward migration of “Long” is not an isolated cultural event but the imprint left by this global climatic mutation at the level of writing.

The southward migration of terrestrial mammals is equally clear. The Asian elephant retreated from Anyang to Xishuangbanna—a southward shift of over two thousand kilometers. Elephant bones unearthed at Yinxu and the oracle bone record of “capturing elephants” prove that wild elephant herds still existed in the Central Plains during the Shang. In 2021, a herd of Asian elephants from Xishuangbanna began a long northward journey, crossing Pu'er, Yuxi, and Honghe, all the way north to near Kunming, attracting global attention. This event corroborates the rule of “northward in warm periods”: warming stimulated their instinctive impulse to return to the Yellow River basin. The giant panda retreated from the Yellow River basin to the upper Yangtze; giant panda bones have been found in archaeological sites in Shaanxi and Henan. The tiger's range retreated from the North China Plain to the southwestern mountains. The giant panda migrated south with the bamboo forests, the tiger with its prey, the Asian elephant with the tropical forests. When the entire food chain is migrating south, humans naturally migrate south as well. These species differ in their sensitivity to climatic change, but their retreat directions are consistent: south, toward lower latitudes and lower altitudes.

The southward migration of plants laid the foundation for the displacement of the entire ecological belt. Bamboo retreated from the Yellow River basin to south of the Yangtze. Bamboo rat remains unearthed at Yinxu prove that bamboo groves once existed at Anyang during the Shang; today the bamboo rat is distributed only south of the Yangtze basin. Plum blossoms moved from Shandong to Jiangnan. In his Preliminary Study of Climatic Change in China over the Last Five Thousand Years, Zhu Kezhen used precisely the distributional changes of bamboo and plum as core evidence to establish the basic framework of China's climatic change over the last five thousand years. He cited pre-Qin texts such as the Book of Songs and the Zuo Commentary regarding the growth of plum and bamboo in the Central Plains, and by comparison with phenological records after the Song, demonstrated that the climate of the Yellow River basin then was far warmer than today. Plum and bamboo are both indicator species of subtropical plant communities; they once flourished on the Central Plains alongside the panda. Zhu Kezhen's conclusion belongs not only to meteorology but to civilizational history, for every boundary shift in plant distribution means an overall change in the conditions of human survival.

Reptiles, mammals, plants, fish—the southward migration paths of multiple taxa overlap on the same spatial trajectory, consistent in direction and coincident in route. This is the ecological background of “Long”'s southward migration. The overall southward shift of the ecological belt was not scattered but systematic and synchronous: the entire biological community was moving south, and the human group was merely one part of it.

05 The Synchronous Southward Migration of Cultural Symbols

When the entire ecological belt shifted south, the people walking upon that belt carried a complete cultural system with them as they migrated south.

This southward migration left multiple imprints. In surnames, the surname “Long” migrated south with the people; in place names, river names, mountain names, and city names shifted south synchronously; in state names, a single Chinese character ultimately sublimated into the name of a kingdom lasting over seven centuries.

The surname “Long” derives from the Ying and Ji surnames and from place names, and its bearers are mostly ancient Western Qiang people. Today the Long surname is distributed in Beijing, Jiangxi, Hunan, and Guizhou. The Southwest Yi Annals records that the Long clan migrated to Langdai and “took the mountain Long as their surname.” From Long Mountain in Gansu to Langdai in Yunnan, the migration of a surname and the southward migration of a place name traveled the same road.

River names shifted south synchronously. After the “southward crossing of the gentry” in the Western Jin, Central Plains elites renamed the Nan'an River as the Jin River. The southward migration of the Hakka left river names such as the Mei, Cheng, and Han rivers. Mountain names shifted south synchronously: Luoni Mountain in Leye, Huize, Yunnan, is the source coordinate of the Yi “Six Ancestors' Branching.” Place names shifted south synchronously: Shunde Prefecture in Hebei during the Yuan, Shunde County in Guangdong during the Ming; the state of Zhongshan in Hebei during the Warring States, Zhongshan City in Guangdong in modern times. Each coincidence of a southern place name with a northern one marks a southward movement of people and a migration of culture.

The southward migration of the ancient Qiang is the demographic foundation of this southward migration of cultural symbols. According to the Book of Later Han, Account of the Western Qiang, during the reign of Duke Xian of Qin the Qiang began large-scale southward migration. Academia widely holds that the ancestors of ethnic minorities in the southwest—the Yi, Tibetan, Naxi—include ancient Qiang components that migrated south from the Gansu-Qinghai region. The ancient Qiang had been broadly active in the northwest since the Bronze Age; their language, writing, and surnames sedimented along the way as they migrated south. The “Long” place names are the most faithful written record of this long migration.

After the Zhou conquered the Shang, the political system of the Central Plains moved from a league of square states toward enfeoffment and commandery-county systems. But the peoples who migrated south to the southwestern frontier carried an earlier form of the square-state system to the south and preserved it in the new geographic environment. In 1180 CE, the Dai chief Bazhen established the “Jing Long Golden Hall Kingdom.” “Jing” is the Dai word for “city wall”; “Long” is the homophone of “dragon”; together they mean “Dragon City.” The kingdom lasted 770 years, ending only in 1950. The three-tier structure of “Dai Bo—Meng—Jing” in Xishuangbanna corresponds item by item, in name and function, to the “state—country—city” system of the Central Plains during the Three Dynasties. From Long Mountain to Longchuan, from “Long” to “Jing Long,” a single Chinese character not only survived in the south but became the foundational symbol for establishing a state—a continuation of the Three Dynasties square-state system in the southwest, and the most vital unfolding of “the southward passage of long.”

In the Zuo River basin where Chongzuo and Longzhou lie, another form of southward-migration memory survives: the Huashan rock paintings (in Guangxi). Located in the Ming River basin, a tributary of the Zuo River in Guangxi, the Huashan rock paintings extend over 260 kilometers, painted from the Warring States to the Eastern Han, about 2,500 to 1,800 years ago. The paintings feature frog-shaped human figures, bronze drums, sun patterns, and sacrificial scenes—cultural remains of the ancient Luoyue people. In Xuanhui, the Huashan rock paintings are explicitly described as “a salute to the Yellow River and the Yangtze.” Xuanhui points out that Guangxi culture was formed by the convergence of the ancient South Asian civilization characterized by bronze drums and the ancient Qiang and ancient Central Plains civilizations characterized by rock paintings; the Huashan rock paintings are precisely the pictorial witness of this convergence. This means that the frog-shaped dancers, bronze drum patterns, and sun totems on the rock faces were not created from nothing; they are the result of southward-migrating peoples re-expressing their cultural memory of the Yellow River and Yangtze basins on new land. The Huashan rock paintings and the dense sedimentation of “Long” place names in the Zuo River basin form a spatial echo: one preserves memory in images, the other fixes the path in writing. Together they constitute the complete picture of “Long”'s southward migration—writing fixed in place names, images sedimented on rock faces—both traces left by the same southward migration at different levels.

And around the Long Mountains, the Dangchang Qiang (a branch of the ancient Qiang) and the Baima people remain in place to this day, continuing the cultural genes of the source of “Long.” The Dangchang Qiang are centered on present-day Dangchang County in Longnan, Gansu, distributed in the Bailong River basin. The Book of Wei, Account of the Dangchang Qiang records: “The Dangchang Qiang are descendants of the Sanmiao... their customs are all indigenous, dwelling in houses woven with yak tail and sheep wool.” Although long situated on the frontier of Central Plains dynasties, the Dangchang Qiang always maintained an “indigenous” settled way of life. The place name Dangchang shares the same origin as the “Long” system: “Dang” means cave or stone chamber; the Bailong (White Dragon) River flows through it; and “dragon” is precisely the homophone of “Long.” The Baima people are distributed in Wen County, Gansu; Pingwu and Jiuzhaigou, Sichuan; they preserve a unique language, dress, and belief system to this day. Their most distinctive cultural symbol is the “Chige Zhou,” a masked exorcist dance whose masks bear fish and dragon patterns, with striking visual affinities to the salamander-pattern painted pottery bottle unearthed at Dadiwan. Academia widely holds that the Baima are descendants of the ancient Di people. They are the stayers in the southward tide, the other half of the picture of “the southward passage of long.” Without the contrast of the stayers, the extent of the southward migration could not be measured. The stayers held the source; the migrants expanded the boundary; together they constitute the complete spatial distribution of Long culture.

06 Cyclical Return and Self-Consistency: The Spatial Philosophy of the Southward Passage of “Long”

The southward migration of “Long” is not an isolated drift of writing but part of the civilizational transmission along the Great Corridor around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. In the spatial-philosophical framework of Xuanhui, the southward passage of “Long” presents itself as a complete process of cyclical return and self-consistency: climate drives ecological displacement, ecology drives human migration, and humans carry writing, surnames, and memory south along the same path.

In the spatial dimension, the southward migration route of “Long” coincides precisely with the three secondary corridors of the Great Corridor. The Southwest Corridor connects to the Southern Qiang Route; the Pearl River–Xiang River Corridor connects the Yangtze and Pearl River systems; the Coastal Corridor connects to the Great Pacific Coastal Corridor. The southward migration of “Long” is not an isolated journey of writing but the written corroboration of the Great Corridor's southward extension in its East Asian section. Along the Great Corridor there is material transmission, technological transmission, institutional transmission, and also written transmission; “Long” is precisely a living sample of written transmission. Each southward migration is a sowing of writing; each sowing leaves a new “Long” imprint in the south. From Long Mountain to Longchuan, these imprints linked together form a complete line of written transmission.

In the temporal dimension, this southward migration is not a one-time event but repeated superimposition amid alternations of cold and warmth. Each cold period drives a batch of population, a batch of writing, a batch of place names south along the same route; each warm period sees some species attempt to return north, but “Long” has already taken root in the south, forming layer upon layer of southern “Long” place names. This “superimposition” is precisely what Xuanhui calls “self-consistency”: each southward migration adds a new layer upon the traces of the previous, ultimately forming the complete chain of place names from Long Mountain to Longchuan.

In chronological sequence, the starting point of “Long”'s southward migration lies in the Dadiwan culture period, about 8,000 years ago; its endpoint lies in the establishment of the “Jing Long Golden Hall Kingdom” in 1180 CE—a span of nearly ten thousand years. Across this near-ten-thousand-year span, “Long” transformed from the name of a single mountain into the common label of dozens of place names, into the carrier symbol of a surname, and finally into the name of a kingdom lasting over seven hundred years. It is not only the southward migration of writing but the synchronous displacement of an entire ecological belt and cultural belt.

The southward migration of “Long” occupies a unique position in the framework of the Great Corridor around the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It shares the same spatial logic with the Sanxingdui civilizational transmission and the Qijia culture's westward advance: climate-driven civilizational transmission unfolds along the secondary corridors of the Great Corridor, and each transmission leaves identifiable material or symbolic imprints along the way. The “Long” place names are among the most recognizable of these imprints: they shift south as populations migrate south, spread as cold periods arrive, and await northward reversal as warm periods return. The southward passage of “Long” is therefore not only an individual case of written migration but the concrete embodiment of the overall movement laws of the writing system within the Great Corridor's civilizational transmission.

Cold periods southward, warm periods northward. The “cyclical return” of “Long”'s southward migration awaits reversal in the next warm period. The 2021 northward migration of the Xishuangbanna elephant herd is precisely the instinctive impulse of species attempting to return to former habitat as a warm period arrives. The complete cycle of “Long”'s southward migration will ultimately complete its reverse movement in the next warm period.

结语

Conclusion

The southward passage of “Long” is a civilizational epic of systematic southward migration.

From Long Mountain to Longchuan, the “Long” place names traveled south through Bazhong, Xingyi, Loudi, and Baise, reaching Chongzuo and Longzhou. Three corridors, dozens of nodes, over two thousand kilometers—a complete chain of place-name migration southward. Plants moved south, fish moved south, amphibians moved south, reptiles moved south, mammals moved south, population moved south, writing moved south, surnames moved south, state names moved south, images moved south—tenfold southward migration overlapping and interweaving on the same path, consistent in direction, synchronous in rhythm, coincident in route.

Most closely linked to “Long” are the giant salamander and the Longzhou carp. The giant salamander is the etymological source of “Long”: “a dragon on the mountain” was originally “a giant salamander on the mountain.” The giant salamander migrated south; “Long” migrated south as well. The Longzhou carp retreated to Longzhou; “Long” also arrived at Longzhou. A name and an endpoint precisely coincide—the most astonishing corroboration of this southward migration. The giant salamander and the Longzhou carp: one the etymological source of “Long,” one the species witness at its endpoint—beginning and end together locking the temporal-spatial span of this southward migration.

Accompanying “Long” was a complete cultural system. The “Long” surname migrated south; river names migrated south; mountain names migrated south; place names migrated south—ultimately condensing into the seven-hundred-year state name of the “Jing Long Golden Hall Kingdom.” The Huashan rock paintings, in the form of images, preserved in the Zuo River basin the civilizational memory of the Yellow River and the Yangtze. Writing and image, one east one west, one south one north, together constitute the complete expression of this southward migration in Lingnan. And at the source, the Dangchang Qiang and the Baima people remain in place, guarding the ancient genes of Long culture. The migrants sowed writing; the stayers guarded the source; together they constitute the complete picture of this cultural migration. This is precisely the vivid embodiment of “cyclical return” and “self-consistency” in the spatial philosophy of Xuanhui: southward migration is the movement of “cyclical return,” remaining in place is the stability of “self-consistency,” and the two mutually define and fulfill each other within the same temporal-spatial framework.

Cold periods southward, warm periods northward. The 2021 northward migration of the Xishuangbanna elephant herd is precisely the instinctive impulse of species attempting to return to former habitat as a warm period arrives. The southward migration of “Long” likewise awaits the reversal of a warm period. The north has never lost the memory of “Long”; the south has also left the imprint of “Long.” Southward and northward, migration and staying, the flow of writing and the settling of place names—together they constitute the complete cycle of Long's migration.

From Long Mountain to Longchuan, from “a dragon on mountain terrain” to “a flatland embraced by mountains,” the single character “Long” tells not the isolated journey of one Chinese character but the grand epic of an entire ecological belt and an entire cultural belt shifting south in synchrony. Between advance and retreat, there is always a road to take, land to till, a city to hold, a name to transmit, a surname to continue, a state to establish—moving toward the good, acting toward benevolence.
